Family with children and two men on swings smiling together in a backyard playset Family with children and two men on swings smiling together in a backyard playset

Shaly and Leonel moved to Las Vegas ten years ago to open their own insurance agency but were never quite convinced they’d be there forever. Two kids, three business offices, and multiple rentals later, they’re finally ready to admit they’re sticking around and are eager to put down roots. After years of living in boring, beige apartments, the Miami natives were ready to find their dream home—something unique that reflects their personalities, and with a lot of green space for their young children (and to remind them of the lush landscapes of Florida). Additionally, they wanted a single story with open site lines, as well as a dedicated office area since the couple often works from home. Finding a house within their budget was a challenge, but we found a place that, after a lot of demolition work, fit the bill perfectly.

THE SISTERS

The original kitchen was smack-dab in the center of the home. Its awful placement blocked sunlight and sight lines. We moved it to one side of the house, and our original plans included a large island that contained both seating and all the normal island functions, like a sink and cabinets. Our plans changed though when Shaly and Leonel stopped by in the middle of construction with an idea: instead of one large island, they wanted to do two, smaller islands. “Sisters islands,” explained Shaly. We were definitely not into the idea at first—we thought it would look like aisles at the supermarket—but by the time we finished, we were smitten. Just look at ’em! Perfection!

A DINING ROOM TABLE THAT MIGHT ACTUALLY GET USED

During the aforementioned island discussion, Shaly and Leonel explained to us that while a dining room table was necessary, they didn’t expect to use it—they claimed they’d never eat there, just at the island. But when the couple set eyes on this dining set, they both started walking back their earlier statements. The cane chairs with black finish stand out against the neutral rug, and the table offers stellar backyard views so Mom and Dad can enjoy their morning coffee or a lingering dinner and still keep an eye on the kids as they play outside.

JUST ‘FOOFY’ ENOUGH

Shaly taught us a new word during this episode: ‘foofy,’ which she explains is “A Miami-Cuban word for super fancy.” Our goal was to make their new home a little foofy without overdoing it, and this fireplace feature wall does just that. We knocked out the old, outdated fireplace rock and replaced it with this more modern and elevated look. The surrounding custom built-ins offer plenty of storage, while black shiplap above the charcoal tile mantle keeps things elegant.

Del, Jen, and their teenage daughter Carli have been through a lot since losing their home in a fire (thankfully, no one was hurt, but nearly all of their stuff was lost). The family had been staying in a friend’s rental in the months after the tragedy, but were ready to put down roots and find their forever home in Las Vegas. The whole family is big on the outdoors, so it was important to find a place with a nice yard and lots of natural light, but equally important were space for a large entertainment center, and a functional, open kitchen with lots of storage. We found them a marvelous two-story home that was in need of some major updating but was able to give them everything they wanted.

A PLACE FOR MOM

We almost feel bad calling this Mom’s space—it’s in the laundry and mud room after all!—but Jen was adamant that she wanted a nice desk area in the front entrance to drop mail, sort papers, and “just go into a corner by myself,” as she put it. And who are we to deny a woman her peace and quiet?! Jen had originally brought us pictures of a brick-and-mortar floor for inspiration, but the tile version installed here looks almost the exact same and is far easier to keep clean. There’s also a built-in crate for the family’s two dogs, and personal lockers to keep things neat and tidy.

Cozy living room with a gray sectional sofa, blue accent wall, wall-mounted TV, and a hanging chair by French doors
CARLI’S CORNER

Carli’s the youngest of Jen and Del’s three daughters, and she’s the only one still living at home. Although she’s headed off to college next year, her parents wanted to make sure she had space all of her own for hanging out with friends. (Or was it more that Jen and Del didn’t want to share their space with a bunch of teenagers? Tomatoes, to-mah-toes!) Carli was simple but specific with her requests: a big, deep, comfy couch, some furry puffs, a funky feature wall, and cow décor (they’re her favorite animals). Check, check, check, and check!

