When Jonathan and Zooey first toured their New York City apartment, it was anything but love at first sight. “I’ve always had the ability to walk into a space and imagine what it could be instantly,” Jonathan says. “But we had our work cut out for us with this place.” Popcorn ceilings; stark white walls; zero personality—that’s not the description you’d expect to hear for Jonathan and Zooey’s dream apartment. But through the weathered walls and crooked layout, they saw a vision of what the space could be. And it was going to have to be a full-scale renovation unlike any other.

“The most important thing for Zooey and me is that a space tells a story, and truly represents its owners,” Jonathan says. “We don’t like boring. We wanted everything from the custom furniture to the wallpaper to the lighting fixtures to feel exquisite.”

Sure, they basically had to start from scratch crafting their perfectly detailed maximalist interior from top to bottom: restructuring the layout; adding in elaborate millwork and custom plaster molding; curating a design scheme that balanced an array of texture, color, pattern, form, and sheen; and an endless laundry list of other to-dos in order to make it into the home of their dreams. But they knew they could turn this blank slate into something truly remarkable. And the challenge was half the fun.

So today, Jonathan is taking us on an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour, walking us through his style secrets and the backstory on all the work that went into renovating their remarkable New York City duplex. You can watch the full video above to get the scoop on everything you want to know, and explore more of the stories behind the design below.

Designing Over a Blank Slate

Transforming the early 1900s turn-of-the-century apartment into the ornate, maximalist family home they wanted it to be was no easy feat. Especially considering the unit itself was more like a dull 1980s office space than a beautiful Victorian or early Craftsman. Jonathan and Zooey wanted to infuse historic character back into the space and recreate the Old World charm that had been lost along the way. With soaring 15-foot ceilings and large-scale windows with natural light typically unheard of in New York City, they knew they wanted to make the home something extraordinary.

While the couple was renovating their Los Angeles home, the Park House, they wanted the 1930s Georgian revival to feel like a true bonding of their style and an homage to the original architect, Gerard Colcord. It was their first home together, and it’s a spectacular display of their taste. “LA was a real learning experience for us. It’s the first place we renovated together as a couple, and we learned a lot,” Jonathan says. But in their NYC apartment, they wanted to go bolder; be more daring in their design. Elaborate pattern mixing. Hand-drawn murals. Ornate embroidered wallpaper. “We wanted to push the boundaries of what we did in our Los Angeles home, and include even more handcrafted elements, vintage pieces, and artisanal touches,” Jonathan says.

Finding the Right Co-Designer

The Manhattan duplex is a testament to Jonathan and Zooey’s unique taste and their commitment to family—a celebration of their relationship and the special parts of it that make it their own. But to pull off a project of this scale while living on the opposite coast, they needed someone local who they could trust to manage critical components when they weren’t there. They found the perfect partner in renowned designer Young Huh. “I spoke with Young and we instantly hit it off,” Jonathan says. “Her attention to detail and her love for elegant, traditional design was exactly what we were looking for.”

Young understood their vision completely. “They wanted to incorporate a sense of history and beautiful decoration and the top request was that there be nothing modern,” she says. “Both of them love color and are fearless in exploring pattern and creativity.”

Together, Jonathan and Zooey collaborated with Young and spent nearly five years crafting their artisanal New York City pied-à-terre. But all that time and hard work was more than well worth it. “Collaborating with them was a complete joy. There was so much good creative energy flowing between us,” Young says.

It’s All In the Details

Lively patterns, romantic lighting, moody colors—every element mattered to Jonathan and Zooey. “Here, we decided that all of the fabrics would tell a story—all of the patterns and prints would really grab you when you walked in,” Jonathan says. “And so you’ll see that here—every decision and every room has something to say.”

“They have an incredibly keen eye for design and style,” Young says. “And no one, absolutely no one has Jonathan’s eagle eye for detail. He can detect if something is off an eighth of an inch with just his eye! That was pretty awe-inspiring.”

That “eagle eye” made all the difference, as each room now has its own sense of emotion and story. “When you walk into the entry you are surrounded by joy,” Young says. “The kitchen, living room, and dining room express conviviality and verve. There is a good deal of romance in the outdoor terraces, and their books, art, and decorative objects have a lot of meaning.”

But the handcrafted detail doesn’t stop at the interior. Their three private terraces each have markedly distinct designs, from the kids’ playful elephant topiary to the beautiful latticework in their French-inspired garden outside the living room. They wanted to hint to Los Angeles here, and make the exterior areas of the apartment feel just as lush as the interior.

Traditional Design, Modern Upgrades

Jonathan and Zooey knew they wanted to go with a more intricate, traditional design when it came to their style choices, but they also wanted to incorporate modern-day upgrades when it came to functional items in the house. Combining the two took some creative thinking, but they were able to work with Young to find pieces that hit everything they wanted, both stylistically and functionally.

