After taking care of the kitchen, it was time to do something more honeymoon-ish for Drew and Linda’s house, so we focused on the main suite. We turned a guest bedroom into a sparkling main bathroom, while giving each of them their own spaces to enjoy: a walk-in closet (mostly for Drew), and a craft room (entirely for Linda).

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
FIRE REPLACEMENT

Drew had his heart set on a gas fireplace, but we weren’t able to vent it far enough across the room without adding a massive extra vent to the side of the house. Not to worry, though: we found an electric fireplace that will still keep the room nice and toasty, with a clean profile and a glamorous tile surround.

TILE TIME

Speaking of tile, we framed the centerpiece—the beautiful soaking tub—with black-and-white tile, both on the floor and in the shower, that shimmered in the sunlight. This bathroom has a feature at every turn, and the tile backdrop highlights them all.

FOLLOW THE PATTERNS

There was never really any question if Linda would be getting a craft room; the only question was how colorful it would be! Linda pulled her inspiration from some of the old wallpaper patterns she found in the house, which she turned into prints for pillows. Under those cushions: tons of storage for her many, many crafting tools and projects.

We were getting close to finishing Drew and Linda’s Honeymoon House—well, the inside of it, anyway! Now it’s time to tackle the outside, where we worked to keep the historic charm up front while transforming up a very overgrown backyard.

A NEW (OLD) DOOR OPENS

The key to curb appeal at Drew and Linda’s home started with the front door: a beautiful wooden arched piece that needed some love and renewal. Luckily, we had just the right person for the job: Brett Waterman, of DIY Network’s Restored. He was kind enough to totally restore the front door as a wedding present to Drew and Linda, and the result was nothing short of stunning.

Beautifully landscaped backyard with a swimming pool, patio areas, and lush greenery
BACKYARD OASIS

The backyard was a bit of a mess when Drew and Linda bought the house, with overgrown trees and patches of grass and weeds—not to mention the giant wall of ivy we had to literally pull off the back of the house! We used every square inch of the yard to create a peaceful place to take a swim, sit by the fire or play games in the yard. We wanted to blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living in this space, and we think we succeeded.

Outdoor deck with dining area, wicker furniture, and a striped umbrella near a hot tub
ROOFTOP RELAXATION

The house originally had a small balcony that you could only access through a window—and once you got out there, it was even less safe. By building up a new outdoor deck, we were able to create a more formal outdoor dining area, as well as a casual hangout spot and our personal favorite: the hot tub. This space now has something for everyone, along with a beautiful sunset view.

After our main bedroom and bathroom suite reveal, Jonathan and JD were feeling a little left out, so we turned our attention to our guest rooms. Drew and Linda love to host friends and family whenever possible, so we knew they would go above and beyond to create the perfect environment for guests to relax and feel right at home.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
TAKING OUT THE GUESTWORK

Our goal in the main guest suite was to make it feel like a retreat: somewhere people would feel comfortable enough dropping their bags, kicking off their shoes and relaxing for a bit before gathering with the family. To do that, we wanted it to feel a little different from the rest of the house, so we used shiplap and beadboard to create a more modern design aesthetic than the rest of the house.

Modern bedroom with sliding doors, round mirror, and view of sitting area with fireplace
SLIDE INTO BED

Space was at a premium in the main guest suite, so we had to get creative to maintain both privacy and style. These sliding barn doors provide both, giving our guests a beautifully designed space to rest after a long night of games and laughter.

Elegant bathroom with green tiles, black vanity, gold fixtures, and a herringbone floor
JACK AND JILL WENT UP A VERY GREEN HILL

For the other two guest bedrooms, we designed a shared bathroom that would help our guests feel energized and refreshed, and there’s no better color for that than green! We paired this lush subway tile with our metallics-on-black motif from throughout the house to create a fresh variation on our design theme.

The kitchen in Drew and Linda’s Honeymoon House was barely there—tucked away in a corner of the house, nowhere close to the dining room. We had to do a total redesign of the floor plan, using an old outdoor space as our footprint for a new, light-filled kitchen and dining space that would inspire both delicious meals and great conversation.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
FUNCTION AND FASHION

Beyond the kitchen basics we needed—and this house needed just about everything—we wanted the kitchen to continue the Old Hollywood, Art Deco glam we brought to the entry spaces. We focused on a custom hood vent, placing metallics against a dark backdrop, and then continued that look through the countertops, island, doors and all the way to the conservatory window. The result: a full functional kitchen that magically feels both dramatic and light.

Elegant dining room with a large wooden table, upholstered chairs, decorative shelving, and a modern chandelier
BUILT-IN STYLE

The new dining room had plenty of space for a long table and high-backed chairs, but we needed to create a transition between the dining space and the rest of the home. These custom built-ins do just the trick, providing us with an opportunity to tie styles together without feeling cluttered or out of place.

DOWN AND OUT

As the kitchen buildout progressed, Drew decided he didn’t just want go out—he wanted to go down, with a full basement including a wine cellar. Basement buildouts are unusual in this part of California because of earthquake concerns, but once we got the all-clear from the geologists, we were able to give Drew and Linda the wine cellar and storage space they were looking for.

Drew and Linda have finally bought a house, and with Jonathan’s help, they’re making the renovation a family project! Their 1921 Los Angeles home has beautiful features on a lovely street, but is in need of major upgrades throughout the space. Once the crew lands on a new floor plan, it’s time to make a new, grand first impression with the entryway, living room and study at the front of the home.

Before & After

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
STAIRWAY TO HAVEN

The original staircase was beautiful, but when we attempted to save the whole thing, we discovered the spindles and treads were in really bad shape. Thankfully, the handrail was salvageable, so we kept it in one piece and reinstalled it upon these modern spindles that introduce the old Hollywood, Art Deco style that’s prevalent throughout the house.

SAVING SOMETHING IN OUR BACK POCKET (DOORS)

The original pocket doors in this house were amazing and in good shape, but after raising the ceilings, they needed to “grow” to fit! We added some height to the doors and repainted everything to make them look brand new. With the details we added throughout the home office, there’s no question these doors were the perfect tool for encouraging some peace and quiet, while still providing natural light and a welcoming feel.

CLASSIC FEEL, NEW DETAILS

The original ceiling had a plaster curve that was impossible to salvage, so Jonathan came up with a custom molding that provided a similar waterfall feel to match the home’s new style. One thing we did keep: the pentagonal opening of the original fireplace, complete with original trim peeking from the new stone façade.