AND DON’T FORGET ABOUT POPS…

Carli and her older sister Sydney wanted to do something special for their dad, so they worked with us to pull some of Del’s prized possessions out of storage (they hadn’t been in the house during the fire, so they survived) and set up this office just for him. Mom has her mud room, Carli her rec room—it’s only fair that Dad gets a space of his own, too.

Karina and Sam had been living in a lovely, contemporary condo just off the Vegas strip. The place had served them well in their early years together, but as new parents—they recently welcomed their young daughter, Emiliana—they were ready for something more family friendly. For the most part, Karina and Sam were on the same page about their must-haves: an older, more quiet neighborhood, a single-story open floor plan so they could keep an eye on Emiliana from anywhere in the house, hardwood floors throughout, a large backyard, and plenty of space for entertaining. Oh, and one more thing: a wine cave (more on that below). We found them the perfect mid-century modern ranch built in 1952 on an over-sized lot that we were able to modernize while maintaining its original charm.

Before & After

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
COUNTER STATEMENT

Once we tore out the old, boxed-in kitchen—and most of the rest of the home’s interior, too—we gave ourselves a blank slate to build Karina and Sam’s open-concept dream home. (Shoutout to the couple for their awesome demo work!) We kept the kitchen galley-style to work around the fireplace, and the new site-lines let Mom and Dad keep an eye on the baby from the kitchen—or basically anywhere else in the house. Originally, we were going to do all quartz countertops, but when Karina suggested a live-edge wood waterfall countertop for the island, we had to make it happen.

ORANGE YOU GLAD THEY SAVED THIS BANQUET?

Sometimes, a house just hands you a gift: This is the home’s original built-in banquet, which we found while cleaning out the shed. Boy we were excited to see it was still in great shape! Score! Karina and Sam chose to reupholster the piece in this deep, retro color we’re calling “yam” in homage to its original orange hue. And the money we saved restoring this classic piece helped us come stay within our budget despite a few structural surprises we had to handle.

PIÈCE DE RÉSISTANCE

Sam lived in France for a few years and developed a fondness for wine caves—temperature controlled rooms containing a lifetime of wine, “each bottle with a story of its own,” he explained to us. The custom cabinetry in this wine room—the largest one we’ve built—and its black, bi-folding glass doors set it apart as an elegant show piece that perfectly complements the nearby table and chairs, creating a classy-yet-cozy dining and entertaining space.

Terin and Bryan met while working together nearly 20 years ago, and they’ve spent the time since moving around the country and building their businesses—he’s a partner at a consulting firm and she owns a fitness travel company. They’re finally ready to settle down, find their dream home, and they want no detail spared in the process! The couple knew exactly what they were looking for: a modern, French country-inspired home with hardwood floors, a large, white kitchen, clean lines, and indoor-outdoor space for entertaining. We found the couple an airy, spacious home that we made more airy by knocking down walls, updating the windows and fireplaces, and removing excessive amounts of built-ins and wood cabinetry to give Terin and Bryan the chic-yet-cozy home of their dreams.

THE ISLAND OF ALL ISLANDS

The home’s original kitchen was ripped straight out of the ’90s—dark cabinets, odd angles, lots of dark brown, and soffits in the ceiling. We took that all out in favor of white cabinets, clean lines, and a massive island in the middle, creating a timeless, classic look. “You could have a dance party on this island!” exclaimed Tarin when she saw it (and yes, Jonathan did install two ice makers in the island, as requested). Meanwhile, Bryan, like Drew, is not a fan of clutter, so it was important to include enough storage to keep the counters clear.

Modern kitchen with a blue gas range, white cabinets, a white marble countertop, and a patterned tiled backsplash
A RANGE OF SOPHISTICATION

This glorious, 60-inch range and expansive hood elevate this kitchen into a chef’s paradise—perfect for a couple who loves to cook. The patterned backsplash brings in an element of the French country vibe Terin was looking for while keeping things modern. Additionally, the arched area over the stove rounds out the space and gives the room a warm and cozy feel. And note the shelves on the side of the range—more storage means fewer things left out in the open.

