Ted and Erin have been renting for about eight years, but it’s not because they wanted to wait to buy. They’ve seen over 100 homes and put in offers on countless properties—either to be outbid on, bought out from under them, or caught up in another issue along the way—all while actually paying a mortgage on a house they don’t know what to do with. So this week on Property Brothers: Under Pressure, Drew and Jonathan are helping Ted and Erin move forward and create a fresh start.

The house Ted and Erin have been paying a mortgage on has actually been in Ted’s family for more than 30 years—but now, is pretty much just an empty, outdated property with the lights kept on. They haven’t moved in because Erin is concerned that she’ll feel like a guest in his house. Ted raised his children there with his ex-wife, and moved out when they divorced, but the home still houses those memories. He and Erin want to make new memories without over-complicated feelings, but they don’t know how. The home has beautiful bones, hillside views, and it’s a dream property for many. But the couple is at a crossroads with what to do. Do they renovate it and move in? Do they sell it and find somewhere new?

So, the Bros helped Ted and Erin weigh their options, and showed them a couple houses within their $1.7M budget that they think the couple would like. They’d be sacrificing the hillside views, but these properties require little to no renovations, and they’d allow Ted and Erin an immediate fresh start together. After all was said and done, Ted and Erin decided to renovate the home they inherited, and turn it into a place to call their own. So then began the process of renovating it top-to-bottom—between faulty electricity, an unkempt interior that hasn’t been touched in decades, illegal work from years past, plumbing issues, and more—all for under $250k.

Before & Afters
Brightening Up the Living Space

Ted and Erin loved the view from the living room, but Erin didn’t love the fireplace facade. She felt it was outdated and made the room feel dark—but still loved the idea of having a fireplace. Plastering over the existing brick saved them several thousand dollars, which really helped in the long run with how much they had to fix in plumbing and electricity.

They repainted the beams in a neutral grey, and installed cabinetry along the media wall for a hidden storage solution. Paired with updated flooring, the living room feels like a whole new space.

A Fully Gutted Kitchen

The kitchen almost doesn’t look recognizable! Due to all the faulty wiring and the worn, broken fixtures, Drew and Jonathan decided the best solution (and the one that the couple would appreciate most) is to start from scratch with a new cooking space that fits their style, works functionally, and is built for modern-day use.

Opening Up the Dining Space

By turning the kitchen peninsula into a large-scale island and converting the old sliding glass door to a floor-to-ceiling window, the Bros were able to make Ted and Erin’s dining space feel way more open and welcoming. Now, Erin is able to live out her dream of hosting family holiday dinners and the people they love in a space that feels their own.

An Airy Primary

The primary bedroom needed a serious facelift—and using the palette that Ted and Erin decided on, the room got just that. Vertical plank walls make the room feel larger, while better lighting and cozy furniture keep the space looking comfortable and calm.

Opening Up the Bathroom

What was once a dingy, dysfunctional bathroom is now an oasis for Ted and Erin. New lighting, finer finishes, and a completely fresh shower setup made the biggest difference. Finally, the space feels like the home spa they were hoping for.

Drew and Linda are parents to two little toddlers, Parker and Piper. So having the right organization tools is essential for them to manage their busy family life—especially in the kitchen. It’s the heart of the home, which also means it’s where things can get the most chaotic. If you have a little sous chef running around, too, then you need some kid-friendly kitchen hacks to make sure the space works for them and their tiny hands. That’s why Drew is here with his best tips for keeping your cooking area a safe and fun place for every member of the family.

The kitchen shouldn’t feel dangerous or off-limits to your tots—everyone should feel comfortable cooking, cleaning, and connecting with one another. And as parents, this means you want to make sure you’re taking precautions for your kiddos where you can! Drew is taking us through the simple additions he and Linda have made in their kitchen to make it an organized zone that everyone can enjoy. Watch the full video above to find out exactly what he swears by in their cooking space, and get more ideas below, too.

1. Use Double-Duty Furniture

It’s easy for the amount of kids’ stuff to accumulate—before you know it, it can feel like there’s no room for anything else! That’s why double-duty kids furniture is so great. Drew has a fun piece that Parker and Piper love that can transform from a step stool into a toddlers’ table in seconds, snapping into place with locks to ensure safety. It’s simple, smart solutions like these that help a ton on organization and space-saving.

2. Incorporate Playful and Educational Pieces

Playful and educational touches—like letter and number magnets on the fridge or setting up an easel where the kids can practice writing—can help foster an environment where tots feel welcome hanging out alongside you in the kitchen. After all, it’s the heart of the home, and it’s a place for them, too!

3. Consider an Induction Range

Induction ranges offer an added layer of safety since they don’t get hot to the touch like gas ranges do. And for those tiny hands you love, that means one less thing to worry about when they’re helping you in the kitchen.

4. Add Safety Features Like Straps & Locks

One thing about kids and toddlers? They sure are curious! Adding simple safety straps to the oven and cabinets, and any other places that you don’t want your little ones rummaging through, can help keep them safe from accidents and prevent any let’s-empty-the-entire-drawer-of-cooking-utensils parties.

5. Avoid Mess With Hands-Free Hacks

Going hands-free in a messy zone can really help cut back on the ick and stick that can come from cooking (especially with kids!). In Drew’s home, they installed a little mechanism that will open up the cabinet garbage just by pushing in on the door. Nothing fancy here—just a little arm installed behind the cabinet door and voilà, you have yourself a hands-free setup!

6. Put Family Schedules on Display

It’s easier to keep track of your busy schedules when they’re all up on the wall for quick reference! In Drew’s house, they use a large digital calendar that has everything they and their team needs to get through the day, from schedule changes to pickup times, meals, travel dates, and even when the little ones need to brush their teeth.

7. Make the Pantry Work for Everyone

…Yes, including the kiddos! When they’re helping you cook, clean, or put away groceries, they need to get into these zones, too. So simple additions, like pull-out drawers in the pantry or a step stool under the sink, can give them the confidence to move around these spaces and help out.

8. Label Drawers & Containers

In the pantry, a label-maker is pretty much a must. (Jonathan and Zooey use one in their kitchen pantry too!) This way, it’s easier for everyone in the house to know exactly where ingredients, snacks, and canned goods live, and grab them quickly without having to rip apart the whole cabinet.

7 Adorable Kids’ Bedroom Ideas from Our Shows

These ideas will open up a world of imagination.

When you’re getting ready to start on your spring cleaning checklist, there are plenty of spots in the house that you know you’ll have to get to. Chore charts and cleaning schedules are sure to help keep you on track, but sometimes you have questions about the little things, and you don’t want to have to go digging for the answers. How often do you clean the bathroom drain? Do you have to flip your mattress? What’s the best way to tackle the inside of the fridge? These are all frequently asked cleaning questions that you might be wondering about during deep cleaning season—and we have the answers you’re looking for!

We cover all of that plus the important information nobody ever wants to think about. You know, common cleaning questions like, should you be sanitizing your sponges? Or what about how to stop the litter box from getting smelly? And does anyone really clean their couch as often as they should? Whether they’re questions that you might feel embarrassed to ask or little things around the house that are bugging you that you just want the answer to, we’re here to help. Below, we mapped it all out and organized the topics by room so you can easily find and solve your conundrum. We even called on our editors to see what cleaning curiosities they want solved, too. Now, let’s get your questions answered so you’re ready to tackle your to-dos with confidence.

Bathroom Cleaning Questions

Is Bleach Safe to Use in My Toilet and Sink?

