If you’ve seen the Park House or their newly renovated New York City apartment, you know that Jonathan and Zooey have no problems merging their design tastes. In both spaces, they combined whimsical pattern, color, and ornate detailing to create homes they both love—and love being in together. But how exactly did Jonathan and Zooey work on combining their interior design styles to get that picture-perfect look that feels effortless? And if you’re having trouble getting on the same page as your living partner, what advice does he have for you?

Jonathan is spilling all his secrets on how to blend your individual tastes with a significant other or roommates , and sharing advice on how to combine your styles in a way that feels cohesive, intentional, and respectful—rather than messy, disjointed, and stressful. See his tips in detail in the video above, and don’t forget to follow the Drew and Jonathan YouTube channel to get helpful advice and tips like this every week. (P.S. If you haven’t watched the walk-through video of his and Zooey’s NYC apartment, you’re missing out! Catch it here and see the exclusive look into all the fine details.)

Jonathan’s Tips on Merging Design Styles With Your Significant Other

1. Discuss Must-Haves vs. Nice-to-Haves

When you’re first combining households, you likely can’t (and probably shouldn’t!) bring everything you both have. To avoid an overwhelming amount of boxes on move-in day, discuss each other’s wants. vs needs so you start off strong and on the same page. “Is there a family heirloom, or a collectable, or a gift that you gave each other that is an absolute must and you want to make sure it’s showcased? Put it on the must-have list,” Jonathan says. “The other stuff that’s like, ‘Well, we have it but we can probably do without it.’ Move it over on the other list. That way, you already know here’s where we draw the line in the sand and here’s the stuff that’s maybe not as important.”

2. Whoever Uses a Space More Often Has the Final Say

Vibrant kitchen with green cabinets, patterned backsplash, and gold pendant lights
The kitchen at the Park House.

“In our house, Zooey is the cook. She is amazing, and runs that kitchen—so she should have the final say in what we do in that space because it really is her domain,” he says. Likewise, if you have an office, you could take the lead in what you want that room to look like. It’s not that the other person can’t have an opinion, but if one half functions in that space more often, they should get to lead the charge on the foundation of that area.

3. In Rooms You Share, Build Your Style on Common Ground

“But what about the bedroom?” Jonathan says. “You’re both sharing this bedroom—so who gets the final say?” In shared zones, Jonathan recommends finding some common ground. Start with a neutral or agreed-upon color scheme, and let that be the jumping off point for layering in accent pieces like pillows or window coverings within that palette. Try your best to let the process feel collaborative and get comfortable with compromise. You never know—the bedding they choose might end up being your favorite element in the room!

4. Be Open-Minded About Tastes and Styles

Conversation and working together is at the heart of creating a home you both love. Be open to the idea of changing tastes and needs, and embrace getting inspired together. “If you look at magazines and you see something that you really both like, and maybe it wasn’t either of your preference initially, understand that tastes can change,” Jonathan says. “Don’t feel so locked in on something that you have to have, because in five years you might have a different opinion anyway.”

5. Communicate Disagreements Gently

“If there’s something you know that they want, but you really, really don’t want it, have an opportunity to talk about those things together,” Jonathan says. It’s worth it to communicate calmly and gently if you disagree with a certain design choice or style—nobody wants to be criticized or mocked for their taste! Approach the conversation with love, and try to explain why you want to go in a different direction.

6. Get Creative With Pieces You Might Not Love

Jonathan distinctly recalls a chair that his father, Jim, loved in their house growing up—but Jonathan’s mother, Joanne, did not. Instead of getting rid of it, they refreshed it instead. They had a custom slipcover made for the chair that better fit the style of the room, so Jim got to keep his favorite seat and Joanne was able to customize it with a fabric she loved.

Try to find solutions like this for the pieces in your own home where you might have the same problem: re-stain the outdated console that was passed down from a loved one; repaint the catchall dish they just can’t part with; get a new cover for your favorite pillow. There’s so many ways to breathe new life into objects.

7. Get on the Same Page About Budget

This can be the hard part for a lot of couples and roommates—someone feels comfortable spending more, while the other wants to keep the budget more modest. Jonathan says he sees it frequently with a lot of his clients. But it’s important to get on the same page before you make any big decisions! Try meeting in the middle, and be honest with how much money you can really spend. There are savvy ways to save where you don’t have to sacrifice style to get the look you’re going for.

“Most items that you would purchase for a house, you could also find a more modest version of that without sacrificing the aesthetic,” Jonathan says. “So there’s a lot of real good deals you can find—replicas of even vintage pieces that you may like—so you don’t have to blow the budget.” You can find real gems at online vintage markets, secondhand antique stores, and a slurry of other furniture retailers at a great price.

8. Everyone Needs a Space That’s Their Own

Everyone deserves a little zone where they can unwind, relax, and call their own. Depending on how much space you have at home, this might look like a craft room, your home office, the garden in the backyard, or a small reading nook in the living room. It doesn’t have to be a full room or a grand study (though it can be if you have the space for it!). The most important thing is that the area feels like a comfortable place for you to recharge.

9. The Most Important Thing Is Your Relationship with One Another

“Biggest thing is, you love your partner; you love your friend; your roommate; whoever you live with—you want to make sure you have a great relationship living together. So just take the time upfront to think through the whole process, and it’ll be better for you down the road,” Jonathan says. At the end of the day, the place you live is home for you both, so it should feel like it for everyone!

