I am a huge fan of the Petersen Auto Museum, so getting to drive one of their cars would be a dream come true. While I need to save my budget after going all out on these past few rounds, I still intend to knock the socks off the judges’ feet and win me those wheels.

All-Ages Fun

I wanted to create a bedroom that would appeal to kids of any age. I added a fun yet neutral wallpaper that can grow and change with them into their teenage years.

Pretty in Pink

Keeping up with my previous bold design choices, I decorated the side bathroom with pink and green tiles. Once I added in the classic vanity and accents, the space had a one-of-a-kind vintage atmosphere.

Floral Fashion

I loved the wallpaper results in the kids’ bedroom so much, I ended up using another print in the den as well. Surrounded by tons of custom built-in shelves, potential buyers can look up and catch a floral surprise.

There’s nothing more rejuvenating than a win—which is good because this is the one week I can’t be caught slacking. Making one space pop is easy, but it’s these extra rooms that will make or break my final sale.

Jonathan’s Design Highlights

Play All Day

There’s no better place to put a wallpaper feature than in a child’s bedroom. The light, colorful tones keep the space feeling airy and bright, while the study area right below it provides the kids with a place to focus or play.

Cozy Comfort

“Plush” and “comfy” are the two words everyone wants to use when describing their guest room. Despite the smaller footprint, I was careful with my furniture placement to make sure the space felt cozy and intimate rather than cramped and crowded.

Bright and Blue

The original beams were already a charming feature, so I was able to save some extra money by keeping them in, just with a fresh coat of paint. The French doors off to the side add a ton of natural lighting that makes this space a beautiful place for the entire family to hang out.

We’re halfway through the season, and Drew’s winning streak is still going strong. Jonathan’s determined to pull out all the stops for the Addition Dwelling Unit (ADU) challenge since they’re both converting their identically sized garages. But just because they’re on equal footing for this round doesn’t mean Drew’s about to let his winning vibes fade. This time there are no rewards for winning, only a punishment for losing. Once Breegan Jane and Trixie Mattel decide the winner, the loser will be sent to play tour guide on an LA tourist bus!

Drew’s Design Highlights

Tuscan Tiles

This space is small, but I wanted to make sure it had all the luxuries that can be found inside the main area. Not only is the kitchen fully sized, but the beautiful Tuscan backsplash creates a rustic, earthy atmosphere for the entire space.

Rustic Relaxation

Who said neutrals have to be boring? During the day, the main area is a warm and inviting lounge where guests can hang out together. At night, a hidden bed pops out from the wall, transforming it into an impromptu guest bedroom.

Private Peace

Having a private bathroom is always a major selling point, so I went the extra mile and made sure there was a private laundry space as well. Any guest will feel so comfortable here, they might decide they want to stay forever!

This is where my research will pay off. Since we’re so close to the airport, a lot of homeowners like to rent out their ADUs to traveling flight crews. Once I’m finished with this challenge, I’ll have the ultimate guest space that no buyer will be able to resist.

The Guestroom of the Future

For the main area, I wanted to recreate that California coastal feel by integrating wood grains with a beachy flair. It’s a great place to chill out during the day, but the real wow factor comes out at night, when the guest bed descends from the ceiling with just the push of a button!

Stylish and Soothing

I wanted this bathroom to feel soothing and refreshing, and to carry over the modern cottage theme from the main house. The shower’s textured marble tile is stylish without taking away from the space’s relaxing atmosphere.

Outdoor Beauty, Inside

We have such a great location by the beach, so I made sure to leave room for all the natural lighting to shine. The sand-colored cabinets and marble countertops make the kitchen feel extremely luxurious without having to break the bank.

And he’s not eager to give away his crown just yet. To declare once and for all who’s king of the Brother vs. Brother kitchens, Alex Guarnaschelli and Veronica Valencia are stopping by to judge the rooms and award the winner a romantic dinner from a famous Michelin chef.

It feels good to start the kitchen challenge with a win behind me. Jonathan may usually beat me at kitchens, but I plan to go all out and create a big, beautiful one that will blow him right out of the competition.