In general, a diluted bleach solution is safe to use to disinfect the toilet and certain sink surfaces, but should be used sparingly and never in combination with other cleaners. For sink surfaces, bleach is safe for ceramic, porcelain, and enamel; do not use it on unsealed stone, cultured marble, stainless steel, or metal, as it can stain, corrode, or etch. For disinfection, use a heavily diluted bleach solution in a spray bottle (around 1 tablespoon of bleach per quart of water); let it sit for a minute or two, and then wipe it down with a damp, clean rag. Never pour bleach directly down the drain, as it can cause corrosion in your pipes.

What’s the Best Order to Clean a Bathroom?

Like every place in the house, you should always work top to bottom. Start with dusting or vacuuming the bathroom exhaust fan (ceiling), and then work your way down (dust high shelves, wipe down walls, then surfaces, then clean the floors). Likewise, work top to bottom in each individual area. For the toilet, for example, wipe down the top, then sides, the exterior and interior of the lid, and finally the base. This prevents dust from flying around or attaching to surfaces you already cleaned.

How Often Should I Clean the Bathroom?

It depends on your household, foot traffic, and bathroom type, but in general, you should clean the bathroom every 2-3 days, or at the very least, weekly to prevent bacteria buildup and mildew. Aim to wipe surfaces down daily, just as you would in the kitchen or living room, with a thorough cleaning at least once a week. Keeping on top of your cleaning schedule in the bathroom can help prevent illness and grime, and keep the bathroom smelling good.

How Do You Keep the Bathroom Smelling Fresh?

Staying on top of your bathroom cleaning tasks is the easiest way to keep it smelling fresh. The bathroom tends to hold onto smells easily, so sticking to a schedule is key. Don’t forget to clean those spaces that can trap smells easily, too, like the toilet brush holder, shower drains, and the toilet. Wipe down the inside and outside of the trash can when you take the trash out; wash and sanitize the inside and outside of the toilet brush holder after each use; clean the exterior and interior of the toilet at least once a week; and clean your shower head and the bathroom drains once a month to keep things smelling fresh. You can also use room sprays, candles, or diffusers for an added layer of scent.

Kitchen Cleaning Questions

Should I Sanitize My Sponges?

Short answer: Yes. Sponges hold onto a lot of bacteria. Think about what your sponge has touched in the last week. Dirty plates, used glasses and reusable straws, cutting boards—that’s a ton of different substances! And your kitchen sponges can harbor that bacteria, which can result in buildup, mold, and yeast. (Gross.) It’s recommended to replace your kitchen sponge every two weeks or so. But get this—you should actually be sanitizing your sponges every day. So every night after you’ve finished the dishes, give your sponge a quick zap in the microwave (killing 99.99999% of bacteria) or let it run through the dishwasher (killing 99.9998%). The USDA states that these are the two best ways of sanitizing your sponges.

How Do I Know When It’s Time to Toss My Pans and Buy New Ones?

Generally, stainless steel and cast iron pans are going to have the longest lifespan of any cookware. Their natural durability means, when taken care of properly, they can last for decades. Nonstick cookware, however, will last around five years at most. According to Made In Cookware, some ways to tell if it’s time to replace your nonstick cookware are food sticking, rust, scratches, discoloration, peeling, or warping. It’s important to replace your nonstick cookware as soon as you see any signs of wear like this. Depending on your nonstick cookware’s chemical treatment—be it PTFE, ceramic, or anodized aluminum—serious damage to the pan can even pose a health risk. Though nonstick cookware serves its purpose and can be helpful when cooking certain foods, if you’re looking to get more bang for your buck and keep potential toxin risk low, opt for cast iron or stainless steel pans.

Why Is There Greasy Residue On My Open Kitchen Shelving?

You’re not going to love this answer, but that greasy residue is actually from the oils and fats you use to cook. It can splatter further than you’d think, including onto cupboards, shelving, and backsplashes. But there are easy ways to make sure your kitchen stays clean and residue-free. If you have a range hood, take out the filters every week or every other week and clean them in soapy water, and spray down the outside of the range regularly. If you don’t have a range hood and can’t install one, you’ll need to take extra care of your kitchen. Wipe down surfaces weekly with a mix of equal parts water and vinegar. Also consider purchasing a splatter screen for your pans. Whatever your setup, always wipe down open areas in the kitchen with an all-purpose cleaner or a disinfectant to keep your space free of residue, grime, and bacteria.

How Do I Clean My Coffee Pot?

Yes, you should be cleaning your coffee machine! Once a month or so, depending on how frequently you’re using your coffee pot, give your machine a good clean. Running the machine with vinegar does the trick. It’ll sanitize the machine, rid any parts of mold or mildew, and make your coffee taste better. In fact, how to clean a coffee machine is actually pretty simple! According to HGTV, you should pour four cups of vinegar through the reservoir, let the vinegar sit for 30 minutes to do its magic, and then run a brew cycle. Afterwards, make sure you run the machine through with plain water three or four times, or until the vinegar smell is fully gone. (Note: Some coffeemakers have specific cleaning instructions, so make sure to check your manual first.)

Kitchen Cleaning Must-Haves

Bedroom Cleaning Questions

How Frequently Should I Actually Wash My Sheets?

Experts say that you should wash your sheets at least once a week. And according to Sleep Foundation, “Some people should wash their sheets even more often than once a week. If you have pets, and particularly if you let them sleep in your bed, a wash every 3 – 4 days is recommended.” We spend a ton of time in bed (up to 60+ hours a week!), and with the combination of dirt, natural oils, sweat, and other buildup, it’s important to keep your bedding clean. And don’t forget to clean and flip your mattress every four months or so too.

How Do I Stop the Mirror From Getting Dusty So Quickly?

Quick lesson in physics: Dust is attracted to statically-charged surfaces. And something as simple as wiping a mirror down in a circular motion can actually create static electricity. This becomes a perfect love affair between a mirror and pesky dust particles. So eliminating that static from the beginning will prolong dust from settling the moment you’re done cleaning. First, wipe down the mirror, without any sprays or cleaners, in a side-to-side motion using a dry microfiber cloth. This will remove dust particles and avoid static. (Never use a paper towel—they leave residue, tiny dust particles, and can actually damage your mirror.) Afterward, use a cleaner of your choice and a clean microfiber cloth, again using the side-to-side method. Make sure to leave the mirror as dry as possible, so dust doesn’t stick to any leftover residue.

How Do I Keep Clothes Smelling Fresh After I Wash Them and Put Them Away?

Scent satchels, charcoal packs, and odor-removing packs will help keep your drawers and closets smelling fresh. Place a pack inside each of your drawers to keep your clothes smelling as clean as they did out of the dryer, and hang moisture-absorbing or scented satchels on a couple of your hangers inside the closet to do the same. As for regular upkeep on how to make your clothes smell good daily, it’s as simple as using a laundry detergent that has a scent you love.

Can You Wash Your Pillows? If So, How Do You Wash Them?

You can (and definitely should!) be cleaning your pillows around two to four times per year, depending on if you have pets, tend to be a hot sleeper, or maybe do some midnight snacking in bed. Depending on your pillow fill, Consumer Reports recommends different washing strategies. Wash your pillows in the washing machine on the gentle cycle if they’re down, feather-filled, or polyester, and hand-wash with a damp cloth and mild detergent if they’re made of memory foam. But always follow the manufacturer guidelines first before jumping in. Pillow protectors and mattress protectors will also help keep your pillows and bed linens in good shape.

Bedroom Cleaning Products

Living Room Cleaning Questions

How Often Should I Clean My Couch?

Regular vacuum cleaning between and underneath couch cushions and pillows should happen weekly or biweekly. If you eat or drink, cuddle with your pets, and/or sleep on the couch, you should be vacuuming the cushions more frequently. But deep cleaning, using an upholstery cleaner (like the Bissell Little Green Upholstery Cleaner), is best done every four to six months, and more often if you deal with things like pet odor.

How Frequently Should I Mop My Floors?

