You may know him for his iconic characters in Sex and the City, Dune, Twin Peaks, and Fallout—but Kyle MacLachlan’s role is all kilts and sledgehammers on this episode of Celebrity IOU. This week, he’s joining forces with Drew and Jonathan to bring someone special the surprise of a lifetime. Together, they’re turning Kyle’s close family friend’s garage into a beautiful, functional flex space the whole family can use—and embracing their shared Scottish roots along the way.

Mary Therese (MT) was a nanny to Kyle’s son Callum for nearly 15 years, and now she’s part of the family. MT’s mom, Arlene, lives in Wisconsin, and there’s a chance that she’ll need to move in with MT, Joe, and their daughter Maddy soon. Right now, though, they don’t have the extra space to give her a bedroom. So Kyle wants to help and surprise MT with a beautiful flex space that can do it all—be an additional living area to relax and unwind as a family, act as a guest room for Arlene, pull triple duty as a laundry room—and still be able to function as a garage (since it’ll be a flex space, not an ADU, as per permitting orders).

MT, Joe, and Maddy are out of town visiting family in Wisconsin, and while they’re away, Kyle’s decided to totally renovate the space top-to-bottom. She and her family mean so much to Kyle, his wife Desiree, and Callum, and he hopes this gesture shows her just how much she’s loved. “MT came into our lives and immediately transformed everything,” Kyle says. “When you have kids, you want to surround them with the best possible people—mentors, people to look up to, people to aspire to be—and she’s been a life-changer for our family.”

Comfortable Living

MT loves the modern farmhouse look, and adding touches of reclaimed wood, as we see here in the coffee table, provide that rustic touch. Cozy seating and a plush area rug make the space feel comfortable and inviting for everyone.

Custom cabinetry behind the sofa conceals a fridge and kitchenette, with plenty of storage and even a hidden laundry folding station. The carriage doors are a serious upgrade from the old garage door, too! It’s a far more sleek, elegant option that creates a style statement both inside and outside.

Multifaceted Spaces

The flex space Kyle, Drew, and Jonathan created has a bounty of opportunity: It’s a beautiful rec room for MT, Joe, and Maddy; a great chill zone for family parties or sleepovers; a functional space for storage (especially with the addition of the attic space) and laundry; and can easily turn into a gorgeous guest suite when Arlene needs it. 

Luxe Additions

They went with a luxury vinyl flooring to stay in ordinance with city permit requirements for flex garage spaces (you have to use a floor type that you’ll be able to drive your car onto). But can you believe how beautiful this looks?! This chic floor makes the space feel less like a flex room and more like a permanent part of the home.

They also decided to give the entertainment zone a luxurious touch by incorporating a magic TV. With the press of a button, the TV will automatically lower itself out of sight behind the cabinetry. That way, they can enjoy TV time when they want it, and let the natural light in when they don’t.

She can make you laugh so hard you cry, but on this episode of Celebrity IOU, Sarah Silverman is putting down the joke book and picking up the sledgehammer. Sarah’s joining forces with Drew and Jonathan to gift her friend Amy with the incredible kitchen reno she’s always wanted. One of the closest people in her life for the past 25 years, Amy has been there through thick and thin, and Sarah wants to show her how much she means to her. Amy’s been dreaming of upgrading her kitchen for years now, so while she’s out of town, Sarah and the Bros are going to work on making that dream a reality.

To say Amy has been a huge part of Sarah’s life would be an understatement. “Amy’s not just my manager, she’s my emergency contact,” Sarah says. Through loss and change, life’s highest highs, and lowest lows, Amy and Sarah have been side by side through it all. “We’ve really become—in Jewish we say ‘mishpachah’—you know, it’s like family, but it’s the family you make.”

At first glance, stepping into the kitchen, it generally looks fine—but when you get up close, you start to see the quality of the space falling apart at the seams. The appliances that came with the house barely work, the floors are beat up, and the builder-grade finishes are on their last leg. It’s also a bit dark and dreary, which isn’t Amy’s style. “She wanted to update it, but she kind of put everything into buying it,” Sarah says.

Luckily, Drew, Jonathan, and Sarah have a plan to create that relaxing space so Amy can feel comfortable and happy in her kitchen—working, entertaining, cooking, sharing her favorite wines with friends, and finally enjoying it.

