Actress, director, producer, and talk show host Drew Barrymore wanted to give Deb, her best friend and makeup artist of twenty years, a life-changing renovation. Both are single moms who have been there for each other during the highs and lows of their lives. For a long time, Deb has wanted her home to be a place where her son could bring friends over, but her divorce made it hard for her to maintain the necessary upkeep.

Design Highlights

Storage Galore

Storage is a must in any kitchen. We added more here by relocating the patio doors and wrapping the room’s perimeter with modern, wood-tone cabinets. The new kitchen island also works as additional prep space and a nice spot to have breakfast and hang out with Deb’s son, Mikey.

Light Dining

Deb loves a sunny space, and the new oak-tone hardwood floors will keep the kitchen bright and airy, just like she wants. This luxurious setup also sets a great backdrop for when she hosts dinner parties.

Out and About

Deb’s favorite place is her deck, so we expanded it to over twice its original size to make room for additional dining and seating options. Now she can savor the beautiful view whenever she wants and invite guests to enjoy it with her. (And Mikey can, too!)

Wilmer Valderrama Surprises His Best Friend

Actor, producer, entrepreneur, and activist Wilmer Valderrama wanted to give back to Tadao, his best friend of more than 20 years. Wilmer says Tadao has been like an older brother and guardian angel throughout his life and career. Over the last few years, Tadao has lost several loved ones due to illness, but his home remains a hub for his large Samoan family.

Design Highlights

Surprises Around Every Corner

Everyone loves a surprise and in the new living room we were able to install not one, not two, but three pop up features. The TV rises and lowers into the stand at the press of a button, and Tadao can pull out a Murphy bed on either side of the media center, ensuring everyone who visits will be comfortable.

Food and Family

A kitchenette was a must so that guests wouldn’t have to run back into the house if they wanted a snack. We also added family photos and grass cloth wallpaper to give this corner a warm, cozy vibe.

A Samoan Sunrise

Tadao is very proud of his Samoan heritage, so we wanted to weave in some Polynesian influences into the bathroom’s design. For the shower tile, we picked a warm, orange pattern that evokes an island sunrise.

Cheryl Hines Gifts a Garage Makeover

Actress, producer and director Cheryl Hines wanted to thank her former assistant and nanny, Sarita, by gifting her a life-changing home renovation. Cheryl and Sarita have known each other for 20 years and, although Sarita started as Cheryl’s assistant, she turned into a close friend as well as a nanny for her daughter Katherine. As a wife and mom of two, Sarita needed a better work-from-home environment and space to host guests.

Design Highlights

A Staycation in Your Backyard

Since Sarita works from home, it was important to give her an area where she could work without getting distracted by her kids or other household chores. Plus, when her parents visit, she can pull down a Murphy bed and transform the space into a guest room.

Drama and Flair

When it came to designing the bathroom, Cheryl knew exactly what Sarita would want wanted. From the patterned tile to the star-shaped light fixture, each feature adds a splash of drama to the room while remaining modern and functional.

Get Out and Get Together

Sarita loves the outdoors, and because there wouldn’t be much need for a driveway without a garage anymore, we decided to set up a nice lounging space outside. With comfy seating, a warm firepit, and gorgeous landscaping, the entire family can gather around and roast s’mores whenever they want.

Cindy and Sarah are more like sisters who have supported each other through the good and bad. One of the most difficult times was when Sarah’s husband, Rick, was first diagnosed with cancer. With most of their savings going towards his medical bills, they’ve only now been able to buy their first house.

Design Highlights

Arched and Elegant

The house’s entryway was already an impressive feature, and we wanted to make sure that “wow” factor carried into the living room. While we came up with the idea to run beautiful hardwood throughout the entire space, it was Cindy who brilliantly decided we should incorporate arches into the room’s design.

Come On In

Sarah’s preferred style is contemporary and modern, yet warm and inviting. So, when renovating the kitchen, we focused on making sure it not only had state-of-the art appliances but features such as the kitchen island/dining table combo that offers plenty of room for guests.