Colorful Cabinets

Just like with the living room, I wanted to focus on color in this kitchen. From the subtle plaster wash on the wall to the teal storage cabinets, this will be a unique space buyers can’t find anywhere else.

Stylish Stove

Whether you’re a professional chef or an amateur still getting your bearings, you deserve a space that’s both fun and functional. My checker-tile vent hood is so stylish and playful that any buyer or judge will love the chance to give it a whirl.

Everyone’s Included

There are a lot of multigenerational households in this area, so providing plenty of seating was a priority. I ran into some space issues when I tried to include an extra dining area, but by converting it to banquet seating, I was able to fit in everything I wanted.

I may have lost the last round, but Drew gets way too overconfident when it comes to this challenge. Since I stayed on budget, I now have all the winning ingredients to create a new, modern kitchen that is almost triple the size of the original.

Bold and Beautiful

I installed stormy gray cabinetry to create a bold, modern look and complement the light hardwood floors. The dark countertops act as a beautiful contrasting accent, ending in a waterfall edge.

Open Space, Open Sightlines

Having enough prep space is super important, so I installed a ginormous kitchen island and made sure it came with an induction cooktop. Combined with the flush ceiling vent hood, potential buyers will now have plenty of space and open sightlines.

Dramatic Dining

Last but certainly not least, I decided to go with banquet seating for the dining area. It provides room for guests to gather but still matches the dramatic and elevated style of the rest of the space.

For Brother Vs. Brother season 8, we’re heading back to Southern California and taking our competition to a whole new level. We got rid of any past budget constraints, neighborhood limits, and design challenges.

The only rule left is to see who can make the most cold, hard cash by the season’s end. But to keep us on our toes, Kendra Wilkinson and David Bromstad are stopping by this week to decide which living room they prefer and to present the winner with an exclusive NASA reward.

Since Jonathan sprung this “no rules” thing on me in Brother Vs. Brother season 8, I need to outsmart him in this first round. I bought a fixer upper in El Sereno so that I can save more on my purchase, spend just a bit extra on renovations, and then pull in massive profits by the end.

Knock Your Coats Off

A good first impression is always important, so I wanted the entryway to have the same eclectic style as the living room. Add in a convenient coat closet, and now guests can get comfortable before they’re swept away by the house’s wow factor.

A Stone Sensation

There’s a lot to like about the 80s, but dated floors and fireplaces aren’t it. I installed light hardwood flooring and a new stone mantel to create a modern, eye-catching centerpiece.

Colorful Company

It’s important to balance out the formal and the fun, so I made sure there was plenty of seating for friends and family that still showed off some personality. Company can now enjoy each other and the colorful decor.

If Drew thinks he has an easy win, he needs to think again. To maximize my sale price no matter what, I found a house in Westchester, a highly in-demand neighborhood right on the beach.

Welcome Home

The bedrooms used to be accessible right off the front door, so to give future residents more privacy and focus the layout’s flow, I created a snug little entrance nook. Now guests can either sneak off to freshen up in the powder room or head to the living room for some fun and conversation.

Fantastic Features

Since the house is now converted to exclusive electric heating, I installed a brand-new fireplace to fit the switch. It has floor-to-ceiling dark stone and two bookshelves flank its sides, creating a striking feature wall.

Cottagecore Chic

I wanted to make sure each piece I chose fit the look and feel of a modern cottage. The light tones keep the space feeling airy and bright without sacrificing the warmth and comforts every home should have.

OK, so even though I lost the individual challenge round, I know what this house needs to secure top dollar in this neighborhood. Luckily, I have a few classic features, like an arched entryway and iron balconies, that simply cannot be replicated.

TUSCAN TRIUMPH

I have a huge backyard to work with, so I’m betting our buyer is going to want to spend a lot of time out here. We’ll draw them out with a full pizza oven and grill so they can enjoy outdoor dinners all year long.

We’re in Southern California, so why not harness the power of the sun to keep costs down and improve the efficiency of our home? These are the value-adds that buyers here are looking for: a home that reflects a sustainable, healthy lifestyle.