First thing’s first—your environment, lifestyle, and household will dramatically change this answer. Pets, kids, how often you host, and whether or not you allow shoes around the house are all small things to consider when thinking about your mopping schedule. A good rule of thumb is to vacuum or sweep daily, and mop at least once a week. But if you have a more active household, mopping every other day or every three days is a good practice. Bonus: If you’re someone who likes efficiency, consider investing in a vacuum mop, so you can combine two chores into one.

How Do I Clean the TV Without Leaving Streaks On the Screen?

Though glass cleaners and all-purpose sprays are great for cleaning surfaces like mirrors, tabletops, and other home areas, your computer and TV screens require different care. If you’re wondering how to clean the TV without leaving any streaks, a cleaning spray specifically made for screens will be your best bet. There are a ton of great eco-friendly screen cleaning products that clean everything from laptops to tablets, televisions, and other electronic devices. Whichever product you choose though, a screen cleaner should be part of your regular cleaning arsenal.

Miscellaneous Cleaning Questions

How Do I Clean My Cell Phone?

Take a second and think about how frequently you touch your phone. Often, we’re typing on it with dirty hands, pressing the phone up to our skin when we make phone calls, letting it sit at the bottom of bags or inside pockets… your cell phone touches a lot of surfaces. Which means you should be cleaning it often—once a week at the very most, but ideally once a day. Verizon recommends using an antibacterial cloth or a 70% isopropyl alcohol swab and gently wiping down the outside of your cell phone and phone case. Make sure to avoid letting moisture into any ports. This way, your phone stays sanitized and you minimize the risk of germs spreading onto other surfaces in your home.

How Do I Keep the Litter Box from Smelling?

Litter box odor solutions can seem like a dead end. Sometimes, it feels like no matter what you do, the smell will always linger. We’re here to help you change that. The type of kitty litter you use often has an affect on how it holds onto smells. Clay-based and non-clumping litters are the least effective at trapping smells, while plant-based, silica-based, and clumping litter have better odor control. Apart from your litter, though, cleaning the litter box daily and washing the litter box once a month, and sprinkling baking soda inside of the litter box are surefire ways to get your litter box odor-free. One of our editors also recommends using the Zero Odor Litter Box spray to help keep stinks at bay.

Where Should I Really Be Dusting?

Your regular dusting schedule and your deep clean dusting schedule will vary. It may seem like an insignificant task, but dusting regularly can help prevent sicknesses, reduce allergies, and help keep your entire home clean. Think about the surfaces that get frequent use or spaces that get more traffic, like the kitchen, living room, bedroom, and dining room. Where you should be dusting in your house regularly often comes down to where you spend the most time. So surfaces in these rooms should get a weekly wipe-down and thorough surface dusting. Sparkle and Shine says dusting places like windowsills, door frames, ceiling fans, and walls can be done less frequently, when you give your house a good deep cleaning.

I Don’t Want to Use Harsh Chemicals. How Can I Clean Sustainably?

If you’re someone who opts for eco-friendly cleaners or hacks that use household items to disinfect, you’re not alone! Around here, we love utilizing eco-conscious swaps whenever we can, especially with pets and kids in the house. There are a few items that you should always have laying around that will work on almost anything: baking soda, distilled white vinegar, dish soap, and rubbing alcohol. Consider making your own garbage disposal bombs using vinegar and lemon peels, or tackling the bathtub drain with baking soda and white vinegar. Sustainable cleaning options are abundant, and often, just as effective as cleaning with chemicals.

AJ and Carin have been searching for a home for about 10 months now, but keep hitting a wall. They’ve gone hundreds of thousands of dollars over asking price, searched in different neighborhoods, and tried their best to keep their chins up. The couple lost everything in the Eaton fires in 2025, and they just want to find a place they can finally call home. They saw a house they think they have a shot at, but they want Drew and Jonathan to come take a look first and assess the pros and cons. On Property Brothers: Under Pressure this week, the Bros are hoping they can help AJ and Carin rebuild their life after the tragic fires, and find them a home that makes them feel safe and comfortable.

They have a healthy $1.3M budget, and though the home they’re looking at is nearly at the top of that (at $1.2M), it does have a tenant space in the basement they’d plan to use as a short-term rental. The only issue is that it’s an attached unit, so they’d be sharing a common area space. However, they like the idea of being able to help offset some mortgage costs and even bring in a little extra income—especially since they’re paying for two more years of college and have parents who are getting older.

Drew and Jonathan showed AJ and Carin other properties, too, with a variety of pros and cons: They saw one home that was move-in ready, with space to spruce up the backyard and give AJ the outdoor kitchen he’s been dreaming of, but it didn’t have an ADU space. They viewed another that was over-budget, but had everything they were looking for, including a detached ADU. After being out-bid on the second one that they loved most, AJ and Carin went right back to the drawing board. So, AJ and Carin decided to move forward on the original property with the basement rental—they were sick of waiting around, and they wanted to create a home. “We’re at the breaking point of compromise to an extent,” Carin says. “I want to settle down somewhere, and unpack the few things we have, and start building back.”

Before & Afters
Host-Worthy Backyard Lounge

Luckily, AJ and Carin were able to purchase the house under asking, so they had a little more cushion to work with when it comes to renovations.

A large chunk of that was put into their fabulous outdoor lounge and dining area, where they’re excited to host game nights, dinner soirees, and watch parties with friends and family. They included a cozy sectional sofa, a sweet picnic-style dining table, and of course, had to go all-out on the backyard kitchen for AJ.

Comfy, Cozy Rental Bedroom

White-washed pine walls and cozy, warm bedding makes this rental bedroom feel like a home away from home for short-term guests spending the night. Bedside drawers and plenty of cabinetry on the opposite wall provide the storage guests need to feel organized on vacation, while a sweet gift basket perched on the bed boosts rental appeal in photographs and adds that extra memorable touch.

…And Modern Kitchenette

For the short-term rental kitchen, AJ and Carin wanted the space to feel streamlined, but still equipped with everything a guest might need. They included a fridge, microwave, and coffee station, with a modern bistro set that helps make the room feel complete.

AJ’s Sophisticated Office Space

AJ is a huge Dodgers fan, and one of the things he lost in the fires was his extensive bobbleheads collection. Drew and Jonathan wanted to surprise him with a few things to help start off his new Dodgers memorabilia, so they hung rally towels and framed team photos to make the space feel like his own again.

When it comes to the best vacuum cleaners, it can be hard to find one that checks off all the boxes. There are slim, cordless vacuums; tried-and-true bagged vacuums; classic upright vacuums; and new-age robot vacuums that can help keep your floors clean. Each has its pros and cons, but not every vacuum is for every household. Families with multiple kids and pets running around might find large bin capacities and intense suction power a necessity, while single studio apartment dwellers might need something that won’t take up space, but still gets the job done. The other challenge outside of the array of options is that so many models are being touted as the best-of-the-best. But the one that kept sticking out to me was the Shark Stratos cordless vacuum. I wanted to see if it really lived up to the hype, so I decided to test it and find out for myself.

What makes the Shark Stratos different from other cordless vacuums—and the big selling point—is all in its tech. The ControlSense IQ feature actually increases suction power to pick up heavier amounts of dust and debris, as well as the minuscule particles you can’t see. In combination with the LED head, it’s supposed to make cleaning your floors feel more efficient. Over the course of two months, I tested it in every room in my house multiple times a day to see if it really stood up to it’s claims. Here are my honest thoughts.

How I Tested It

My husband and I live in a two-story row home in Philadelphia with hardwood floors throughout, a couple low-pile area rugs, and tile in the bathroom. We also have one long-haired cat. On top of her fur and my long hair, we cook and host friends pretty frequently too, so there’s a lot of foot traffic in our place. Many people have told me I’m a clean freak (I take it as a compliment at this point) and I admit, I do take the cleanliness of my space seriously. I vacuum at least once per day (but more often twice), stay on top of weekly dusting and deep cleans, and make sure we’re always ready for company at a moment’s notice. All that to say, I definitely put the Shark Stratos to work.