Covered outdoor seating area with a fireplace, mounted TV, and a coffee table
CALIFORNIA LOVIN’

An elegant California room for indoor-outdoor entertaining was on the very top of Bryan and Terin’s must-have list. Our original plan for this area had to be adjusted due to some structural issues we uncovered during the renovation, but we couldn’t be happier with the result. The covered area provides protection from the sun and addition of an outdoor fireplace makes this truly a room that can be used year-round. And see those glass doors? They collapse all the way into the wall, creating a completely open flow between the indoor and outdoor spaces.

The post Adam & Lara appeared first on Drew & Jonathan.

]]>

Adam moved in with his fiancé, Lara, and her three rescue dogs shortly after they got engaged. It didn’t take long to realize that things were a bit too tight for anyone’s liking—including the large pups. The couple enlisted us to help them find a home that they could move into before the wedding, which they were also planning at the same time. While that’s a lot to handle at once, we know how nice it is to come back to a finished home once the wedding’s over (from Drew and Linda’s experience!). The pair wanted to stay in the same community where they’d been living as it’s where Lara grew up, and she still has lots of family in the area. They also wanted to be near a golf course—they met at their country club and both enjoy getting out on the links. We eventually found them a home just a block away from their old address that we were able to transform into the open-concept, modern home of their dreams. And bonus: it came with a large backyard that backs right onto the fairway, and has plenty of grass for their four-legged friends.

Before & After

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
A GRAND STATEMENT

We demolished the existing fireplace to create this floor-to-ceiling, linear fireplace, which acts as the centerpiece of the living room and adds a feeling of grandness when you enter the home. We’d originally selected a dark tile for the feature, but after some last-minute back-and-forth with Lara, we landed on this beautiful, stacked-stone marble that not only creates texture and visual interest, but perfectly catches the sunlight from the room’s many windows.

THE 19TH HOLE

How many people get to invite friends over by saying “Why don’t you come by for a few cocktails at the speakeasy?” Well, now Adam and Lara can! This room is hidden off the back of the kitchen by a sliding barn door, and also features a separate entrance into the expansive backyard for truly covert comings-and-goings. Dark paint and and a custom whiskey barrel coffee table gives the room a touch of drama and mysteriousness that contrasts brilliantly with the rest of the home. It’s the perfect place for Adam to host his golf buddies after a few rounds at the course behind the home.

PAWSITIVELY ADORABLE

Adam didn’t consider himself much of a dog guy until he met Lara, who’s a long-time fosterer and has three rescues of her own (including one foster-fail). Adam wanted to surprise his fiancé and their fur-babies with something special, so we worked with him to build a custom canine station. There’s plenty of storage for their pet food, treats, and gear, but the finishing touch is this food and water bowl area, which we’ve accessorized with a pot-filler—oops, make that pup-filler—faucet and a custom backsplash.

Spacious bathroom with beige tile floors, a corner tub, and a glass shower with gold trim
DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
OUT WITH THE STONE, IN WITH THE NEW

The home’s previous owners had built an eye-sore of a peninsula out of rock that looked more at home outdoors than in. And on top of being ugly, it also totally blocked the flow of traffic. We quickly took a sledgehammer to the monstrosity and replaced it with a much more pleasing island that’s perfect for entertaining—and we knocked out the wall between the kitchen and dining room to give Mike and Sophia the open-concept layout they were looking for. Additionally, we installed new Shaker-style cabinets, stainless steel appliances, and marble-look quartz countertops, which all make for an elegant and functional kitchen.