If you’ve been keeping up with Drew and Jonathan’s YouTube channel, then you know that they recently started a new head-to-head game called House Stumpers, where they examine and try to guess the correct price of real home listings all over the United States (and sometimes, even around the globe). Now, they’re back with another batch of property listings that are even more jaw-dropping than before. With unbelievable prices, head-scratching design decisions, and even some famous properties sneaking their way into the mix (hello, Home Alone house!), this next batch of House Stumpers is certainly one worth watching.

Expect homes in charming Midwestern cities to chilly chalets in Canada, tiny houses worth big bucks, and even real haunted mansions up for sale. With just a few photos to look at and a minimal amount of details given, the Bros are really tapping into that real estate knowledge to get these prices right. Follow alongside the duo (and some friends, too!) as they check out these properties, explore the epic photos, and find out just how much they’re worth. Who knows—you might even do better than the Property Brothers! Just make sure to leave a comment on the YouTube video and let them know how you fared. (And tell us what city you want the Bros to look at next!)

Drew traded Jonathan for his friends at North Valley Group in this week’s House Stumpers, and it was nothing shy of fun and games galore! Curt, Spencer, Ryan, and Cody all jumped in to guess the prices. Their secret? All four of these guys are real estate agents, too, up in Chico, California, which is also the theme for these listings. Will Drew’s decades-long real estate prowess help him secure the win in a market he’s not familiar with? You’ll have to watch and see!

In this very merry special edition of House Stumpers, the Bros look into some familiar homes you might recognize from your favorite holiday movies. From Amanda Woods (Cameron Diaz)’s Los Angeles mansion in The Holiday to the iconic Home Alone house in Winnetka, Illinois, and the beloved London home in Love, Actually, these properties have won over our holiday hearts for so many reasons. Today, Drew and Jonathan are walking us through the interiors and showcasing what they’re worth on the market—all with some silly reindeer games along the way.

Enter if you dare! The homes this week are not for those who get easily spooked by ghost stories or ghoulish things that go bump in the night… Drew and Jonathan are exploring haunted mansions and historic homes with eerie lore that makes them prime real estate among the living and the dead. From the real house from Poltergeist to a haunted 11-suite inn and a Victorian mansion that’s been a frequent stop for ghost hunters, these properties are certainly to die for. So, would you ever buy a haunted house?

Saddle up, cowboys, and come down to the House Stumpers rodeo! This week, the Bros are exploring property listings in the Wild West, and there’s a ton of fun along the way. There’s cowboy trivia, fun Western quips from Drew and Jonathan, and exploring what a whopping $5.7M Western ranch includes (hint: there’s a rodeo arena involved… in the backyard). The Bros’ rancher roots really do show, too, because they were neck-in-neck the whole time! See which one came out on top, and don’t forget to catch our Chasing the West premiere on Hulu and HBO Max if you haven’t already!

First up, the Bros are taking a look at some snowy ski cabins across a variety of different places—from the beautiful Park City, Utah (where the average home price is a whopping $2.4 million), to the open lands of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and the serene Banff, Alberta, Canada (where their parents, Jim and Joanne Scott, first met!). Even though Drew and Jonathan weren’t super familiar with a couple of these places, in one of these home listings, Jonathan actually guessed the list price right on the nose. The first time in House Stumpers history! In the end, though, only one Bro could be the winner… Who do you think it was?

The Bros are heading to the Big Apple this week to take a look at some of the most sought-after neighborhoods in the country. From a bi-level in Williamsburg, Brooklyn to an apartment with exposed brick and a surprising amount of natural light in the beautiful Upper West Side of Manhattan, these listings are throwing Drew and Jonathan for a loop! New York City is a booming real estate market that extends across each of the five boroughs—but that makes guessing the price of these homes that much more difficult…

This week, Drew and Jonathan are heading to Sin City—the place they called home for 13 whole years! Yes, we all know Vegas for its casinos and nightlife, but between the blackjack tables and slot machines, you’ll also find that Vegas has a housing market worth betting on. The Bros are traveling all over the city, from a whopping $15.5M listing on a huge lot, to a more modestly-priced house with green carpeting. Drew and Jonathan have their work cut out for them this week! So, did the Bros hit the jackpot guessing these listing prices? You have to see for yourself!

The Bros are getting acquainted with a market they haven’t explored yet before—and it’s safe to say they were, well, stumped! We’re headed to the Windy City this week for a House Stumpers video that explored all that Chicago real estate had to offer, from a condo beaming with floor-to-ceiling windows of natural light, to a luxury townhouse in a gated community downtown complete with a workout room and a rooftop terrace. Drew and Jonathan are making it their mission to correctly guess the price of these first-place homes in the Second City, and it’s entertaining to watch them try, to say the least!

We’ve explored plenty of homes across the US that are larger than life, but this week, the Brothers are looking at houses with a more modest square footage… like, really modest. That’s right—they’re taking a swing at the prices of tiny homes! They might be small, but these little living spaces pack a punch. There’s a home with an outdoor shower (don’t worry, there’s an indoor one, too!); a tinyplex (aka a duplex, but make it miniature); and even a house that can be shipped right to your door. Take a look at these digs, and please, let us know: Would you ever try tiny home living?