I tested the Stratos for two and a half months so I could get a good idea at how it cleans not just at first, but over time, as well as noting any issues that popped up. I used it in every room for multiple purposes, from cleaning the floor to vacuuming the curtains, bed, and even as a dusting tool before going in with my spray cleaners, testing both of the included attachments (a brush head and a duster/crevice tool).

My Overall Review

It picked up everything from dust and debris to dirt, cat litter, hair, fur, glitter (we had a New Year’s Eve party…), and crumbs with unbelievable ease. I found the battery run time to be impressive as well, lasting the promised true hour (sometimes more) with each run. The DuoClean PowerFins two-brush roll system definitely caught debris that would have otherwise been left behind or spat out the other end in a single-brush roll vacuum, which made the overall dirt pickup feel much more thorough. On carpet, tile, and hardwood alike, the Stratos provided a really powerful suction. Combined with the CleanSense IQ technology, I left each vacuum session feeling like my floors were truly clean.

The one thing the Stratos had a hard time dealing with fully was ice melt salt from our winter boots. Of course, this is notoriously difficult for a vacuum to pick up, so I was surprised it got any of the melted crystals at all, to be honest. But because this substance tends to stick onto floors, with a quick mop, the salt was completely gone. So it’s safe to say the Stratos at least retrieved all of the crystalline particles.

Overall, I think this is a fantastic vacuum. I’ll be using it going forward (might even have to retire my Dyson…) for both everyday cleans as well as deep cleans and dusting duties. It’s 100% worth it, in my opinion.

Top Features

  1. Maneuverability: Can collapse in half with the plush of a button while in use, which is super helpful to get under the sofa, cabinets, and bed.
  2. Powerful suction: Great suction, plus it boosts power when it comes into contact with unseen debris.
  3. Dual rollers: Helps pick up more dust and debris even when you’re going backwards.
  4. Odor neutralizer: An awesome addition, particularly for use on carpets and area rugs.

What I Loved

  • The CleanSense IQ tech is amazing. I love that it increases power to pick up the bits of debris I can’t see.
  • I love the HEPA filtration feature. It makes the room truly feel cleaner after vacuuming.
  • The collapsable arm is a total game changer once you get the hang of it. I could go under furniture, couches, heavy buffet tables, and more without any effort.
  • The suction power is fantastic. I never felt like I had to go over an area multiple times in order to get the area clean. The floors felt truly spotless.

What Could Be Improved

  • There are only two included attachments—I wish there were a couple more accessories to help with specific jobs.
  • The vacuum head isn’t very heavy, so it can lift off the floor sometimes during cleaning, which can be annoying.

Overall Review

If you want a cordless vacuum that’s easy to maneuver, with odor-control features, and powerful suction, then yes, the Shark Stratos is absolutely worth it. It’s a high-quality cordless vacuum that’ll pivot into hard-to-reach areas in a cinch, and the CleanSense IQ tech is something I can no longer live without. And oftentimes, you can even find it on sale. (At time of publishing, it’s $299 on Amazon.)

Every year when springtime arrives, we’re excited about the sunshine and the warm-weather fun to come. We start planning our spring break vacations, knocking out our spring cleaning tasks, and refreshing our homes with the best spring decor ideas to celebrate the season. Springtime usually means more color, floral patterns, and whimsical details, and there are so many ways to bring these elements into our space.

And it’s easy to prep our home decor for the season without much effort at all. In fact, decorating for spring could be as simple as putting fresh flowers in a pretty vase, hanging a wreath on the front door, or switching out your throw pillow covers. You could also upgrade your everyday essentials like table linens and dinnerware with more spring-forward options. Of course, there are also plenty of ideas for a maximalist approach if you want to inject spring into every corner! No matter how much or how little you’d like to decorate, a nod to the April showers and May flowers will go a long way in making your home feel warm and welcoming.

Simple Ways to Celebrate Spring

  • Embrace Nature: Celebrate the season by bringing the beauty of nature inside. The flowers are starting to bloom, and color is coming back into the world around us. Mimic what you see outside by positioning plants, faux or fresh flowers, and nature-inspired patterns into your interior.
  • Go for Breathable Fabrics: Spring usually means warmer weather is on the horizon, and gone are the days of needing flannel sheets or heavy faux fur blankets and pillows. Store these items away for when wintertime rolls back around, and instead, swap in more lightweight, breathable fabrics like waffle knit throw blankets, linen pillow covers, or cotton sheets.
  • Incorporate Pastels: The season is pretty much synonymous with pastels. As we ease out of winter’s moody hues, we inch more toward summer’s vibrant color palette. Transitioning from a major season (winter) to a minor season (spring) can be gradual, so pop in some pastels throughout your decor to ease you out of wintertime.
  • Refresh Small Spaces: Decorating for spring doesn’t have to mean redecorating every space in your home! Simple touches go a long way. Swap out the throw pillows on the sofa, layer in a spring-inspired tablecloth, and incorporate more spring-forward serving platters into your hosting routine. They’re subtle changes, but they make a difference.
  • Make an Impact in the Entryway: Your entryway is the first thing people see when they come over. Make it feel welcoming for them and for spring with a pretty wreath, a washable entryway rug (rainy season will be here soon!), a lush flower bed, or even a pastel striped cushion on the porch swing.

Popular home design styles shift and change just as any trend cycle does. It’s the intersection of the crossroads between culture, media, and the trend pendulum. The science behind trend cycling and style predictions (yes, there is a science to it!) is based off of quantitative and qualitative analytics, cultural and environmental research, and historical data. All of these details tell a story about the soon-to-be popular colors, patterns, styles, and more.

In 2024, interior designers predicted a rise in warm-toned palettes and patterns that contrasted the stark white era of years prior. The 2025 colors of the year leaned into this even more, with darker, moodier shades taking center stage to provide the rich depth we were searching for. And now, in many 2026 Color of the Year predictions, we see a shift into dusty, muted colors that instantly romanticize a room with layered depth.

But it’s not just every 365 days that popular tones rise and fall. We see it each month as we pass through seasonal cycles, too. Color is nuanced. Every shade has a different impact. Deep aubergine might make a space feel more intimate than plum. Chartreuse and army green offer two starkly different styles. The same goes for pumpkin orange and burnt sienna. We were inspired by this, and decided to take a deeper look at color trend forecasting to bring you our Color of the Month. Every four weeks, we’ll discuss a new hue that we see embodying the essence of that 30-day period. Keep reading to explore these stylish shades and see how you can incorporate them into your home design.

March Color of the Month: Pistachio

Spring is springing oh-so-soon, and what better way to welcome the season than with the pop of color we’ve been waiting for? For March’s Color of the Month, we found inspiration through soft florals, comfortable fabrics, and the promise of April showers to come—bringing Pistachio into view. We spoke to our in-house trend expert and SVP of Creative and Design, Elizabeth Garcia, about her take on Pistachio, and where she sees the trend headed this month, and into the season to come. “Landscapes, botanicals and plantopia-inspired colors and textures will be key for this trend,” she says. “Hues range from soft sage to deep olive, and styles are balanced between refined and elegant and cozy and casual, with modern touches.”

February Color of the Month: Pink Frost

february color of the month, pink frost

Temps are still as cold as ever, but there’s romance in the air as we begin shedding our winter blues (or dreaming about it, at least!). Pinks and reds are the usual shades to mark the season of love, and this February, we’re leaning into the calmness of Pink Frost. Like pale pink icing, this hue brings softness and warmth into our homes to keep us cozy during the shortest month of the year. This playful blushing color can make a bold statement against rich, darker tones of moss and navy blue, or complement softer tones like sage and caramel.