“She bought this townhouse—it’s beautiful—but it’s a little bit the bane of her existence,” says Sarah. “She’s been dreaming of doing renovations for a while, so I’m hoping that this is a really great surprise.”

Sophisticated Design Choices

The herringbone pattern on the wood floor is a seemingly small detail that makes a huge impact on the overall design. It adds that touch of sophisticated style in a subtle, thoughtful way.

Taking the cabinetry all the way up to the ceiling is also a simple way to elevate the space. It makes the ceilings appear taller visually, and gives the kitchen a designer look that the prior builder-grade cabinetry was lacking.

Upgraded Paneled Appliances

Of course, making the space brighter and lighter was something that was very important to Sarah. Amy loves the look of that natural, mid-century modern aesthetic, and Sarah and the Bros wanted to make sure to incorporate those elements. The light-toned wood was a fabulous way to do this, and the upgraded paneled appliances take the design to the next level.

Dreamy Mid-Century Dining

The bold, black dining table is the star of the show in this room, making a visual impact that still feels cohesive with the design style. The hidden dry bar behind the wood door is a subtle, chic way to keep Amy’s bar gear handy without creating visual clutter.

He’s been nominated for an Academy Award and multiple Golden Globes; he’s won a Latin Grammy and a plethora of film festival awards; and played more iconic roles than we can even name! But friends and family know Andy Garcia even more for his caring heart. And on this episode of Celebrity IOU he proves that as he gifts his cherished late friend Julio’s family with a beautiful new entertainment space to enjoy.

Julio was Andy’s best friend—they met in Miami Beach during their first year of college taking an acting class together. “He’s as great an actor as I’ve ever worked with,” says Andy, “And I’ve worked with some great actors.” But a bit more than a year ago, Julio had suddenly and devastatingly passed away.

With their shared passion for acting, they were both either reading or writing something new, and bouncing ideas off each other all the time. They were like brothers, always together, and always looking out for one another. “I always wanted him to be by my side, you know?” Andy says. “And those memories, I cherish.”

Julio’s wife, Linda, and their children, JJ, CJ, and Melinda have always loved using the backyard. They play dominoes and darts, cook great meals, host parties, and share plenty of laughs together. But Andy has an idea to give the backyard a major upgrade. He’s turning their detached garage into a cozy living space where they can watch movies, relax as a family, and have a dedicated spot for hosting game nights—and honoring Julio’s loving, energetic spirit throughout it all.

Teary eyed, Linda says, “I’m just thinking of Julio, my husband, how much he would appreciate this.”

Upgrading the Patio

Isn’t this just incredible?! Linda’s new backyard patio is now fully equipped with its own kitchen where she can cook all her best dishes for loved ones and guests, as well as an outdoor dining table and lounge furniture to create that cozy, welcoming vibe. They even included a pizza oven, since that’s one of Linda’s favorite meals to cook!

Letting the Light In

To double the space so it still accommodates their storage needs, Andy, Drew, and Jonathan created an attic-like structure in the ceiling, with a pull-down door for easy access and a more organized feel.

The addition of the French doors here completely transformed the space, too—now, the room is filled with natural light, and there is convenient access to the outdoor patio. On days where it’s beautiful out, they can simply leave the doors open for an indoor-outdoor vibe.

The Ultimate Chill Zone

Inside the garage, we find the ultimate entertainment zone, equipped with full surround sound, an 85-inch TV screen, and a soundbar below, as well as plenty of comfortable seating. It’s the perfect setting for game nights and movie marathons.

Andy also had the great idea of including a sleeper sofa, for that added benefit of a guest space if they ever had someone in town who wanted to crash for a couple nights.

Beautiful New Modern Garage Doors

Andy, Drew, and Jonathan swapped the old aluminum garage door with a beautiful solid wood accordion option that perfectly complements the new design. These carriage-style doors offer plenty of function, which allows Linda and her kids to choose the best fit for their needs at any moment. 

“The one thing I want in my life is for him to come back,” Andy says. “That’s the nature of anything when you lose someone who’s dear to you. And he’d be happy about this—he’d want to be here.”