Modern bathroom with white double vanity, freestanding tub, gold fixtures, and blue accents
MAKE EVERY DAY SPA DAY

One of the couple’s must-haves was an spa-like master bath. To accomplish this, we tore out everything and put in a large double vanity, borrowed square footage from the master closet to create an oversized walk-in shower set off by a fixed glass panel, and installed this gorgeous, freestanding tub. Grey herringbone tile flooring is durable and elegant, and the same gold fixtures used throughout the rest of the house offer a youthful finishing touch.

A FIREPLACE THAT MAKES A STATEMENT

Mike and Sophia plan on doing lots of entertaining in the years to come, so it was important to create a cozy space to host friends and family. And what’s more cozy than a fireplace? We replaced the home’s wood-burning unit with a gas model, built a new mantel, and topped it off with a bold, geometric marble tile to really make this feature pop. The result is a classic statement piece that adds a cozy but modern touch to the home’s main indoor gathering place.

With seven kids plus a baby on the way, Austin and Cody needed a home that would comfortably fit a family of 10. Since most houses simply aren’t built for that many people, we knew that whatever we found would have to undergo some major renovations to make it work. Luckily, we found a spacious, two-floor home with a large yard in a convenient neighborhood that everyone agreed felt like home. Over the next eight weeks—we had to get the renovations done before baby number eight arrived!—we knocked down walls, overhauled the kitchen and family room, and made sure every detail served a purpose in order to give Austin and Cody a new home that’s as functional as it is stylish.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
TOO MANY COOKS IN THE KITCHEN? NOT HERE!

Of all the rooms in the house, Cody and Austin were most particular about the kitchen—and with good reason! The whole family likes to help cook, and the oldest kids are frequent bakers (they recently sold more than 40 dozen cookies to raise money for a vacation!). There also had to be enough room for the whole crew to comfortably sit down to a meal. An oversized island, dedicated baking station, and 22′ built-in banquette with dual tables ensure there’s a place for everyone in the family’s new kitchen.

LOADS OF FUN

Doing laundry for 10 is a big job, and the home’s original laundry room was definitely not up to the task. We took out a closet to enlarge the room’s useable space, and also added more cabinets and counter space to make room for laundry baskets. We could have stacked the washer and dryer to even further maximize space, but side-by-side units are easier for the kids to operate, which was among the most important consideration for this room!

A STUDY NOOK THEY’LL NEVER WANT TO LEAVE

We carved out a bit of the family room to create a space for the kids to call their own. We wanted the space to be functional for both studying and lounging, which we accomplished with built-in workstations, plenty of storage space (each kid gets their cubby area) and sturdy, cushy loungers are great for doing homework or hanging out. With a homework nook like this, who wouldn’t want to study all night?

Darryl fell in love with Nevada’s mountains and desert when he was stationed in the area back in the ’80s. Now that the military man is semi-retired, he wanted to make his favorite vacation town his hometown, and he enlisted his daughter, Alex, to help him find the perfect place. While Alex won’t be living with her dad, Darryl wanted to make sure she felt at home anytime she visited. This father-daughter duo have nearly opposite tastes: Darryl likes a more traditional layout with eclectic touches, while Alex prefers an open-concept with clean, modern details. After seeing about a hundred places, we finally found a funky, Mediterranean-style home that made Darryl feel “all warm and fuzzy inside”—his most important requirement.

Before & After

Living room with green carpet, fireplace, and ceiling fan before renovation
DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
OPEN TO COMPROMISE

The home’s original kitchen was small and enclosed, with a drop-ceiling that only made it feel more cramped. To open things up, we removed the counters in favor of a large island with built-in breakfast bar, raised the ceiling, and enlarged the doorway to the dining room. This opened up the layout of the first floor enough to gain Alex’s approval, while still keeping things sectioned-off enough to suit Darryl’s tastes.

RAISING THE BAR

Both Darryl and Alex wanted a dedicated bar area—but the outdated, enclosed bar (complete with stained glass!) was not what either had in mind. We quickly knocked that out and pushed back the wall to make room for a full-length bar, complete with double wine fridges (Darryl’s quite the connoisseur; Alex is more of a cocktail girl). A fun, metallic wall adds texture and a touch of the eclectic feel Darryl enjoys, while also pulling through details from the stainless steel and black kitchen appliances.