January 2026 Color of the Month: Vintage Indigo

Vintage Indigo is a deep hue meant to complement and contrast. Paired with natural wood tones or gold patina, this inky color would bring unmatched character to any space in need of some depth. The rich shade of navy resembles aged denim, with an implied history behind it—similar to the memories you’ve made in those favorite pair of jeans you’ve had for years. And for as cool-toned as Vintage Indigo is, the indulgent shade of blue can actually provide a surprising amount of warmth, especially when enveloped into the room by color drenching the walls or in adding heavy fabrics like velvet.

December Color of the Month: For-Evergreen

When you think of December, what do you see? We picture chestnuts roasting on an open fire; holiday get-togethers with loved ones; plenty of hot cocoa; and of course, the classic combination of red and green. To ring in the most wonderful time of the year, we’re embracing the natural beauty of the evergreen with our December Color of the Month: For-Evergreen. “For-Evergreen connects people toward wellness, sustainability, and nature-inspired living in their homes,” says Garcia. “Its lush color feels calming and offers a mix of serenity and luxury that people love for their home.” This deep, inviting shade of emerald fits well in both standout pieces (like a deep green velvet sofa) and smaller decor (like standout lamps or drinkware) as well.

November Color of the Month: Cherry Lacquer

Cherry Lacquer is both classic and alluring; luxurious and daring. After speaking with Elizabeth Garcia and our editors, we determined this emboldened red to be the perfect fit for the month of thanks. “This rich, wine-like hue evokes the joy of gathering around a table, sharing meals, or hosting friends. Its deep color elicits warmth and connection, making homes feel full and welcoming,” she says. Incorporate it into soft touches in the home, like bedding, blankets, and pillows; or make a splash with an unexpected pop of Cherry Lacquer in your flower vases or table lamps.

October Color of the Month: Midnight Dusk

midnight dusk color of the month for october 2025

This deep, blue violet hue is set to be the color of October and all its Halloween magic ahead. There’s a vintage feel to Midnight Dusk that makes it perfectly suited for the season of the witch. “This shadowy hue sits between blue and purple and lends a sense of mystery and escapism. This enchanted shade is soothing, yet captures the trend toward dark and dramatic home decor,” Garcia says. Incorporate the color throughout your home in bursts: a moody, patterned throw blanket; a rich-colored bouquet; and dark taper candles. Not only will it add contrast, but it’ll amplify the essence of the Halloween season—dark, mysterious, and ghoulishly chic.

What’s Next?

Tune in at the end of February to see what we have predicted for the March 2026 Color of the Month, as well as style inspiration and more home decor tips to get your space ready for spring.

We love our furry family members, but there’s no denying that they can bring in dirt, odors, and hair—just like we can. An extra set of paws around the house means extra time put into a routine that makes their lives, and our own, feel clean and tidy. Between busy schedules and growing families, keeping the house as grime-free as possible might feel like a never-ending game of trial and error. That’s why we spoke to Ciara Lavelle, pet expert at Chewy, to get her advice on how to achieve a clean house when you have pets.

Ciara gave us her insider secrets on the best things you can do to maintain a home that smells, feels, and looks truly clean; along with tips specific for both cat and dog families; and even some handy hacks for neutralizing pet odors around the house. She also gave us some recommended products that actually work, from pet hair removers to odor eliminators and the best pet cleaning tools. Alongside her advice, we also searched through helpful hacks from real people on Reddit that’ll make your life with pets a little less ruff. Dive into everything you need to know below.

Expert Tips to Keep Your House Clean With Pets

1. Stay Consistent

“The key to keeping a clean home with multiple pets is consistency. With double (or triple, or even more) of the fur, paws, and personality, messes can add up quickly and start to feel overwhelming,” Ciara says. That’s why some daily tidying is a must.

2. Create a Simple Weekly Cleaning Routine

To get in the habit of her first tip, try this: “Create a simple routine—where bathing, washing beds, cleaning litter boxes, and other chores are scheduled throughout the week—to help break tasks into manageable pieces,” Ciara says. “Assigning different responsibilities to different days keeps upkeep from feeling daunting and makes it much easier to stay on top of things.”

3. Use Cleaning Tools That Work Smarter, Not Harder

There are a ton of products out there for households with pets, but not all of them are worth it. Research and invest in cleaning products that’ll make your life easier—not harder. Machines like vacuum mops, robot vacuums, or rubber brooms can help make sweeping the floors less of a chore, while pet-specific cleaners like enzymatic sprays and carpet cleaners will ensure you’re using products that are built to stand up to pet messes.

Q + A With the Expert

What’s the best way to neutralize everyday pet odors?

“It really depends on the odor and the location. Enzymatic cleaners work best for urine smells. Laundry boosters can help with pet odors on clothing or bedding. Carpet and floor cleaners designed for pet odors can help your mop or wet/dry vacuum eliminate odors too,” Ciara says.

“Whatever you use, make sure it’s safe for your pet. Many cleaners have ingredients that are unhealthy and even dangerous for dogs and cats, especially if they’re consumed,” she adds. “Check the label for assurance that it’s dog- and/or cat-safe.”

How often should you wash pet beds?

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends regularly cleaning all pet bedding as often as you would your own items (once a week) to reduce the risk of disease-causing organisms for both pets and people. If the bed gets visibly dirty or stinky between washes, it’s a good idea to wash it sooner than later,” Ciara says.

Cleaning Tips for Cat Owners

1. Use Enzymatic Cleaners

“Enzymatic cleaners like Nature’s Miracle Cat Urine Destroyer are the gold standard when it comes to removing cat urine odors. They’re formulated to break down the chemicals in cat urine that cause the stink. But before using any cleaner, there are a few steps you can take to maximize its effectiveness,” Ciara says:

  1. First, gently blot the area with cold water and a clean cloth or paper towel. This helps remove as much fresh urine as possible and prevents it from setting deeper into the fabric or carpet fibers. Avoid scrubbing, which can spread the stain or damage delicate surfaces.
  2. Now it’s time for the cleaner. It’s a good idea to test the cleaner on a small, out of sight part of your upholstery first, to make sure it doesn’t cause discoloration or other damage. Once you know it’s safe, soak the soiled area with the cleaner—don’t be afraid to really drench it.
  3. Enzymes need time to do their job, so give the cleaner a few minutes to soak in and break down. The instructions on your cleaner should tell you how long to let the product set.
  4. When the time is up, soak the liquid back up out of your furniture. A wet-dry vacuum or shop vac is the most effective way to do this. If you don’t have one, many home improvement and grocery stores have them available for rent. A more DIY option is to use paper towels to soak the liquid out of your upholstery.

2. Clean the Litter Box Regularly

“Regular litter box care is about more than just smell. When you scoop your cat’s waste daily, you’re removing urine and stool that can harbor bacteria and strong odors,” Ciara says. “You’re also keeping your cat’s bathroom fresh and tidy.”

“Regularly giving your cat’s litter box a full cleaning—not just removing waste, but emptying the litter and scrubbing the box itself—also helps keep things fresh,” she says.

3. Try Scratching Deterrents

“Scratching is instinctive behavior in cats—you can’t stop them from doing it, but you can train them to scratch on appropriate objects like cat scratchers, trees, and toys,” Ciara says. “When you catch your cat scratching furniture, gently redirect them to a better place to sink in their claws—and when they do use those appropriate items, reward them with treats and attention. Over time, many cats learn where it’s ok to scratch and where it’s not.”