As a household name and actor of 47 years, Rob Lowe is no stranger to the spotlight—but on this new episode of Celebrity IOU, it’s all eyes on his wonderful friend, Carol. She’s been like family to Rob, his wife Sheryl Berkoff, and their two sons, Matthew and John Owen, and she’s an important part of all of their lives. Now, Rob wants to give her a gift she’s been dreaming of for years: A first-floor redesign that will embrace her and her wife Karen’s gorgeous design style.

“Carol started out as my assistant, then became house manager, and now is just like, the family member,” Rob says. “She’s done every iteration of job for us, but the main thing is her heart and devotion.”

Carol and her partner Karen absolutely love their house and their life together, and they adore entertaining friends and family. And though their house is beautiful, Carol says the only thing they haven’t done yet is the kitchen—and she’s so excited to have Drew and Jonathan’s help reimagining it.

The outdated orange oak cabinets were bandage-fixed, but they were falling off the hinges and weren’t very functional in terms of depth and size. The kitchen itself also felt very secluded from the rest of their welcoming, airy space—so Rob wanted to make the first floor feel more cohesive and cozy for them.

“She’s the emotional glue in our life,” Rob says. And because she’s always been there for Rob and his family, he wants to be there for her now to show her how much she’s loved.

Open and Bright

One of the things Carol and Karen disliked most about their kitchen was how dark and unwelcoming it felt. Rob and the Bros decided to brighten things up, bringing in light wide-plank engineered hardwood flooring throughout the entire first floor, and lighter coloring on the walls and cabinetry.

Room With a View

To further help Carol’s kitchen feel open and airy, they wanted to enhance the natural light. They nearly tripled the size of her once tiny window above the sink, which did wonders to brighten the room. Now, Carol and Karen also have a pass-through serving window with a bar on the backyard side to entertain guests with food and drinks.

Cooking in Style

White oak cabinetry fills the space and gives the room that sleek, sophisticated look that Carol and Karen love so much. Slabs of beautiful, creamy porcelain line the countertops and are brought all the way up through the backsplash. Not only does this improve the overall design, but it also reflects light and opens up the space.

Updated, Upscale Dining Area

To free up valuable space in the dining room, Rob, Drew, and Jonathan replaced the previous swing door with a sliding door. They created a custom built-in banquet, which contrasted beautifully with the stunning black dining table and cushioned black chairs.

Cozy & Comfy Seating for All

Finally, in the living room, the Bros and Rob replaced Carol and Karen’s furniture with plenty of cozy, comfy seating, so everyone they host will have a soft place to relax and watch the game or stream their current favorite TV show. Because that light flooring was taken all the way through the first floor, the whole space looks more cohesive, and helps connect all three rooms visually.

We all know him for his hilarious antics as an actor in Scrubs and his filmmaking talent in Garden State—but now, Zach Braff is making an appearance on Celebrity IOU! He’s enlisting the help of Drew and Jonathan to gift his longtime friend Mark a stunning home renovation that he well deserves. After buying his home, Mark realized how much work was needed in order to get the house up to his family’s standards.

Between structural issues, outdated flooring, and awkward layouts, the first floor definitely needed some work. Luckily, Drew and Jonathan were there to help Zach make it happen. Zach actually renovated his own home over the course of two years, so he was excited to work on Mark’s home with the Brothers’ help. They wanted to lean into the home’s original Spanish-style character by including rounded archways and dark oak wood, as well as plenty of art and plush fabrics to make the space feel welcoming. The result was a beautiful surprise for Mark, his wife, and their two daughters.

Open and Modern Dual-Purpose Room

This blank-slate room was completely transformed into a vibrant and lively living space. Engineered hardwood oak was installed in a creative herringbone pattern, which adds an unexpected artistic element. Modern finishes and comfortable fabrics make the living and dining area feel cozy and welcoming.

Space-Saving Banquette Dining Table

A plush and space-saving corner banquette allows the family dining table feel stylish and inviting while still accommodating the dual-purpose room layout. In the corner on the opposite wall, a hidden bookcase door conceals a stackable washer and dryer for a personal touch that Zach requested.

Cool and Contrasting Kitchen

Begone, Pacman-style kitchen layout and hello, functionality! Mark and his family definitely needed better storage space, so the Bros and Zach delivered. Dark oak lower cabinets contrast the soft white-colored upper cabinets in a complementary fashion that looks sleek and modern. A custom island leaves enough space for Mark’s kids to sit and do homework at without compromising the kitchen’s square footage.