DON’T LET ‘EM SEE YOU SWEAT

Like I said, my house is all about health and wellness, and my buyer is going to want to stay healthy inside and out (especially after that pizza). I’m using every inch of the backyard to my advantage by putting together a secluded outdoor wellness area, complete with this amazing sauna.

Curb appeal is always critical to getting a major offer on a home, but I can’t count on just the front yard to sell this house. I’m going where no man—or at least, the other brother—will go on this challenge: I’m putting in a pool.

TILE STYLE

Throughout this challenge, I’ve used tile to emphasize my modern Spanish theme, and the outside is no exception. Pairing an intricate pattern with natural tones in the outdoor dining furniture creates just the updated rustic balance I’m looking for.

EVERYTHING’S GOING SWIMMINGLY

I don’t think I can accurately count how many times Drew’s heart stopped beating as we slipped this shipping container pool right past his house into our backyard. (I don’t know what he was worried about; we easily had an inch to spare.) I carried our tile into the seating area, which perfectly frames the pool’s glass wall. Buyers will be seeing blue, and I’ll be seeing green.

PRIVACY, PLEASE

I did have to remember that this backyard design is going right next to Drew’s backyard, so I provided a little bit of privacy for both sides with this cabana-style outdoor seating area. Now Drew can see all the fun his neighbors will be having, and they can, well, continue to have fun without him (I’m sure they’ll invite Linda).

Jonathan definitely will be gunning for a comeback, which I obviously can’t let happen! My guest bedrooms are going to be kid-ready for the families that will want to make this house their dream home.

PALETTE CLEANSER

My corner chateau has been all about good vibes and relaxation, and there’s no reason to stop now with this guest bedroom. By staying consistent with our neutral color story throughout the home, buyers will understand how all the rooms fit together—and they’ll be ready to sign on the dotted line.

KID-TESTED, PARENT-APPROVED

My biggest bedroom in this challenge is going to the littlest residents, because a kids’ bedroom is also a kids’ playroom! I incorporated more color here and in the adjacent bathroom, with a relaxed, welcoming design that allows kids to interact with the furniture.

THE MURAL OF THE STORY

I wasn’t going to let Jonathan get all the credit for creative ceilings. I installed a barrel ceiling of my own in the hallway, then took it up a notch with restored ironwork on the staircase and a hand-painted mural that stretched the length of the hallway and up into the ceiling.

After losing two challenges in a row, I wasn’t going to wait around for my luck to change: I had to go big and bold in my  guest bedrooms. My biggest challenge: making the styles of each bedroom both distinct and cohesive. Easy enough, right? Right?

PRINTS FOR YOU

When I said I was going bold, I meant it: the guest bedroom had to feel like its own oasis, as though someone had walked into a different world. For me, that world was full of blues, greens and golds, with original artwork from my friend Anna Ullman that will ensure this room is one-of-a-kind.

MAKING AN UNDERSTATEMENT

I went really big with prints in two of my three bedrooms, so I went for a more neutral palette with cleaner sightlines in this bedroom. Notice how all the furniture is on the same scale: a little bit lower to the floor, but comfortable, with tasteful stripes throughout the accessories.

A BATHROOM TO ENVY

We’re back to bold in the guest bathroom! This emerald green tile runs from the sink to the shower and holds its own with our print-heavy guest bedrooms and our dramatic powder room. This high-end feel is exactly what potential buyers in this neighborhood will be looking for in every room, and this bathroom will not disappoint.

Coming off a big win last week, I was ready to even the score by building a new main bedroom/bathroom suite on my addition. With second-floor views and my secret luxury amenities, I’m going to take this competition to a whole new level.

BUILDING A MYSTERY

I don’t have many rules in design, but I do have this one: if you can put in a secret bookcase, you definitely have to. It’s useful for storage, it adds a unique element for buyers … and come on, who doesn’t love a secret bookcase?!