“In the meantime, do your best to make their favorite scratching ground undesirable. This means using cat scratching deterrents in the spots they frequent most,” she adds. “One way to protect furniture from cat scratching is to cover it with a tight-fitting sheet or blanket. A throw blanket that covers their favorite spots can even be a nice decorative touch. For small surfaces, cover the area with something that is sticky, smooth, or slick, like double-sided tape.”

Cleaning Tips for Dog Owners

1. Keep Their Paws Clean

“In addition to cleaning your dog’s paws before they come inside, you can also take steps to keep your dog’s paws clean in advance, like training them to wear dog boots or keeping their paw pads trimmed so excess hair doesn’t pick up extra dirt,” Ciara says. “Some pet parents have even trained their dogs to wipe their paws on the mat before coming inside! Regular baths and brushing also help rid your dog’s fur of hidden dirt that would otherwise end up on your floors or furniture.”

Dog cleaning wipes are great to have on hand for when unexpected messes arise—you can keep a package by the door to wipe their paws clean when you’re headed inside. Some dog parents swear by the Paw Plunger, which submerges and scrubs dogs’ paws one at a time,” she says.

2. Don’t Skimp on Brushing and Lint-Rolling

Ciara says that pet hair is one of the top complaints people have when it comes to keeping their space clean. But staying consistent with vacuuming, lint rolling, and brushing their coats can help contain the mess and prevent it from becoming a bigger problem. Regularly lint roll surfaces and linens, and make sure to vacuum spots where fur can accumulate, like under sofas and pet beds. “Vacuum cleaners designed with pet hair in mind can be lifesavers, too, especially during the fall and spring shedding seasons,” Ciara adds.

3. Find a Grooming Balance

“There’s no one-size-fits-all bathing schedule—how often you should bathe your dog depends on their coat type as well as their lifestyle and skin condition. Anyone who’s watched the AKC dog show knows that dogs’ coats come in a wide variety of lengths and textures, and each one has its own needs. If you’re not sure how often or what products to use when bathing your dog, your vet is a great person to ask,” Ciara says.

“Some dogs of the same breed and coat type will need baths more often because they tend to get messy. Maybe they accompany you on long hikes or trips to the beach, or maybe they just love rolling in that smelly patch of grass on your daily walk. And if your dog has a skin issue, you should defer to your vet’s advice when it comes to bathing,” she adds. “Bathing your dog too frequently can dry out their coat and lead to skin problems, so it can be a delicate balance. Again, check in with your vet about the best grooming routine for your pup.”

Advice From Pet Owners

Alongside the advice from our Chewy pet expert, we also combed through some helpful Reddit threads to see if there was any more useful or creative solutions folks had from their real-world experience. Here are some of the most helpful tidbits we found.

What to Do If You Have Multiple Pets

User InternationalStar942 has a house full of animals—we’re talking 13 cats and three dogs!—and says they get asked what their secret to a clean house is all the time. Here’s the cliff notes version of their best tips and tasks:

  • Do a full-house deep clean the day before trash day (all trash goes right to the curb); go room by room, starting with surfaces first
  • Mop with the Bissell CrossWave vacuum mop—under sofas once a week; under bed and larger furniture items four times per year
  • Clean litter boxes every day; dump, wash, and refill litter boxes completely once a week
  • Vacuum and mop under litter boxes and kennels/crates once a week
  • Wash pet food and water bowls once a week
  • For pet messes, clean immediately and toss in the outside trash; then, wash the floor and surrounding area
  • Clean kitchen countertops and bathroom countertops every day
  • Vacuum whole house every day or every other day
  • Wash animal bedding once a week
  • Use couch covers or drape blankets, and wash them once a week (this helps mitigate how often you need to vacuum the sofa)
  • Immediately fold and put away clothes after washing and drying; use a lint roller while folding if need be
  • Use a hamper with a lid to minimize hair in the washing machine/dryer
  • Make the bed every morning (to avoid pet hair in your sheets)

How to Maintain a Clean House With Large Dogs

In the Reddit thread here, user Novaskyd asked for community help on how to keep the house clean with large dogs. It can be hard to keep up! But commenters had helpful responses—here are some standout tips:

  • Robot vacuums will really help cut down on dirt, especially if you run them multiple times a day
  • Make paw wiping a habit: Keep wipes or a towel by the door and wipe their paws every time they come back inside
  • Invest in a good air purifier
  • Use sofa covers or blankets on furniture and wash them regularly (every three days to a week)
  • Use mats or trays under their food and water bowls

Along with these helpful expert tips, you can also explore Chewy’s month-long deep clean reset for pet owners, which outlines four weekly routines to help focus on pet-related cleaning tasks in a manageable amount of time. A happy, healthy home starts with a space that’s clean for everyone!

Not only did Etsy announce their gorgeous Patina Blue as their 2026 color of the year—for the first time, they also released a texture of the year: Washed Linen. Together, the two make up the trends predicted to explode this coming year. In Etsy’s announcement, “Patina blue is one of those shades that just instantly makes you exhale. Inspired by copper’s natural aging process, it embodies the quiet magic of change and the way materials evolve as they’re lived-in and loved. The hue reflects a growing appreciation for pieces that wear in, not out—which helps explain why searches for “blue copper” have surged more than 3x. Patina blue brings a calm confidence to any space, whether your style leans more modern, vintage-inspired, or somewhere in between.”

Silhouette by Benjamin Moore

For their 2026 Color of the Year, Benjamin Moore has decided on Silhouette AF-655. “The connection between fashion and interiors has always been a source of inspiration but this year in particular, we’ve noticed a renewed interest in suiting and classic silhouettes; the resurgence of timeless pieces; and the growing interest in the brown color family,” said Andrea Magno, director, color marketing & design at Benjamin Moore. “Silhouette embodies these qualities with its depth and luxurious blend of burnt umber and delicate charcoal undertones. Like a perfectly tailored suit, this hue has the versatility and softness to bring a space from expected to exceptional.”

Divine Damson is a nutty, chocolate-plum color that can transform a room into a show-stopping design. According to the Graham & Brown site: “A perfect deep damson shade, the Color of the Year 2026 is a timeless and versatile color that suits a variety of styles and environments. The dark damson color evokes a sense of elegance, luxury and sophistication.” Alongside their Color of the Year, explore their Design of the Year (Eternal Weave, a whimsical print that mixes natural and mystical designs) and Mural of the Year (Eternal City, inspired by the Pink City of Jaipur) on their site, too.

Coffee Bean by Krylon

Grounded and muddy, Coffee Bean is the perfect addition to the home that aims to create a warm atmosphere. “With its rich, earthy depth, Krylon 2026 Color of the Year, Coffee Bean, lays a harmonious foundation for projects that echo the beauty of nature,” said Lisbeth Parada, Color Marketing Manager at Krylon. Use the spray paint for a DIY project, or incorporate the versatile color in small touches throughout the home and yard.

Midnight Garden by Dunn-Edwards

Dunn-Edwards has chosen a muted green hue as their marker for 2026: Midnight Garden. It’s a serene neutral that can blend easily into many spaces and styles. “Midnight Garden is the green that works everywhere—from cabinetry and walls to accents and exteriors,” said Lauren Hoferkamp, Color Marketing Manager at Dunn-Edwards. “Its versatility makes it equally at home on interiors and exteriors, pairing effortlessly with natural textures, warm neutrals, or sleek minimalism.”

Universal Khaki by Sherwin-Williams

If you’re looking for a stain to pair well with just about any of your decor no matter your style or taste, you can’t go wrong with Special Walnut. “With wood emerging as a key element in interior design—from furniture and flooring to cabinetry and architectural details—there’s a renewed appreciation for finishes that enhance its natural character,” says Lisbeth Parada, Color and Design Lead at Minwax. “Special Walnut delivers with a classic, dimensional tone that feels both familiar and fresh. Its versatility makes it a favorite across styles and applications—whether you’re restoring a vintage piece or finishing a weekend project.”