Academy Award and Golden Globe-winning actress Mira Sorvino is back on our screens, but this time, it’s to join Drew and Jonathan on Celebrity IOU! She wants to surprise Astrid—who’s like a sister to her—with a new main floor, including an improved kitchen, dining room, and living room. After the pipes burst in their kitchen, the main floor completely flooded. Astrid and her husband Alfred were devastated. The couple loves their home, and they were beside themselves when they realized they didn’t have the resources to fix the plumbing issue right away. They’ve been living with their adult children since then.

Mira wants to help get them back in their home and solve these problems so they’re safe. “Astrid is the kindest person you’re ever going to meet,” says Mira. For the past 16 years, Astrid has been very close to Mira and her family. She helped look after Mira’s children when they were babies, and Mira says Astrid became an older sister to her. “She’s helped me out through some really hard times. My father died recently, and she was there for me…To me, she’s the family I have in California,” Mira says.

Likewise, Mira has been Astrid’s rock throughout some tough times in her life. That’s why Mira wants to turn the home into a haven for Astrid and Alfred. “They’ve gone through a lot, and it’s time for something good to happen for Astrid,” Mira says.

Jennifer Jason Leigh has played many different characters on the big screen, but this week she’s coming over to Celebrity IOU to gift someone very special with a life-changing home reno. Jennifer’s mother hired Nori as a housekeeper while Jennifer was just in high school, but Nori has stayed a pillar in their lives ever since. She cared and cooked meals for Jennifer’s mother through hospice, and she and Jennifer have raised their families together.

Nori has seen three generations of Jennifer’s family grow, and she’s played a critical role in all of them. Likewise, so has Jennifer in Nori’s family. When Nori’s son Joshua was born, they were told he had just two days to live—but those two days turned into 26 beautiful years of life. Ever since Joshua passed away a few years ago, Jennifer’s been there to help her through that deep grief.

Nori takes such great pride in her home, and so many renovations done throughout the years were for Joshua’s needs. Jennifer wants to gift her with a renovation that will honor Joshua and their family while also prioritizing Nori’s needs and wants as she enters retirement. Jennifer says Nori has always been one to refuse gifts and favors. But Jennifer wants to show her how much she matters to her, and with Nori out of the house, she won’t be able to say no to this one-of-a-kind gift! “I’ve always wanted to give her the moon, and now I get to give her something that she can’t return,” jokes Jennifer.

Jennifer and Nori have been by each other’s side for over 40 years. Smarter TV Space

Drew and Jonathan made use of the blank wall space here and installed built-ins to help give the wall some personality and function. Now, Nori has room to organize all her family games and memorabilia, with discreet closed storage underneath for cords and wires.

The Perfect Conversation Setup

Before, the living room was missing something. With such a large space, it’s easy for the room to feel incomplete without the right furniture. The Bros recommended carving out the center of it with more seating to better round out the area, and it instantly made the space feel cozier and more intimate.

Expanding the Area

The Bros expanded the unused back area to make a second seating and lounge zone. They made a couple comfortable chairs the focal point, and hung artwork to grab your eye from across the room. Creating a second vignette in the space makes the room look and feel more dynamic.

Widening the Window

Jennifer, Drew, and Jonathan widened the kitchen window to allow more light in the kitchen, and wow—it made all the difference! The natural light fills the space and makes the kitchen feel more open and airy. They moved the sink in front of the window so Nori could have a nice view of her garden while doing dishes or washing her vegetables.

Organized and Chic

By rearranging the layout of the kitchen cabinets and better utilizing the top and bottom cupboards for storage, Nori now has a more functional cooking space. The room wasn’t drastically rearranged, but the intuitive redesign made a huge impact!

This episode of Celebrity IOU featured our favorite skateboarder, Tony Hawk, on a gnarly journey to gift his longtime friend and videographer with the mid-century modern editing studio of his dreams. Tim and Tony been working together for almost 10 years now (Tim films Tony’s skating videos) and throughout the past decade, they’ve grown incredibly close. Tim’s creativity and his way of making others around him feel inspired and confident is infectious, and Tony wants him to feel that in his home space, too.