To celebrate Canada Day on July 1, Drew and Jonathan are headed to their motherland to guess home listing prices and see who really knows the town the best. With their Mom and Linda both being from Toronto, and Drew and Jonathan growing up in Vancouver, it’s easy to assume they’ll be neck in neck guessing these Canadian house prices. (Fun fact: The first season of Property Brothers was actually filmed in Toronto, too!) Needless to say, the Brothers know the place well. However, with the staggering market in Toronto that makes prices vary widely from neighborhood to neighborhood, you might be surprised to see how the guys do this round… Grab a plate of poutine and let’s find out!

Drew and Linda have been busy decorating their house for the holidays with their little ones, Parker and Piper. And together as a family, they’ve turned their home into a nostalgic Christmas wonderland filled with beautiful handmade ornaments, decorations made by local artists, and vintage-inspired DIY decor to create a magical holiday home that feels as cozy as a cup of hot cocoa.

Today, they’re gifting us with a special holiday treat: a tour of their cheerful space! They took arts and crafts scraps and turned them into a beautiful handmade collage of Christmas decor that feels curated, warm, and personal. From their Christmas tree delightfully trimmed with handmade ornaments made by Parker, Piper and their cousins; to felted pieces that Linda crafted herself; to their creative advent-ure calendar wall strung with velvet bows and ribbons, Drew and Linda’s house puts the North Pole to shame.

You can watch the full video above to see all the details, but we’re unwrapping more of the details below, too.

Linda’s Creative Advent Calendar Wall

Linda took their built-in shelves and turned them into a full-wall DIY advent calendar, complete with festive cubbies filled with Christmas boxes and bows for each day of December. Inside, the little ones can find fun little books, hand-crafted pieces, nutcrackers, Elves on the Shelf, and more cute, festive surprises. “I love that Linda just completely curates this out of what we can find around the house,” Drew says.

The Wonderous Ceiling Christmas Train

A big showstopper is the Christmas train that runs around the ceiling of the living room. Parker and Piper both love trains, and it’s become a mainstay in their holiday decor. Drew and Parker even made a tradition of going to the train store around Christmas. This year, they bought two new train cars to hitch on. It took a bit of work and creativity to make their ceiling train idea come to fruition, but it’s become a standout Christmas decoration in their home that everyone loves.

“Everyone who walks in here, whether you’re 3 years old or you’re 80 years old, stops and gives a big, ‘Wow,’ when they see the train running around the ceiling,” Drew says.

Drew and Linda’s DIY Holiday Decoration Ideas

Homemade Ornaments

“A lot of the ornaments throughout have been handmade,” Drew says. Parker and Piper hung their adorable salt dough ornaments, and Linda even felted some of our favorite holiday characters (like the Abominable Snowman from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer!)

Repurposed Holiday Cards

“We save all the old holiday cards and we actually just cut them up into strips,” he says, “And then with the kids we actually tape them together and create long ring garland that we just put throughout the house. We love crafting in this house!”

Decorate With Leftover Ribbon

“We’re taking arts and crafts scraps and turning it into what we can,” Drew says. Linda uses ribbon scraps and pompoms to make bows to hang alongside the Christmas stockings, on their advent calendar wall, and throughout the house on garland and other decorations.

Look Back at Their 2024 Christmas Decorations

We know Parker loves his trains, so the advent calendar train was a huge hit! He could play with all the sweet advent boxes, hide little goodies in the compartments, and of course, play trains with his little sister. It was a simple but extra-special way to combine something he loves with the holiday spirit.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the Park House!

Jonathan and Zooey love to celebrate the holidays. In fact, Jonathan is basically the real-life version of Buddy the Elf this time of year. So it’s no surprise to hear they go all-out when it comes to their decorations. They fill their historical home to the brim with modern tinsel trees, stockings, sugarplums, and nutcrackers galore. And because you made the Nice list, Jonathan is giving you a sneak peek at all the merrymaking, as well as a few tips to turn your space into a winter wonderland.

They worked with Stephen Brown and his team at Glitterville Studios to create a whimsical Christmas dreamland throughout their home, and it turned out better than we could even imagine! “We love the color, we love the sparkle, we love the glitter,” Jonathan says. “We want something that feels fresh—our own personal holiday theme this year is velvet and bows or tartan and tinsel.” So, Stephen got to work crafting the holiday home of their dreams. Over five days (and countless hand-tied bows and handmade baubles!) the Glitterville team turned the Park House into a stunning winter wonderland. Watch our video to take a peek behind the scenes and see exactly how Stephen made the magic happen and keep reading for even more insider details.

Throughout their home, you’ll find bits and baubles of whimsical holiday decor that feels jovial and creative, with nostalgic elements that make it perfectly the Park House. They pull off the aesthetic by decking the halls with classic pieces—ornaments, garlands, and bows—but layering in unexpected items and decorations that have a bit of a twist, like oversized baubles, papier-mâché goodies, flying reindeer, and holiday characters with plenty of sparkle.

With so many adorable characters, themes, and holiday scenes around the house, Jonathan likes to keep it cohesive by sticking to a similar color story throughout. This way, it feels just like a journey through the North Pole. “I like it to be a little bit nostalgic, a little bit fun, with a whole lot of holiday spirit,” Jonathan says.