Melodious Ivory by Dutch Boy Paints

“Our 2026 Color of the Year invites homeowners to embrace what matters most—comfort, quality and connection,” says Lisbeth Parada, Color Marketing Manager at Dutch Boy Paints. “Melodious Ivory offers a classic backdrop that beautifully supports the textures, elements and personal touches that make a space truly feel like home.” And what’s great about it, too, is how well it complements other colors and patterns. Its warmth will provide that cozy feel no matter what, and its neutrality acts as the perfect companion to any bold design.

Warm Eucalyptus by Valspar

“Warm Eucalyptus is more than just a beautiful shade of green, it’s a reflection of the comfort we crave in our homes,” says Sue Kim, Director of Color Marketing at Valspar. “Its warm undertones create a grounded, welcoming mood while drawing inspiration from nature and the familiarity of retro design. This is a color that encourages restoration and resilience.” This shade could look beautiful just about anywhere when utilized right. Pair with complementary shades of rich brown, amber, or dark walnut for a vintage-inspired look that still feels fresh.

Warm Mahogany by Glidden

Glidden calls Warm Mahogany “a rich, grounded red that has a classic vibe, but feels brand new when used in big doses or sleek designs.” This shade would be perfect for color drenching, as we can see here in the photo above. It’s striking, yet organic, so it’ll never feel too harsh. “DIYers are faced with selecting a color that fits within the larger lifestyle of a space, not just one prescribed function or moment in time,” says Ashley McCollum, Glidden Paint Color Expert. “We’re torn between colors that feel authentic, personal, and safe, and those that give a rush of newness, risk, and excitement. Converging style and history, Warm Mahogany is a perfect match with the Glidden brand’s 150-year heritage—bold enough to draw immediate attention and reserved enough to make a timeless statement. This color truly outlasts the moment and owns the mood!” McCollum adds.

If you’ve seen the Park House or their newly renovated New York City apartment, you know that Jonathan and Zooey have no problems merging their design tastes. In both spaces, they combined whimsical pattern, color, and ornate detailing to create homes they both love—and love being in together. But how exactly did Jonathan and Zooey work on combining their interior design styles to get that picture-perfect look that feels effortless? And if you’re having trouble getting on the same page as your living partner, what advice does he have for you?

Jonathan is spilling all his secrets on how to blend your individual tastes with a significant other or roommates , and sharing advice on how to combine your styles in a way that feels cohesive, intentional, and respectful—rather than messy, disjointed, and stressful. See his tips in detail in the video above, and don’t forget to follow the Drew and Jonathan YouTube channel to get helpful advice and tips like this every week. (P.S. If you haven’t watched the walk-through video of his and Zooey’s NYC apartment, you’re missing out! Catch it here and see the exclusive look into all the fine details.)

Jonathan’s Tips on Merging Design Styles With Your Significant Other

1. Discuss Must-Haves vs. Nice-to-Haves

When you’re first combining households, you likely can’t (and probably shouldn’t!) bring everything you both have. To avoid an overwhelming amount of boxes on move-in day, discuss each other’s wants. vs needs so you start off strong and on the same page. “Is there a family heirloom, or a collectable, or a gift that you gave each other that is an absolute must and you want to make sure it’s showcased? Put it on the must-have list,” Jonathan says. “The other stuff that’s like, ‘Well, we have it but we can probably do without it.’ Move it over on the other list. That way, you already know here’s where we draw the line in the sand and here’s the stuff that’s maybe not as important.”

2. Whoever Uses a Space More Often Has the Final Say

“In our house, Zooey is the cook. She is amazing, and runs that kitchen—so she should have the final say in what we do in that space because it really is her domain,” he says. Likewise, if you have an office, you could take the lead in what you want that room to look like. It’s not that the other person can’t have an opinion, but if one half functions in that space more often, they should get to lead the charge on the foundation of that area.

3. In Rooms You Share, Build Your Style on Common Ground

“But what about the bedroom?” Jonathan says. “You’re both sharing this bedroom—so who gets the final say?” In shared zones, Jonathan recommends finding some common ground. Start with a neutral or agreed-upon color scheme, and let that be the jumping off point for layering in accent pieces like pillows or window coverings within that palette. Try your best to let the process feel collaborative and get comfortable with compromise. You never know—the bedding they choose might end up being your favorite element in the room!

4. Be Open-Minded About Tastes and Styles

Conversation and working together is at the heart of creating a home you both love. Be open to the idea of changing tastes and needs, and embrace getting inspired together. “If you look at magazines and you see something that you really both like, and maybe it wasn’t either of your preference initially, understand that tastes can change,” Jonathan says. “Don’t feel so locked in on something that you have to have, because in five years you might have a different opinion anyway.”

5. Communicate Disagreements Gently

“If there’s something you know that they want, but you really, really don’t want it, have an opportunity to talk about those things together,” Jonathan says. It’s worth it to communicate calmly and gently if you disagree with a certain design choice or style—nobody wants to be criticized or mocked for their taste! Approach the conversation with love, and try to explain why you want to go in a different direction.

6. Get Creative With Pieces You Might Not Love

Jonathan distinctly recalls a chair that his father, Jim, loved in their house growing up—but Jonathan’s mother, Joanne, did not. Instead of getting rid of it, they refreshed it instead. They had a custom slipcover made for the chair that better fit the style of the room, so Jim got to keep his favorite seat and Joanne was able to customize it with a fabric she loved.

Try to find solutions like this for the pieces in your own home where you might have the same problem: re-stain the outdated console that was passed down from a loved one; repaint the catchall dish they just can’t part with; get a new cover for your favorite pillow. There’s so many ways to breathe new life into objects.

7. Get on the Same Page About Budget

This can be the hard part for a lot of couples and roommates—someone feels comfortable spending more, while the other wants to keep the budget more modest. Jonathan says he sees it frequently with a lot of his clients. But it’s important to get on the same page before you make any big decisions! Try meeting in the middle, and be honest with how much money you can really spend. There are savvy ways to save where you don’t have to sacrifice style to get the look you’re going for.

“Most items that you would purchase for a house, you could also find a more modest version of that without sacrificing the aesthetic,” Jonathan says. “So there’s a lot of real good deals you can find—replicas of even vintage pieces that you may like—so you don’t have to blow the budget.” You can find real gems at online vintage markets, secondhand antique stores, and a slurry of other furniture retailers at a great price.

8. Everyone Needs a Space That’s Their Own

Everyone deserves a little zone where they can unwind, relax, and call their own. Depending on how much space you have at home, this might look like a craft room, your home office, the garden in the backyard, or a small reading nook in the living room. It doesn’t have to be a full room or a grand study (though it can be if you have the space for it!). The most important thing is that the area feels like a comfortable place for you to recharge.

9. The Most Important Thing Is Your Relationship with One Another

“Biggest thing is, you love your partner; you love your friend; your roommate; whoever you live with—you want to make sure you have a great relationship living together. So just take the time upfront to think through the whole process, and it’ll be better for you down the road,” Jonathan says. At the end of the day, the place you live is home for you both, so it should feel like it for everyone!

When Jonathan and Zooey first toured their New York City apartment, it was anything but love at first sight. “I’ve always had the ability to walk into a space and imagine what it could be instantly,” Jonathan says. “But we had our work cut out for us with this place.” Popcorn ceilings; stark white walls; zero personality—that’s not the description you’d expect to hear for Jonathan and Zooey’s dream apartment. But through the weathered walls and crooked layout, they saw a vision of what the space could be. And it was going to have to be a full-scale renovation unlike any other.

“The most important thing for Zooey and me is that a space tells a story, and truly represents its owners,” Jonathan says. “We don’t like boring. We wanted everything from the custom furniture to the wallpaper to the lighting fixtures to feel exquisite.”