Convenient Design

Sarah and Rick host weekly sobriety meetings for their local recovery group, and a personal dream of hers has been to have a guest bathroom away from the family’s personal one. We used some of the kitchen’s dead space to add a sleek and stylish powder room for visitors.

Morning Retreat

Melissa has always dreamed of having an outdoor deck attached to her bedroom. We extended her patio across the entire back of the house and replaced her bedroom window with beautiful French doors. Every morning she can now wake up, step outside, and enjoy the view.

Making a Masterpiece

The shed was a special place for Melissa to escape and paint. While it was already cozy, we freshened it up by installing some luxury vinyl and giving it a fresh coat of paint so that it would feel more like a private, personal art studio.

Gardens and Games

Melissa’s other passion is gardening, so bringing in raised beds that would be easier on her ankles was our next step. However, once Kate told us about the Bocce court that used to be here, we decided we also needed to bring that back and turn the space into one she can appreciate, whether alone or with the entire family.

Get Moving

Exercising is easier when you have a gym right in your backyard. Different workout stations span the entire length of his yard, each shaded by a gorgeous pergola so that Frank can get moving no matter how intense the California sun gets.

Lounging with the Fishes

Frank’s koi pond was a great feature we wanted to highlight. We added additional outdoor seating nearby and a firepit so that the family can gather late at night and watch both the stars and the swimmers.

California Cooking

Since Frank loves the outdoors so much, we wanted to give him all the creature comforts usually reserved for the indoors. The stainless-steel grill comes equipped with other built-in appliances, like a mini fridge and sink, making it easy and efficient for Frank to cook almost any meal.

Performer, singer, songwriter, entrepreneur, and author Idina Menzel wanted to show her gratitude to her close friend James. He runs an acclaimed youth basketball program in Los Angeles that teaches kids, including her son, both game and life skills. James grew up in the Lower East Side of New York City and began playing competitive basketball at a young age. After losing both parents in a short span, he immersed himself in growing his program to help kids learn the sport and dream big.

James wished to build a permanent training facility at his new home where his students would have a safe place to hang out and practice. So Idina teamed up with us to gift James a space to review films, meet with his players, and simply relax. Grab Yourself a Bite

It was important to Idina that James had a space where he could both work with his kids and relax by himself. So, we included a sleek kitchenette with an induction cooktop. Whether he needs to feed a whole team or make a little snack, he can quickly grab necessary cookware in seconds.

Marvelous Marble

Our next step was to install an additional bathroom for his players. Not only will this be more convenient, but the gorgeous black marble and brass accents make the design a slam dunk.

Inspired Living

Last but certainly not least, there needed to be a hangout spot. While the comfy living room furniture and 60-inch TV are great features, the star of the space is the basketball-inspired mural that spans two walls. Striking and monochromatic, it perfectly captures James and his vision for his players.

Leslie Jordan’s Life-Changing Renovation

Our late friend Leslie Jordan—actor, The New York Times best-selling author, recording artist, and one of the kindest, most joyful people we had the pleasure to know—wanted to give back to Newell and Rosemary.

They were his best friends of 40 years who helped jump-start his career. They eventually became more like family, as they always supported him, especially through some hard personal struggles.

Although he admitted to having no construction experience, Leslie was ready to swing sledgehammers alongside us so he could thank Newell and Rosemary with a striking renovation of their charming but dated ranch-style home. Together, we created an open flow in the living area, added a wood feature accent wall in the dining room, and built a kitchen that reflects their Southwestern style with earth-toned cabinets and an adobe-style vent hood.

Beautiful From Every Angle

Rosemary and Newell loved their fireplace but wanted more space to host their large extended family. So, we knocked down the walls around it to combine the living room with the den, while still keeping the fireplace as a stunning feature.

A Place to Gather

Before, the dining room was somewhat of an afterthought. We installed a stunning feature wall that showcases Rosemary and Newell’s Southwest style, giving the guests a great backdrop to enjoy when they come together to feast on Rosemary’s famous cornbread.

More Light, More Room

Thanks to the added light from the now-open living room, we were able to take out a window in the kitchen to extend the range and add more cabinet storage. Plus, we replaced its dated tiling with new hardwood that unifies the kitchen with the rest of the house.