SOAK IT IN

This renovation went fairly smoothly, but we did run into an issue when it became apparent that the tub for Darryl’s master bath wouldn’t arrive in time. We arranged a little father-daughter shopping trip to scope out new options, and boy, was that an adventure! We knew the duo were on different pages when it comes to their decorating tastes, but on the subject of tubs, they weren’t even in the same book! Luckily, we found this beauty, which has the traditional claw feet that make Darryl happy, while still passing muster with Alex, too, thanks to its black accents and clean lines.

Carolyn and Javier recently got married and combined households, so our job was to find this newly blended family a home that would feel like “theirs”—not “his” or “hers.” To get there, it was important to make sure there was something for everyone: a gourmet kitchen for Carolyn, a spacious garage for Javier to work on his vintage cars, and a pool for the kids. Location was crucial, too: the newlyweds didn’t want their oldest daughter, Lindsey, to have to switch high schools. The couple looked at a lot of houses, and they eventually landed on a gorgeous home in the right neighborhood that Jonathan was able to renovate to check everyone’s boxes. After a bit of back and forth to balance design decisions with budget concerns, we’re excited to give Carolyn and Javier a place for their new family to put down roots.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
GOODBYE YELLOW OAK RAILINGS

Carolyn was decidedly not a fan of the yellow oak details that originally filled this home. And it’s understandable: this classic early ’90s design choice didn’t age well. Fortunately, her daughter and new hubby were willing to put in some sweat equity to give their mom and wife what she wanted. The two worked together to demo the particularly offensive staircase railings to make way for this more modern look. What a bonding opportunity!

Modern living room with tan sofas, a fireplace, built-in shelves, and natural light
BURNING LOVE

The fireplace was originally tucked into the corner, which took up valuable space—and just looked weird. Moving it was going to be pricey, but for Carolyn, it was a non-negotiable. Marriage is all about compromise, and that’s just what the couple did. Javier and Lindsey’s aforementioned work on the staircase gave Jonathan the time and budget to move the fireplace and give the newlyweds a proper cuddle nook.

BIG FANS OF THIS GOURMET KITCHEN!

This family plans on doing a lot of entertaining, so a modern, sleek, open-concept kitchen was a must-have. We painted the shaker-style cabinets a warm white to provide some contrast with the light gray Quartz countertops and concrete farmhouse sink. But it’s the fan-shaped, geometric, blue-hued tiling that really catches the eye and adds a fun pop of color and texture.

Scott brothers, a man, and a woman standing in a modern living room with light wood floors and white walls Scott brothers, a man, and a woman standing in a modern living room with light wood floors and white walls

Our mission for Lauren and Jeremy was clear: find these Las Vegas-natives a home to give their kids the same, happy childhood they had. We found the young couple the perfect ranch-style home, and although the sellers flat-out ignored their first offer (it was too far below the asking price), a second, higher offer sealed the deal. We tore down nearly every wall to create an open floor plan, converted the garage into useable square footage, and completely redid the back patio to give Jeremy and Lauren a beautiful family home that will grow with them as their kids do.

WIDE OPEN SPACES

Lauren and Jeremy wanted an open ground floor that would allow them to keep their eyes on the kids from almost anywhere. To make this a reality, we knocked down nearly all the walls—and removed the sunken, retro bar that was smack-dab in the middle of the living room—and leveled out the floors to give the kitchen, dining room, and living room a more natural flow. We also added a 20-foot stacking sliding door that lets in tons of natural light and creates a true indoor-outdoor living space. (It collapses all the way in!)