Sure, they basically had to start from scratch crafting their perfectly detailed maximalist interior from top to bottom: restructuring the layout; adding in elaborate millwork and custom plaster molding; curating a design scheme that balanced an array of texture, color, pattern, form, and sheen; and an endless laundry list of other to-dos in order to make it into the home of their dreams. But they knew they could turn this blank slate into something truly remarkable. And the challenge was half the fun.

So today, Jonathan is taking us on an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour, walking us through his style secrets and the backstory on all the work that went into renovating their remarkable New York City duplex. You can watch the full video above to get the scoop on everything you want to know, and explore more of the stories behind the design below.

Designing Over a Blank Slate

Transforming the early 1900s turn-of-the-century apartment into the ornate, maximalist family home they wanted it to be was no easy feat. Especially considering the unit itself was more like a dull 1980s office space than a beautiful Victorian or early Craftsman. Jonathan and Zooey wanted to infuse historic character back into the space and recreate the Old World charm that had been lost along the way. With soaring 15-foot ceilings and large-scale windows with natural light typically unheard of in New York City, they knew they wanted to make the home something extraordinary.

While the couple was renovating their Los Angeles home, the Park House, they wanted the 1930s Georgian revival to feel like a true bonding of their style and an homage to the original architect, Gerard Colcord. It was their first home together, and it’s a spectacular display of their taste. “LA was a real learning experience for us. It’s the first place we renovated together as a couple, and we learned a lot,” Jonathan says. But in their NYC apartment, they wanted to go bolder; be more daring in their design. Elaborate pattern mixing. Hand-drawn murals. Ornate embroidered wallpaper. “We wanted to push the boundaries of what we did in our Los Angeles home, and include even more handcrafted elements, vintage pieces, and artisanal touches,” Jonathan says.

Finding the Right Co-Designer

The Manhattan duplex is a testament to Jonathan and Zooey’s unique taste and their commitment to family—a celebration of their relationship and the special parts of it that make it their own. But to pull off a project of this scale while living on the opposite coast, they needed someone local who they could trust to manage critical components when they weren’t there. They found the perfect partner in renowned designer Young Huh. “I spoke with Young and we instantly hit it off,” Jonathan says. “Her attention to detail and her love for elegant, traditional design was exactly what we were looking for.”

Young understood their vision completely. “They wanted to incorporate a sense of history and beautiful decoration and the top request was that there be nothing modern,” she says. “Both of them love color and are fearless in exploring pattern and creativity.”

Together, Jonathan and Zooey collaborated with Young and spent nearly five years crafting their artisanal New York City pied-à-terre. But all that time and hard work was more than well worth it. “Collaborating with them was a complete joy. There was so much good creative energy flowing between us,” Young says.

It’s All In the Details

Lively patterns, romantic lighting, moody colors—every element mattered to Jonathan and Zooey. “Here, we decided that all of the fabrics would tell a story—all of the patterns and prints would really grab you when you walked in,” Jonathan says. “And so you’ll see that here—every decision and every room has something to say.”

“They have an incredibly keen eye for design and style,” Young says. “And no one, absolutely no one has Jonathan’s eagle eye for detail. He can detect if something is off an eighth of an inch with just his eye! That was pretty awe-inspiring.”

That “eagle eye” made all the difference, as each room now has its own sense of emotion and story. “When you walk into the entry you are surrounded by joy,” Young says. “The kitchen, living room, and dining room express conviviality and verve. There is a good deal of romance in the outdoor terraces, and their books, art, and decorative objects have a lot of meaning.”

But the handcrafted detail doesn’t stop at the interior. Their three private terraces each have markedly distinct designs, from the kids’ playful elephant topiary to the beautiful latticework in their French-inspired garden outside the living room. They wanted to hint to Los Angeles here, and make the exterior areas of the apartment feel just as lush as the interior.

Traditional Design, Modern Upgrades

Jonathan and Zooey knew they wanted to go with a more intricate, traditional design when it came to their style choices, but they also wanted to incorporate modern-day upgrades when it came to functional items in the house. Combining the two took some creative thinking, but they were able to work with Young to find pieces that hit everything they wanted, both stylistically and functionally.

Take the kitchen, for example. Jonathan and Zooey knew they wanted upscale and high-quality appliances from retailers like JennAir, but found a way to seamlessly blend them into the design with cabinetry. And the oven resembles an antique artisan fixture—between the patina on the copper detailing on the range and hood to the striking matte black finish—for the perfect combination of function and form.

Jacob Snavely

But it’s not just the kitchen that gets the fun and functional treatment. Their entertaining spaces also blend their family’s favorite activities with thoughtful design. There are automatic projector screens that descend from the living room ceilings for cozy movie nights without a bulky TV set disrupting the aesthetic. A custom karaoke setup is hidden in a beautiful cabinet, but remains easy to pull out at every dinner party or night in with the kids. And the standout piece is a beautiful grand piano that Zooey can record songs on for Jonathan to hear back later.

“I love Zooey’s music, and coming home to hear her playing. Having a player piano where she can record songs that I can listen to while she’s away makes that even easier,” Jonathan says. “Some of my favorite She & Him songs for her to play are ‘I Thought I Saw Your Face Today’, ‘Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?’ and ‘I Could’ve Been Your Girl’.”

There’s also plenty of sleek hidden tech that helps keep their home operating at all levels while they’re away.  “I made sure to incorporate some helpful technologies we love about our LA house into our NYC place, like smart panels and AI-driven leak detection with auto-shut off,” Jonathan says. “Going back and forth between our homes on either coast, we don’t want to be susceptible to any kind of damage while we’re gone, so I can remotely monitor everything from our security to our energy and water use. And the nice thing is it’s all hidden away, so you wouldn’t even notice the tech is there.”

Lighting Takes Effect

Jonathan, Zooey, and Young all champion the effect lighting has on a space (especially with Zooey’s father being a distinguished cinematographer). They took their time combing through antique stores, furniture markets, and lighting designers like Visual Comfort & Co. to find the perfect fixtures for the space—like the stunning Murano glass chandelier in the dining room, the floral ironwork pendant in the foyer, or the beautiful vine clad sconces in the family room.

“Lighting is incredibly important. We knew that we wanted to have some really grand statement fixtures,” he says. “But with the smaller footprint of the apartment, we wanted to ensure that it still felt balanced, and there weren’t too many fixtures clashing with one another. To prevent that, we mixed things up—so you’ll see pendants, chandeliers, and sconces all playing their part to make it a more interesting lighting design.”

Home Sweet Home

Today, Jonathan and Zooey finally have that perfect home base that’s as unique and exciting as the city itself. They put their all into turning the apartment into a place that felt like them: bold, colorful, romantic, and interesting.

“We don’t like a boring, modern space,” Jonathan says. “I love it when somebody says to me, ‘I have never seen something like that before.’ That is music to my ears.”

Achieving the vision they originally set out for was not easy—but through patience, planning, and creativity, they were able to curate a metropolitan haven unlike any other.

Bonus: Maximalist Design Tips from Young

Maximalist design can be so rewarding—but making a variety of colors, patterns, and finishes all marry together to look intentional and curated can feel like a tall order, especially if you don’t know where to begin. “Start by picking your favorite colors, fabrics, and finishes, and put them together on a table,” Young says. “Do they all look good together and do they make you feel excited? Try to imagine how those items will look in the room.”

Creating mood boards and comparing fabric samples, wallpaper squares, and paint chips are all great ways to get the creative juices flowing—but ultimately, curating a maximalist design in your own home comes down to creating a space that feels authentically you. There’s no formula for your unique personality, so go with what makes your space feel like yours. “You just have to love all the things you choose together,” Young says.