A couple of years ago, Tony broke his femur, and suffered a pretty bad recovery. He went through a lot of pain—physically, mentally, emotionally—and Tim was there with him through it. “He helped me to realize that I had a long way to go, and to accept the process,” Tony says. Tim documented the entire course of Tony’s injury and recovery, which he says has became a really important piece of his story as a pro skater.

Tim worked hard to buy the home he has now in California, and Tony knows how much he’s been craving a private space to turn into his editing studio. He has a detached garage that isn’t used much, and he’s been dreaming of turning it into his studio ever since he moved in. So the Bros and Tony came in to help transform it into a studio perfectly set up for him, where he can feel focused and inspired.

“I was with Tim when he bought his house, actually, and I know how much he was saving and how much he risked to get it… I felt for him. And I was hoping maybe I could do something to help out,” Tony says. Tim’s been there with him a lot over the years, and has pushed him creatively, and Tony wants to repay him for everything he’s done for him.

“The fact that Tony even thought of me in the first place? It boggles my mind… He’s only done good for me, and I want to return the favor to him. Now I owe him again? We’re never going to be even if he keeps doing stuff like this,” Tim jokes.

Sleek and Contemporary Facade

There was some rot and soft spots on the roof, and overall, the structure wasn’t suitable for a living space. Outside, they replaced the rotten edges of the roof and closed the soffits to protect from the elements. Inside, they laid new concrete as the foundation for new wood flooring, and replaced the framing to bring the space up to code. An insulated roof helps regulate the heat inside and create a great space for Tim to use as an editing studio for years to come.

A Modern Wooden Mural

Before, the garage was dark and damp, and really unusable. Drew, Jonathan, and Tony wanted to change all that and more. With this area of the room, they decided to include a custom curved desk that perfectly fits all of Tim’s editing materials, a hideaway workbench for repairing skateboards, a TV to display video edits in large-scale, and plenty of lighting. Jonathan and Tony decided to get creative with a sleek wood panel wall and use contrasting tones to create a cool nod to a skateboarding quarter-pipe.

Shredding the Gnar On Comfort

The Bros and Tony decided to turn the main area into a lounging space. This way, people can come in and have a comfortable place to sit while they look through edits.

They swapped the old track garage door for carriage-style doors to make the space feel more professional and comfortable. Deciding on doors that still had windows on top allowed that natural light to come in and keep the room bright and airy.

Elevated Design With Simple Materials

The Bros and Tony used acoustic board on the back wall and ceiling to sound-proof the space, which also helped create that sleek, mid-century modern look that they were going for. They displayed some of Tim’s favorite boards on the wall above the sofa, too, to showcase his work. Adding plenty of modern lighting, the space no longer feels cold and dark. Now, Tim’s studio is bright, warm, and inviting.

He may play a tough guy in movies, but Danny Trejo has a heart of gold, and we see it come through tenfold in this Celebrity IOU episode. Through good times and bad, he and his ex Maeve have helped each other no matter what. And even after separating, they’re still each other’s best friend.

Danny was a single father to his son, Danny Boy, for a few years until he met Maeve. And soon after, the two became inseparable. Maeve helped raise Danny Boy, and they created a beautiful family dynamic. Maeve and Danny went on to have two children together, Gilbert and Danielle. After they broke up, Maeve had two more sons, Sam and Theo, who were both diagnosed with autism. Danny saw how Maeve gave so much to the community and advocated for autism education, and encouraged Maeve to go to law school—all expenses paid.

“She’s always been helping people, and the way she took care of Danny Boy, her wanting to make a difference… It’s like, you want good, you do good; you want good, you help people—and good things come to pass,” he says.

Maeve and Danny’s beautiful blended family is a very important part of their lives. That’s why Danny wanted to transform the detached garage into an autism-friendly space for Theo and Sam, and a relaxing spot for Maeve.

“Whether they’re related to me or not doesn’t matter,” Danny says.

“We absolutely know that we’re family,” Maeve says. “We’ve always known that love is there, no matter what.”

To create a special place specifically for Maeve, Drew, Jonathan, and Danny wanted to create a relaxing outdoor space for her to entertain or chill in the yard. They added french doors which open up right onto a flagstone patio, with plush seating for her and her guests and a modern fire table.

Floor-to-Ceiling Paneling

Originally, the garage was used as Maeve’s office, and then at another point, Danielle’s bedroom. It was always an extension of the house. But it’s been left as a catchall space for a while since then, and they’ve run into some issues with walls rotting and  intrusive bamboo growing through the baseboards.