Organized pantry with open shelving, labeled baskets, and a wood countertop
ORGANIZATION IS SEXY

“I might actually cook now!” were the first words out of Lauren’s mouth when she saw her updated kitchen and pantry. With the new dining area and large island, we were able to borrow space from the eat-in kitchen to enlarge the pantry. The resulting oversized butler’s pantry has an additional sink, two wine refrigerators, and plenty of adjustable shelving. Classic white frameless cabinets, contrasting hardware, and quartz countertops throughout the kitchen and pantry keep things beautiful and functional.

Playroom with a TV, storage cabinets, hanging chair, and flamingo decor
MAKE IT CHILD-FRIENDLY, BUT NOT CHILDISH

Another must-have on Lauren and Jeremy’s list? A playroom for the kids. To make this happen, we absorbed the garage into the home’s square footage, essentially making a new room off the kitchen. The goal was to create a space that would grow with the kids—nothing too “theme-y” or juvenile. Boho touches like a hanging chair and handmade flamingos suspended from the ceiling, as well as functional pieces like a sectional couch and cozy ottomans, make the room perfect for kids and grown-ups alike.

Mark and Dave had big dreams of a mid-century home with an open layout and ample room for entertaining. We found them a fabulous 1,700 square-foot ranch built in 1961 (by the same architect who built one of Liz Taylor’s homes, no less!) that they were willing to take a chance on. Our plans included removing a fourth bedroom to make way for a dining room off the kitchen, updating the original fireplace, and making sure both owners have space to call their own without sacrificing room for houseguests. While the renovation didn’t go exactly as planned, we ended up with a bright and fun space that checks all their boxes.

TREASURE ISLAND

Mark and Dave are big on entertaining, which means the kitchen simply must be part of the action. This over-sized island provides plenty of extra counter space for prepping food and mixing drinks, and the sleek, yellow stools pull color from the dining room and front door into the room. Plenty of drawers and a built-in microwave mean this centerpiece isn’t just fashionable—it’s functional, too!

LIGHT MY FIRE

The fireplace is one of the first things you see upon entering the house, so it was important to make it feel less mid-century meh and more mid-century meow (Drew’s words). A fresh coat of paint helped modernize the classic structure while keeping the original stone detail, while a runway made of white tiles draws-in the eye from the doorway.

A PLACE TO CALL HER OWN

Last but not least: Margo’s room. Mark’s drag persona Margo is busy booking shows and working the stage, and at the end of the day, she really just needs a place to hang her wig. Her new dressing room is fit for a star: it has plenty of closet space, versatile lighting, and custom-designed pegs to hold her wigs. And see that gorgeous green couch? It actually pulls out into a bed, just in case Margo—or one of the guys—has a guest stay over.

After taking a chance on love, Las Vegas newlyweds Mindy and Paul went all-in on a search for the home where they could build their new life together. Over 150 houses later, they found the one in the right location with the potential to create the perfect space for entertaining. We took care of the oversized entryway, Roman style columns, and relocated the kitchen to make way for an open-concept flow complete with a large dining space, bar, and a nook built for game night. In the end, even though they traded a honeymoon island for a kitchen island, Mindy got the gourmet kitchen of her dreams.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
ENTRY LEVELS

Mindy and Paul’s original entryway was wasted space, with a big landing and gaudy columns taking up valuable real estate. We wanted the area to feel more open and elevated, so we got rid of the columns and used contrasting flooring, new doors, and light fixtures to create an interesting setup without taking up floor space. Finally, we cut back the raised floor to create a straight step down into the living area—now this is a grand entrance!

BLINGY BACKSPLASH

We knew the bar in the game room had to look cool and sexy, but equally important was function. We included plenty of wine storage and a super-fun champagne trough sink. The radiant backsplash tile—a combo of silver and pewter mirror—contrasts beautifully with the swanky black cabinets. Mix in the stylishness of Mindy and Paul, and their guests will always want to be at their new home!

DINING NOOK

We transformed Mindy and Paul’s breakfast nook into the perfect area for playing games with friends. The ingredients: a modern minimalist light fixture, bold blue velvet chairs, and a super-textural silverish-gray wallcovering.