You know Dasher and Dancer, Prancer and Vixen… But did you know that Jonathan has all of our favorite reindeer floating right in his foyer? It’s true! Dashing over the entryway cabinet and up into the chandelier are all of Santa’s favorite sleigh creatures.

“We like to have different themes for different areas,” Jonathan says. You can see that on the variety of trees alone! Not to mention all the various beautiful Christmas vignettes throughout the home, like a sweet gumdrop fountain and the cutest après ski village atop the fireplace mantel.

Lindy Lin

Inside the living room tree, you’ll find handmade ski characters, hot cocoa mugs, holiday cabins, and of course, plenty of sparkle! Layering these different elements with bows, light bulbs, and different shaped objects creates a holiday display that makes a stunning impact.

“As a costume designer, which is where I started,” Stephen says. “We believe that anything can be a hat as long as you put it on your head—and anything can be a Christmas ornament as long as you can tie it to the tree!”

Lindy Lin
Lindy Lin

“The main event is our Christmas tree in the family room, because that’s where we do the family photos, that’s where we put the presents—that is the pièce de résistance,” Jonathan says. “And this is the most incredible tree.”

“Everything in moderation,” Stephen says. “Including moderation. My theory when decorating a tree is you put a lot on this side, until it leans that way—then you put a lot on this side, until it leans this way, and eventually it all evens out.” Stephen’s more-is-more approach to decorating is exactly what makes Jonathan’s home feel so merry and bright! The color, the texture, and the whimsy come together to create something truly magical.

Lindy Lin

Of course, we all know how much Jonathan and Zooey love their nutcracker collection, too. From the giant gumdrop nutcracker guarding the door to their handmade characters throughout the home, each one has its own personality and special kind of whimsy.

His favorite this year is a beautiful glimmering nutcracker that was actually hand-jeweled by Stephen at Glitterville. “He’s like the boss of all the nutcrackers—or should we say the diva,” Jonathan says.

Lindy Lin

Jonathan is also sharing tips on how to up the holiday spirit in your home this year, whether you want to refresh your usual wintertime decor or you’re getting ready to throw a holiday party to remember. His expert advice will help you transform your space into a magical festive wonderland—it’s his gift to you!

Don’t Be Afraid of Going Bold

“If you have a theme that you love, a color palette that you love, maybe the kids want to get involved picking out some of the colors—just have a little fun,” he says. “If you never go bold, you’re never going to create something truly incredible.” Whether it’s adding in more sparkle, combining colors you don’t use often, or going all-out with a festive theme, just make it your own. He adds, “Do something that’s going to take you out of your comfort zone, and do something truly magical this holiday season.”

Lindy Lin

Plan In Advance

”There are lots of different rules when decorating for the holidays, but of course as we know, rules are meant to be broken, so it really depends on your comfort level. One of the big ones is if you have little kids or big animals, you want to be careful with stuff they can knock over or that can shatter, like glass. We have a lot of glass, a lot of tinsel—things like that. However, we also have some ground rules, and the kids are really great at not knocking things over. Just make sure you plan in advance. The more robust you want your decorations to be, it’s going to take a little bit more work to make sure you get the right stuff.”

Combine Decor Old, New, and Hand-Made

“We reuse most of our Christmas decorations from year to year, and sometimes we’ll introduce something new, like our cute little gingerbread people. It’s nice to have a little bit of the old, a little bit of the new. Some of it is just made out of cardboard—you can do crafts with the kids and glitter it up a little bit to make something that’s a little whimsical, and then you can tie it in with your design. We love to see stuff that’s been made by the family and some that’s professionally made.”

Lindy Lin

Refresh Your Usual Scenes

“If you have something that’s really recognizable that you decorate with year after year, you can mix it up by using it a little differently,” Jonathan says. Take the solarium, for example. This year, Stephen took the colorful champagne bottles they used last year in the living room tree and strung them along the olive trees inside the solarium for a sweet and celebratory gumdrop-themed look that feels fresh and festive.

Lindy Lin

Layer Your Lights

“Different kinds of lights offer different dimension. You’ll see we have large C9 bulbs, but we also have LEDs that have a soft twinkle on and off, in addition to another LED that’s on all the time to provide illumination. We have three different strands of lights all tied together and it creates a beautiful illusion.”

Lindy Lin

Get Real

“If you have an artificial tree but you miss the smell of a real tree or how full it can look, here’s a trick: We went to a tree lot, and they gave us their trimmings from real trees. We stuffed those real branches into our tree. You can smell it—it smells great—and it adds a real natural element with the branches filling it out.”

Top With Tinsel

“…And don’t be afraid of tinsel! I don’t like it when it’s a blanket of tinsel tossed everywhere, it should be done in tasteful ways so you can still see your ornaments. I have all these beautiful glass ornaments and they look really classic, but I wanted to bring that whimsy with the tinsel, too.”

Drew and Jonathan love entertaining friends and family, especially around the holidays! From Jonathan and Zooey’s whimsical Christmas celebrations to Drew and Linda’s fun holiday decor, it’s easy to tell that the Bros love making the season feel magical. And right at the start of all the hustle and bustle comes Thanksgiving to unofficially kick off the holiday parties through the New Year. If you’re planning a Thanksgiving dinner to remember this season, then you’ll need some Thanksgiving table setting tips and decor ideas to make it happen. That’s where Drew and Jonathan come in.