A NEW WAY TO MONITOR SCREEN TIME

But hey, why stop there with the surprise reveals, when you can have a TV pop up at the foot of your bed? Aside from the cool factor, storing the TV helps keep the design clean and the vibe relaxed.

FANCY MEETING YOU HERE

Honestly, I may have outdone myself with the reveals in this room. I’ve seen this barn-door/passthrough window feature in high-end hotels, which is exactly the feel I want for this main bedroom suite. It makes both rooms feel bigger and keeps clean lines throughout the space.

I can’t believe I let Drew back in the competition with last week’s loss. It’s time to go big by using our addition space to my advantage, with a massive main bedroom and bathroom, and a walk-in closet to boot (for boots?).

BEAM ME UP

I’ve had success before in this competition by raising the roof—well, technically, the ceilings–so I’m doing it again here. These beams tie into the design of the kitchen and other areas of the house, but they’re even more impressive here, running the width of the room in these beautiful vaulted ceilings.

TWO BATHS IN ONE

Modern Spanish flair has been the name of the game in this house, and I’m bringing it into the main bathroom with more stunning tile and the statement piece: a clawfoot tub. Plus, placing the tub right under the windows will literally bathe our buyer in natural light. (I love it when great puns and great design come together.)

STORAGE WARS

I’m betting our potential buyers and our judge, Jasmine Roth, will want to see lots of storage in our main bathroom. I’m delivering with additional cabinet space right outside the beautiful shower, too, for those times you forget your towel. It’s the little things (in big spaces) that are going to win me this challenge.

Coming off two straight losses, I have to go all in on the bonus space challenge. Luckily for me, I can get into the head of what a buyer in this neighborhood wants most, because I am a buyer in this neighborhood. (Don’t ask why this hasn’t helped in the previous challenges.)

SOME HEALTHY COMPETITION

Let’s face it: We’re in L.A., and that means people want to be healthy and look and feel good. My home gym comes complete with pilates machine, stationary bike and room for yoga. It’s the perfect spot for potential buyers to get fit—and to make Jonathan sweat.

GIVE US SOME SPACE

We set out to create a separate, peaceful vibe in the additional dwelling unit. These new arched windows combined with thoughtful furniture (sized appropriately to the space) create a welcoming feel for guests, who can unwind and make themselves at home whether they’re preparing for a quiet night in or an epic night out.

TURN DOWN THE VOLUME

We carried muted white tones throughout the guest space, including here in the bedroom, which features a gallery wall with gold-framed prints. Everyone deserves to feel comfortable and relaxed at the end of the day, and this light but warm color palette, combined with a massive bed, will give every guest a good night’s sleep.

The detached garage in this house was extremely gross, but the space was perfect for an additional dwelling unit. My mind was in two places at once: turning the ADU into a great guest space, while also coming back into the main house for a classic home office and a kitchen conversion to a coat room and powder room.

GLAM UP THE POWDER ROOM

The back of the house is where the old kitchen was, so now that we have a gleaming new one, it was time to rethink the whole space. I added a coat room with tool space in the very back, and put this luxurious powder room off to the side. Sure, it might be used for washing up, but why not do it in style?

ADU ADD-ONS

Our garage didn’t need to be a garage anymore, which is good, because it barely was one in the first place. Instead, we created the perfect additional dwelling unit, with a Murphy bed and fold-out glass doors in order to maximize space and style.

BUILT-IN ADVANTAGE

Finally, because I couldn’t do enough in one challenge, I also took on a home office, where these massive, beautiful built-ins really stand out against the stylish ceiling. I can’t get enough of the blue set against the wood and leather furniture. This space will make a prospective buyer actually want to go to work.

Losing the first challenge to Jonathan stings, but I have ways to get him back in the kitchen and dining room challenge. In my house, big things—like a custom painted barrel ceiling—come in small(er) packages, so I’ll pull out all my space-saving know-how to pack in a lot of storage and maintain comfort in both spaces.