Drew, Jonathan, and Danny uprooted the bamboo, fixed the rotted wood, and completely replaced the walls, ceiling, and flooring with warm-toned wood paneling to help the room feel cozier. They also included sound-dampening curtains and panels to help create a soothing space that better accommodates Theo’s misophonia.

A Serene Place to Chill

The neutral, earth-toned color palette they decided on wasn’t chosen just because it’s beautiful—but also because it’s calming. A grounded, serene color scheme will help Sam and Theo feel more relaxed in the space, while the architectural wood slat ceiling dampens sound and also helps visually separate the four different activity zones that they’ve created.

Packing a Punch

Sam can’t go to a regular gym because it can become very overwhelming for him. So Danny wanted to incorporate some at-home gym equipment for him to have a space to work out in comfort. They included a punching bag, a full rack of free weights, and an exercise bike, as well as a ballet barre for Maeve.

Wanda Sykes is an icon in comedy, from her early days writing for The Chris Rock Show to now having her own specials, movies, and standups, she’s always making the world laugh. But this week on Celebrity IOU, Wanda Sykes wants to give back and help her chosen niece Amber by renovating her family’s home to make it more comfortable, functional, and organized.

“Amber and her whole family took care of me—especially at times where I needed a family,” says Wanda.

Wanda met Amber’s mother, Alyson, back in the late 90s. They were both working as writers for a late night show and immediately hit it off. Since then, they’ve seen each other through many of life’s biggest moments. Amber became a pillar in Wanda’s life, and Wanda a pillar in Amber’s.

“Wanda feels like a family that I was gifted,” Amber says. When Wanda married her wife, it gave Amber the courage to talk to her grandmother about falling in love with her now wife Brianna. She felt like she could finally be herself and have her own wife and children, just like Wanda did.

Amber, Brianna, and their two daughters moved into Amber’s grandmother’s home after her passing. They’ve loved raising their family there, but their layout is very dysfunctional, and it limits the way they interact. If their 1-year-old wakes up at night, Brianna and Amber have to go around the whole house in order to get to her. Between this and the leaking roof, it’s been very difficult to feel comfortable. That’s why Wanda is gifting them with a major remodel.

A Safe and Secure Bedroom Oasis

After finding mold behind the walls of the primary bedroom, Wanda, Drew, and Jonathan realized they were doing much more than just making Amber’s home more functional and beautiful—they were also making it safer.

Thoughtful Bedroom Touches

The Bros and Wanda decided on special features, such as designing Amber and Brianna’s bedroom flooring in a herringbone pattern, to bring the space to life. They rearranged the layout to better accommodate the room’s natural flow, and included cozy pieces throughout.

A Pampered Bathroom

Amber has been dreaming of a big standalone soaking tub, and now she has her very own! Its striking contrast against the walk-in shower’s light-toned marble floors and porcelain walls makes the whole room feel more upscale. They also included a double vanity and plenty of storage for linens and bathroom products.

Celina (who they call Cece) has such a big heart and has given so much to everyone around her, and Mandy wants to show her how grateful she is to have her by her side. Celina’s backyard is a special gathering place for her and her loved ones. It’s where they eat family meals, share stories, host parties, play music, and make new memories. But her space didn’t feel like her, and Cece had been wanting to renovate it for a while. There weren’t many seating options, the outdoor refrigerator didn’t work, and she really wanted an outdoor kitchen for the big meals she cooks for family. So, Drew, Jonathan, and Mandy got to work gifting Cece with the outdoor space she’s always wanted.

This gorgeous outdoor fire table is nestled between two seating areas, separating the kitchen and dining space from the lounging spots. The backyard kitchen now has everything Celina needs to cook for her family and host her famous dinner parties.

A New Space to Chill

This luxe lounge is the perfect place for family and friends to cozy up all season long. (Even on chilly nights for s’mores!) The plush outdoor sofa and chairs make for a comfortable place to unwind and relax, and they even added a TV and media space for any outdoor movie nights or big games they want to watch together.

The outdoor kitchen includes a chic setup that has all the bells and whistles Celina needs to cook for family and friends. It includes a large six-burner grill, sturdy dolomite countertops, a convenient fridge, as well as all the cookware fixings.