Today, they’re sharing all their most helpful tablescape tips and ideas for a Turkey Day feast that goes off without a hitch. “Hosting Thanksgiving dinner for family, or even doing a Friendsgiving get-together, doesn’t have to be complicated and it doesn’t have to be overwhelming,” Jonathan says. Watch their video to see exactly how they craft a Thanksgiving dinner table, and read below for an inside look at all their best tricks.

Tip #1: Layer Your Table Linens

The easiest way to make your table look more upscale is by layering. You could place a runner down the center of the table (alone or over a tablecloth), style candles in varying heights, and add some seasonal greenery or vases of flowers. Or maybe instead, you layer standout placemats over a neutral tablecloth and pair them with unique linen napkins and holiday napkin rings. The options here are endless, really, and you can make it entirely yours. But a mix of elements will always make it more interesting.

Tip #2: Play With Height

When incorporating multiple layers of fabric, candles, greenery, and more, you want to add variation in height, too. Mix it up with taper candles, fresh florals, or other elements that add dimension to your tablescape.

Bonus: The order in which you style your table matters, too! You don’t want to have to reach around a bunch of tiny objects or rearrange the tablecloth just because you thought to add something in last-minute. So, after you’ve set up your base layer (tablecloth and/or runner), add in your tallest, most obtrusive items (like candles and vases). Once that’s done, you can go in with your smaller decor pieces (greenery, acorns, pumpkins) to complete the look.

Tip #3: Mix In Seasonal Foliage

An easy way to make your table look more timely for autumn is with foliage or greenery. You can use eucalyptus or magnolia in the fall, holly or winterberries in the winter, and so on. Randomly line the center of your table with fresh greenery (or realistic faux finds) between your candles, florals, and other decor for an easy natural look that makes an impact.

Tip #4: Avoid Too Much Symmetry—Make It Feel Organic!

When designing the center of your table, it doesn’t have to look uniform or symmetrical. Imperfection is perfection here! You want the table to feel organic and natural, not stiff and structured, so don’t stress too much. Mess around with the position of the centerpieces and additional decor, and get creative.

Tip #5: Plan for Platters and Serveware

If you’re doing a family-style meal where your dishes will sit in the center of the table, then make sure to plan around this when you’re designing your tablescape. Perhaps this means less decor in the center or more spread out taper candles, so you can fit all the food onto your table without making it feel crowded. If you’re going with a buffet-style dinner, however, you can set the platters on a separate table and have room to incorporate more decor on the main table.

Tip #6: Set Your Table the Day Before to Avoid Stress

One easy way to make party planning less hectic? Set your table the night before. Add in the live elements (like flowers and foliage) the morning of, but save yourself unnecessary trouble by styling the majority of your table the day before. This way, you’ll have more time to focus on the day-of stresses like cooking, cleaning, and prepping for guests’ arrival.

Tip #7: Customize Place Cards for Guests

Go the extra mile and personalize the table with custom place cards for everyone! You can seat people together who might not know each other well yet, and spark new conversations with folks you think would get along. Jonathan says that he and Zooey usually sit at opposite ends of the table so they have the opportunity to mingle with everyone and get conversation flowing. It’s whatever feels right to you and your crew!

Step right up, folks, don’t be shy! And prepare to witness the haunted circus-themed Halloween party of your dreams. Because when Jonathan’s planning a Halloween bash, you know it’s going to be good. Between the incredible circus festivities—like a haunted house filled with clowns, a cursed ticket booth, and a scary teddy bear claw machine—as well as the impressive Halloween decorations surrounding the whole yard, this was a spooky party to die for.

Jonathan dressed up as the Wizard from Wicked, donning a full green suit with a cane and grin that’s sure to thrill the masses as he guides us on a tour of his not-so-wicked but very exciting haunted house. In the front yard, he decorated top-to-bottom with Halloween inflatables, creepy characters, and an abundance of big top decor that makes the place feel like it’s pulled right out of an eerie circus. Step into the realm of the three-ring festival of frights!

Welcome to the Circus!

Come one, come all, and feast your eyes on a carnival unlike any other. At Jonathan’s circus-themed Halloween bash, everyone is ready for a frightfully good time. With scary good decorations, a well-designed haunted house, and of course, some incredible DIY costumes, it’s easy to see why the party was such a success.

Jonathan and Zooey wanted to create this haunted Halloween circus as a celebration for their whole community. Not too scary but not too sweet, the spooky circus theme was actually Elsie’s idea! She wanted a creepy carnival, so Jonathan and Zooey went full-speed ahead to make the party exactly like Elsie was hoping for: a little creepy, just enough scary, and absolutely fun for everyone.

Decorations, Props, and Actors

As you head into the haunted circus, you’ll be met with the likes of shivering clowns, actors dressed as circus jesters jumping out from behind hidden doors, and a slurry of haunted Halloween decorations that are sure to fright.

“I love to personalize the decorations with anything the family loves, and Charlie is a huge fan of Jaws, so we had to have a haunted Megalodon,” Jonathan says. Alongside these creatures of the night, Jonathan filled the yard with plenty of other scary features, like eerie animatronics and circus-themed props to make the show go off in the most spectacularly spooky way.