THAT OLD CEILING

Our dining room’s beautiful painted plaster ceiling was integral to preserving the home’s historic character, but like everything else in the house, it needed an update. I carefully drilled a hole for the chandelier over the custom dinner table, and thankfully everything held up to create a beautiful combination of modern lighting to illuminate a priceless feature.

FOUNTAINS OF PAIN

You wouldn’t know it now, but we had to tear out a funky internal fountain in order to put in this kitchen storage and wet bar next to the hidden fridge and freezer–and it was not easy! The water damage the fountain created added to our problems, but that was nothing some heavy machinery couldn’t solve. All’s well that ends well, and this project ended up pretty perfectly.

BENCHWARMING

We didn’t have all the space Jonathan’s house had, but we made every inch count. We got creative and put a bench on the end of the island, so we could fit everyone around our kitchen table.

Feeling pretty good after my first win, we went right into my strong spot: kitchens. And I was not going to leave anything to chance in this competition, so we went big everywhere: double islands, a wall of windows and a massive dining room addition. I might be going overboard to beat Drew … nah, not possible.

MORE BARRELS THAN DONKEY KONG

I remembered Drew’s house had a barrel ceiling in his dining room, so of course, I had to up the ante and do not one, not two, but four barrels in my dining room ceiling. What I couldn’t replicate, however, was that painted plaster, so I went to a Hollywood scenic specialist to recreate a domed brick ceiling that created exactly the look I wanted.

CEILINGS, NOTHING MORE THAN CEILINGS

More ceiling fun in the kitchen: we had to move all the recessed lights to fit within our beams, which we had already moved … and that was before we discovered we had to move our islands, too! All these moving pieces finally fell in place, though, and the result was something Drew couldn’t touch: massive wooden beams, two islands and plenty of kitchen seating.

PUTTING THE WIN IN WINDOWS

We wanted the seating room next to the kitchen to have so much natural light, we even created a see-through fireplace to let more light in! The size of this custom piece worried us a little bit at first, but ended up fitting in perfectly. Now we have a kitchen and dining area bathed in sunlight, perfect for quiet mornings or big family get-togethers.

Jonathan seems to think he got one over on me by taking the house next door, but hey—it’s a short commute to work on my corner chateau, and I get to spy on his work every step of the way. Don’t mind me, just checking my email over here (and, uh, taking a few photos).

PARLOR GAMES

I had initially planned to put custom built-ins around the parlor fireplace, but my budget had other ideas. Instead, I went for a clean finish that would tie in well with the wallpaper and complement the show-stopping coffered ceiling.

ONE GOOD FIREPLACE DESERVES ANOTHER

With the drama of the parlor, I wanted to bring some understated elegance into the living room with white oak floors and a brand-new fireplace. Our potential buyer is not going to want to compromise on comfort, and why should they? Best of both worlds.

RAISING THE STAKES

We weren’t able to keep the ceiling designs in the entryway due to old water damage, so there was no way I was going to let that happen to these beautiful beams. In fact, I designed all the art and decor around them! Look closely and you’ll see the hand-painted design on the ceiling that refers back to the floral paintings on the beams.

I tricked Drew into getting this house, and it’s even better that he’s going to have to watch the winning renovations happen from his own backyard. Our first task was creating an entryway that felt open and inviting, which meant taking out a lot of existing walls and letting the light back into this gorgeous home.

A FULL SPANISH REVIVAL

Unlike Drew, I only had one fireplace to work on, so I made it count by adding a classic arched opening and this Spanish-inspired tile inside. The angled profile of the fireplace itself runs all the way to the ceiling— the perfect way to draw the eye to my next magic trick …

YOU’RE NOT JUST SMILING—YOU’RE BEAMING

Matching the mantel to these wooden beams ties this room together and makes it feel cozy, even with a lot of white throughout the room. Fresh and airy, California-style.

INSPIRED FROM TOP TO BOTTOM

While I was pretty proud of myself for thinking of the groin vault ceiling in the entryway, I wanted any potential buyer to see the thoughtful detail in every aspect of the home. This inlaid tile does the job and then some—it practically creates a path to guide you right into the living room, or even up the tiled stairs.