Halle said Yvonne was a guide and a bright light during some very difficult times in her youth and helped shape who she is today. With our help, Halle executed a stunning kitchen, dining room, and sitting room renovation for Yvonne’s 1920 Cleveland, Ohio, home.

GATHER ‘ROUND THE TABLE

Even since Halle was a little girl, Yvonne’s kitchen has acted as a hub for family, friends, and students to gather around. So, to make her renewed “cookie talks” easier, we installed a peninsula with an attached wooden tabletop, so that her new prep space could double as an office space as well.

FLOOR FUNCTION

Years of kids running around had worn Yvonne’s old dining room carpet down to the bones. However, once we restored the original hardwood floor below, all it took was a fresh coat of paint and a chic dining set to breathe new life into the space.

PICTURE PERFECT

Some of Yvonne’s most cherished possessions are the letters she’s received from former students. So, when we revamped the study, we made sure that the new built-in shelves not only included plenty of space to display pictures of loved ones but also custom drawers to store the letters in.

GALLERY GLAMOUR

Derrick had kept his family artwork nailed to the wall—literally, with no frame—and we all agreed it needed a better and more deserving home. So, we dedicated an entire gallery wall to showcase not only the beautiful profile—now framed, but with its rough edges still showing—but also Anthony and Derrick’s beautiful family.

BANQUETTE BRILLIANCE

The family’s kitchen was extremely dated, not to mentioned damaged, with a broken windowpane from an errant toss. We completely overhauled the entire layout, adding in this combination island/banquette that features a table perfect for a lovely dinner, or a lively game night.

OUTSTANDING OUTDOORS

Derrick’s busy life as a first responder kept him from doing even the basics to his home, which needed a lot of care on the outside. We replaced the roof, front door and landscaping to give him the curb appeal he deserved to come home to after a long day saving lives.

Actor, comedian, screenwriter, musician, and producer John C. Reilly gave his driver and close friend of many years, Johnny, a very special renovation. Johnny and his wife are long-time foster parents. Working alongside us, John helped overhaul a log-style cabin in Johnny’s backyard into a stunning new space and completely refreshed his large backyard.

LOG-COVERED LUXURY

Johnny’s cabin was originally built in the 1920s, and he loved that rustic feel. So, we matched the original log veneer with new stylishly painted paneling. To complete the new look, we even got the original painter to create an updated sign for Johnny’s business.

LOUNGING IN STYLE

Before, the main function of the cabin was to store all the vintage clothing Johnny’s wife likes to collect. We took that empty space and turned it into a lounge where they can invite guests to hang out and relax, complete with a retro kitchenette and peninsula.

BATHROOM BLISS

Nothing kills a party like having to rush back to another building when you need a restroom break. So, after installing in some plumbing, we were able to add in a luxurious, spacious bathroom that completed the cabin’s vintage look with its gold-accented styling.

Actress, comedian, writer, and producer Lisa Kudrow gave back to Thea, her second cousin and best friend, with a stunning home renovation. Thea rescues and adopts sick and abused animals and lost both of her parents in recent years. Since Thea hadn’t had time to focus on making improvements to her outdated condo, Lisa joined us to surprise her with a beautiful renovation to the living room, dining room, and outdoor deck to provide function and comfort for both her and her animals.

LIVING IN STYLE

Thea loves collecting vintage clothing, so we decided to add a closet, complete with engraved, decorative doors, to her living room. Then we updated her fireplace by giving it a mantle and a sleek plaster finish.

CONNECT FLOORS

Before, Thea’s living room was constrained by an awkward half-wall cutting between it and the kitchen. Once we took that down, the space really opened up and felt more welcoming. Plus, the new vinyl flooring is both stylish and tough enough to handle five pets.

DECKED OUT DECADENCE

We took the dead space that was Thea’s outdoor deck and turned it into a place all of Thea’s loved ones could enjoy. A canopy-bench provides shade and seating for guests while furry friends can enjoy the grassy pet run.