The Secret Hosting Hideout

If you know Jonathan and Zooey, then you know they love hosting parties, events, dinners, and the like for all their friends and family. But they also don’t like to be wasteful. So instead of going and buying new, single-use items for every event, they built out a storage shed where they can stash all of their party equipment year-round. Tables and chairs, serving platters, dishes, garbage cans, goodie bags, you name it—it all fits into an organized space where they can grab what they need and reuse mainstay items for any celebration.

Jonathan visited the Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios recently, and he had a spooky good time! He ran around with the ghouls and goblins of iconic scary movies and TV series to show us the theme park’s best haunted houses, and they certainly didn’t disappoint. He starts on the Terror Tram and continues to take you through a menacing walkway of Blumhouse villains like the killers from The Purge, the Babyface Killer from Happy Death Day and Jason Bateman from Psycho. He finishes at a haunted house filled with Latin American myths and legends from Monstruos. All in all, Halloween Horror Nights was filled with thrills and chills!

Throughout each haunted room, Jonathan is giving us a peek at the monstrous mayhem. He’s even rating each attraction, based on four key elements: the scare factor; build-out; unexpectedness; and creepy characters. Scary movie fans, you’re definitely going to want to see this! These horror movie house tours are sure to fright and delight. You can even visit the haunted house show yourself at Universal Studios Hollywood from now through Saturday, November 2. But be warned: Scary sights and creature features ahead!

Terror Tram

Jonathan stepped aboard the Terror Tram without looking back. He’s dropped off where he can walk through horror movie sets, all while being tormented by movie villains, monsters, and other scary creatures. But the fun has just begun…

Terrifier

At the Terrifier Fun House, expect to see Art the Clown in his element—horrifying guests with his twisted torture chamber of madness. This one threw Jonathan for a loop! It was seriously spooky, earning almost a perfect score in his haunted house rating.

Poltergeist

When Jonathan entered the house from Poltergeist, he and his whole crew were eek-ed out. From the creepy hand reaching out of the TV static to the realistic reenactment of the kitchen scene, this haunted house made everyone a little jumpy. After all, what’s more terrifying than linoleum floors?!

Did you catch Drew and Jonathan’s Halloween decorations in 2024? There were definitely some tricks… And a whole lot of treats! To celebrate the unofficial start of spooky season—it’s finally October, after all—the Bros are taking a look back at their Halloween parties, their epic costumes, and all the finishing touches that made their outdoor Halloween decorations so spectacular last year.

They went all-out on just about everything they could to make the day magical for friends, family, and neighbors. From Jonathan’s scary animatronics in his backyard haunted houses to Drew’s Halloween light display that wowed, the Bros took Halloween to the next level! Today, they’re looking back at some of their most exciting moments from their monster mash. Watch the full video to get the scoop on all the details, including decorating tips, Halloween costume insight, and a bewitching hack for kids looking to trade in their Halloween candy for something even sweeter.

Jonathan’s Eerie Haunted House

When Jonathan and Zooey were planning their Halloween party for the kids, they wanted to make it a ton of fun for the little ones and their parents, too. They set up a spooky haunted house in the backyard with different zones inside—an Addams family area in the front with cobwebs and LED candlelight; mummies and ghostly figures in the back; a creepy carnival with sinister clowns; a mad scientist lab; and more. It was just enough frightening and fun.

Lights and Projections for a Spooky Display

Both Drew and Jonathan took their outdoor light displays to another level. Jonathan has more trees around his house, so he used smart lights from Twinkly to display an array of Halloween colors like purple and orange that danced around in a fun pattern. That way, when Halloween is over or it’s finally time for the winter holidays, he can change the lights to display whatever pattern or color he wants right off his phone, so he never even has to take the string lights down. Hello, decor hack!

“You had lights, but I had killer projections,” Drew says to Jonathan. We can’t argue with that! Drew used a system that mapped the front of his house and created a custom Halloween light display based off the architectural features. You could see monsters coming in and out of the windows, creepy crawly spiders along the facade, a haunted forest with lightening, and so much more.

The Very Best Halloween Costumes

We know they’ve have had some incredible Halloween costumes over the years, but it’ll be hard to beat the 2024 ensembles from Drew and Jonathan! Drew, Linda, Parker, and Piper dressed up as characters from Where the Wild Things Are, with Parker as Max; Piper as a mini Max (adorable!); and Drew and Linda as a couple of the wild things. Jonathan and Zooey don’t always go as a typical couples costume, and oftentimes choose their own outfits or funny characters to dress up as for an unlikely duo! In 2024, Jonathan went as Wolverine (complete with an incredible styling team that did his hair, makeup, and a custom suit), and Zooey went as Angie from The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City (iconic!).

Have You Heard of the Switch Witch?

If you know the Tooth Fairy, then you should know about her long-lost cousin, the Switch Witch. The Switch Witch is a witch who comes in the middle of the night on Halloween and swaps out all the kids’ candy for one toy that they really want. The little ones get to decide what they’d rather get—all they have to do is leave a note for the Switch Witch with their request.

Drew is back with another epic home tour, and this week, he’s giving us an inside look at one of the best-kept secrets in Pasadena. The Blinn House is a historic Prairie-style home with architectural features that truly wow, and an attention to detail that can’t be matched.

Prairie-style architecture originated in Chicago (developed by a group of architects including Frank Lloyd Wright) and was popularized in the Midwest in the 20th century. It emphasizes horizontal lines, with a focus on celebrating the wide-open landscape of the American Midwest. The Blinn House is the only Prairie-style house designed by George W. Maher west of the Mississippi River.

Completed in 1906, the Blinn House was originally home to the Blinn family—husband and wife Edmund and Kate Blinn, as well as their four children. They snowbirded in Pasadena to escape the harsh Chicago winters. But the Blinns eventually decided to make the move permanent, buying up two plots of land next to each other so they could build their big dream home in California.

Small Details, Big Impact

The fixation on detail is abundant in the Blinn House. Throughout both the interior and exterior, you see a callback to these beautiful wisteria vines that line the garden. From the repeating pattern of the wisteria vines in the art glass (in the windows lining the home, the ornate light fixtures, and the fireplace facade) to the broken arch motif (in the archways, furniture, windows, and the staircase banister), there is a special, intentional focus on harmony within the space.

George W. Maher is credited with the design philosophy known as Motif-Rhythm Theory, which puts emphasis on a particular decorative element or geometric shape—like the wisteria vines and broken arches, in the case of the Blinn House—to create a cohesive design, repeating it throughout the building in different forms such as the architecture, ornamentation, or furniture.

The Beauty of Historic Homes

“I think things were built better back in the day,” Drew says. “They were built stronger, they were built smarter in many ways…The history of a house is what makes it so cool.” In the case of the Blinn House, the home was built with an emphasis on both artistic craft and functionality—down to the waterproofed drain spouts on the sleeping porch. It’s all of these small details, along with the stories and the history behind their inception, that make historic homes so complex and incredible to dig into.

The kitchen can become a zone of pure chaos if we don’t keep things in order, and that’s true no matter how big or small your family is. With all the ingredients and cooking supplies to organize; produce and vegetables to keep fresh; and leftovers to keep track of, it’s easy to get overwhelmed in your everyday routine. But a clean kitchen can make your whole day easier. If there’s one family we trust to help us keep our cooking space neat and tidy, it’s Jonathan and Zooey—after all, we all know Zooey is an excellent chef, and The Park House kitchen is one of their favorite spots in the home. So today, Jonathan is walking us through his best and easiest tips for keeping your kitchen organized.

Getting everything organized isn’t so much the hard part here—it’s more so keeping it that way. We all know how much baskets and bins can do to help keep supplies tidy. But how do you make sure you mitigate the chaos before it starts? Jonathan is answering all these questions and more. Plus, he even has some helpful hacks on making use of every square inch of your kitchen. No matter how small the footprint, there’s always a way to make your space work better for you.

1. Keep Your Fridge In Order

Jonathan and Zooey try to keep their refrigerator organized at all times, with everything having a designated zone: Drinks on top, dairy in the middle, one shelf specifically for leftovers, and more. They make clusters with items that are usually used together, too. Bonus: Their fridge has cameras inside, so if they’re at the grocery store, they can look at the video to see exactly what they’re missing.

2. Make Use of Wasted Space

In areas where there’s usually just filler wood or awkward empty space (like the section above or beside your fridge, or a slim pocket between cabinets), consider adding in creative storage solutions. Jonathan has a hidden pull-out storage cabinet next to his refrigerator, for example, that houses all of their to-go containers, parchment paper, and other helpful supplies. He also added secondary drawers to their deeper kitchen drawers to make use of the available space that would have gone unused otherwise.

3. Separation Is Key

Use drawer dividers and cabinet organizers to separate items and keep things orderly. Having a place for everything makes clutter less possible. “It’s easier to know when and where to put things back when you have compartments for all of those things,” he says. “You can open any drawer that we have and it’s the same thing—we try and keep everything totally organized.”

4. Make It Work for the Cook

“No one knows the kitchen better than you do,” Jonathan says. “How do you use the kitchen—when you’re standing at the sink, where do you like things to be when you’re reaching for them?” Jonathan also recommends that if you have a primary cook in the household, then they should have the final say of where things go. After all, they’re the ones in there doing the hard work!

5. Set Up a System to Prevent Pantry Chaos

“The bigger the family, the bigger the meals, the more important a good pantry is,” Jonathan says. In the pantry especially, it’s so important to squeeze storage into any space possible. He recommends making everything easy to get to and easy to fill—using baskets and jars is helpful here for that reason. “Once you have a well-organized pantry, it is a lot easier to maintain,” he says, “The reason most people’s pantries turn into total chaos is because they’ve never set up that system.”

6. Take It One Step at a Time

Feeling a little overwhelmed by all the pressure? “You are not alone—everybody gets overwhelmed by storage and organization,” Jonathan says. “Just bite off what you can chew, a little bit at a time. So for example, in your pantry, maybe you start by organizing the drawers—make that a weekend project. Once you’ve got that down, you can start working on the shelves.”

If you haven’t heard yet, Jonathan, Zooey, and the kiddos have three new fluffy family members! They brought home Dove, Poppy, and Pickle earlier this year and instantly, the whole family fell in love. They adore their new fur babies! And as every cat owner knows, when you first bring home your new kitties, you might need to make some adjustments so they have everything they need to feel comfortable. This includes cat trees and cat beds, the right slow or automatic cat feeders and water fountains, litter boxes, and of course, plenty of toys.Jonathan and Zooey have made plenty of fun new additions to the house to get the cats acquainted—including a homemade catio.

Jonathan knew that the cats loved watching the birds and wildlife, and getting fresh air, but he wanted to make sure they were safe from danger while they explored outdoors. Being an expert in all things home renovation and building, he knew he wanted to make something special for them. A catio is basically an enclosed outdoor patio made smaller, just for furry friends. It can include things like perches, scratching posts, ramps, cat grass, and more. Jonathan thought of everything: From a cat tunnel to an easy-to-clean drainage plate, plenty of platforms for them to climb, and even some sneaky ways to make the structure blend into their house exterior (more on that below). Keep reading for his best tips!

Tips and Must-Haves for How to Build a Catio

Materials matter: The structure itself is the most important part here, so make sure your materials are not only sound, but installed correctly! Jonathan wanted everything to be safe, secure, and stylish, so he called his friend Alan Breslauer (widely known as @catioguy) to help customize and build the perfect catio for Poppy, Dove, and Pickle. “It’s built well, it’s built to last, and the cats absolutely love it,” Jonathan says.

Make sure it’s accessible: For the cats, of course, but also for the humans! You want to be able to get in there and clean easily. They added a human-sized door to the exterior so it’s easy to pop in and wipe things down as needed. Jonathan also included a metal pan underneath the structure for easy draining when they hose down the catio.

Consider a cat tunnel: Jonathan and Zooey wanted to be sure the cats had a way out onto the catio directly from Zooey’s office, since they love hanging out by her during the day. So, they decided to build a cat tunnel! From Zooey’s office, through Jonathan’s, and out onto the catio, the three kitties have an easy, fun way onto their enclosure. The tunnel doors even have actual functioning doorknobs so Jonathan and Zooey can control when the cats can go in and out.

Bonus: Painting the mesh wire black will make it almost vanish visually, which will help the structure blend in nicely with the rest of the house!

Drew and Jonathan sat down with their parents, Jim and Joanne, to page through their family scrapbook and relive the memories of early life on their ranch in the Rockies. They talk everything from their first time riding a horse (they were younger than a year old on Mom’s hip!), to their mischief and silly teenage pranks, the family traditions that shaped them, and how growing up on their ranch gave them invaluable life lessons that they’ll never forget.

It’s not just about memories on the ranch, but also the ways the West shaped Drew and Jonathan. They talk through the Cowboy Code (you’ll see what we mean when you watch the video) and the importance of hard work that comes with ranch life. And in their new show, Chasing the West, the Bros are helping other families make the move out to the countryside with dreams of living out their rancher dreams, too.

Drew and Jonathan owe much of their hardworking nature to growing up in the Canadian Rockies. But what happened on that ranch is the real story—between caring for animals, learning what it means to keep up an acreage, having to put effort into everything you do to take care of your home and your family… The Bros learned a lot. Here are some of the moments that made them who they are today.

Mischief and Milestones

Twin-Tricking

Classic twin stuff right here! “Do you remember how many times we used to try and trick you by swapping outfits?” Drew asks.

“And as teenagers, you tried to trick each other with dating,” Joanne says. “And the thing was, you were doing it with another set of twins!” Silly, mischievous moments like these were abundant throughout their entire upbringing—and even now, the Bros are still trying to prank each other whenever they get the chance. What else are siblings for?

Traditions and Values

Homemade Halloween Costumes

Drew and Jonathan have always loved the holidays, both Christmas and Halloween! Growing up, they’d make their own DIY Halloween costumes—everything from spooky characters to silly duos to funny Halloween costumes—and even still, they’ve come up with some incredible costumes in their adult life, too.

Christmas Caroling Through the Years

Alongside cozy fall-season festivities, the Bros, JD, Joanne, and Jim also loved to go Christmas caroling together. “We still go caroling on Christmas Eve,” Jim says.

“My favorite time of year, though, is when we would start playing the Bing Crosby Christmas album,” Jonathan says. “And that was officially Christmas.” Nowadays, Drew and Jonathan celebrate the season in full color at their own homes to embrace the holiday spirit Property Brothers-style (you have to take a peek at Jonathan and Zooey’s whimsical Christmas decorations and Drew and Linda’s festive holiday home if you haven’t yet!).

Pivotal Moments

Horses and Karate

“When I think back to our childhood, the two big things that stand out to me were the horses and karate,” Drew says. “Because that took up a lot of our time.” Joanne even took karate lessons, too!

The Bros’ First Business

“You guys have a fantastic work ethic to this day,” Joanne says, “and it all started with this business: JAM Enterprises.” That is, John Andrew Mom Enterprises—the crafty coat hanger business Drew, Jonathan, and Joanne started when the Bros were just kids.

The Cowboy Code

As kids, one of the most important things Drew and Jonathan learned from their father was the Code of the West, also known as the Cowboy Code. It’s a set of mantras and reminders of what it means to be a cowboy, and the way you conduct yourself proudly and earnestly as one. “Live each day with courage”; “Always finish what you start”; and “When you make a promise, keep it” are just a few of these rules that made Drew and Jonathan who they are today.

“I think that’s the allure for city people who want to live that ranch lifestyle, or the farm lifestyle,” Jonathan says, “They want to get out of the city where you just have some breathing room… And the cowboy code, there’s something beautiful about it.”