Take the kitchen, for example. Jonathan and Zooey knew they wanted upscale and high-quality appliances from retailers like JennAir, but found a way to seamlessly blend them into the design with cabinetry. And the oven resembles an antique artisan fixture—between the patina on the copper detailing on the range and hood to the striking matte black finish—for the perfect combination of function and form.

But it’s not just the kitchen that gets the fun and functional treatment. Their entertaining spaces also blend their family’s favorite activities with thoughtful design. There are automatic projector screens that descend from the living room ceilings for cozy movie nights without a bulky TV set disrupting the aesthetic. A custom karaoke setup is hidden in a beautiful cabinet, but remains easy to pull out at every dinner party or night in with the kids. And the standout piece is a beautiful grand piano that Zooey can record songs on for Jonathan to hear back later.

“I love Zooey’s music, and coming home to hear her playing. Having a player piano where she can record songs that I can listen to while she’s away makes that even easier,” Jonathan says. “Some of my favorite She & Him songs for her to play are ‘I Thought I Saw Your Face Today’, ‘Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?’ and ‘I Could’ve Been Your Girl’.”

There’s also plenty of sleek hidden tech that helps keep their home operating at all levels while they’re away.  “I made sure to incorporate some helpful technologies we love about our LA house into our NYC place, like smart panels and AI-driven leak detection with auto-shut off,” Jonathan says. “Going back and forth between our homes on either coast, we don’t want to be susceptible to any kind of damage while we’re gone, so I can remotely monitor everything from our security to our energy and water use. And the nice thing is it’s all hidden away, so you wouldn’t even notice the tech is there.”

Lighting Takes Effect

Jonathan, Zooey, and Young all champion the effect lighting has on a space (especially with Zooey’s father being a distinguished cinematographer). They took their time combing through antique stores, furniture markets, and lighting designers like Visual Comfort & Co. to find the perfect fixtures for the space—like the stunning Murano glass chandelier in the dining room, the floral ironwork pendant in the foyer, or the beautiful vine clad sconces in the family room.

“Lighting is incredibly important. We knew that we wanted to have some really grand statement fixtures,” he says. “But with the smaller footprint of the apartment, we wanted to ensure that it still felt balanced, and there weren’t too many fixtures clashing with one another. To prevent that, we mixed things up—so you’ll see pendants, chandeliers, and sconces all playing their part to make it a more interesting lighting design.”

Home Sweet Home

Today, Jonathan and Zooey finally have that perfect home base that’s as unique and exciting as the city itself. They put their all into turning the apartment into a place that felt like them: bold, colorful, romantic, and interesting.

“We don’t like a boring, modern space,” Jonathan says. “I love it when somebody says to me, ‘I have never seen something like that before.’ That is music to my ears.”

Achieving the vision they originally set out for was not easy—but through patience, planning, and creativity, they were able to curate a metropolitan haven unlike any other.

Bonus: Maximalist Design Tips from Young

Maximalist design can be so rewarding—but making a variety of colors, patterns, and finishes all marry together to look intentional and curated can feel like a tall order, especially if you don’t know where to begin. “Start by picking your favorite colors, fabrics, and finishes, and put them together on a table,” Young says. “Do they all look good together and do they make you feel excited? Try to imagine how those items will look in the room.”

Creating mood boards and comparing fabric samples, wallpaper squares, and paint chips are all great ways to get the creative juices flowing—but ultimately, curating a maximalist design in your own home comes down to creating a space that feels authentically you. There’s no formula for your unique personality, so go with what makes your space feel like yours. “You just have to love all the things you choose together,” Young says.

If you’ve been keeping up with Drew and Jonathan’s YouTube channel, then you know that they recently started a new head-to-head game called House Stumpers, where they examine and try to guess the correct price of real home listings all over the United States (and sometimes, even around the globe). Now, they’re back with another batch of property listings that are even more jaw-dropping than before. With unbelievable prices, head-scratching design decisions, and even some famous properties sneaking their way into the mix (hello, Home Alone house!), this next batch of House Stumpers is certainly one worth watching.

Expect homes in charming Midwestern cities to chilly chalets in Canada, tiny houses worth big bucks, and even real haunted mansions up for sale. With just a few photos to look at and a minimal amount of details given, the Bros are really tapping into that real estate knowledge to get these prices right. Follow alongside the duo (and some friends, too!) as they check out these properties, explore the epic photos, and find out just how much they’re worth. Who knows—you might even do better than the Property Brothers! Just make sure to leave a comment on the YouTube video and let them know how you fared. (And tell us what city you want the Bros to look at next!)

Drew traded Jonathan for his friends at North Valley Group in this week’s House Stumpers, and it was nothing shy of fun and games galore! Curt, Spencer, Ryan, and Cody all jumped in to guess the prices. Their secret? All four of these guys are real estate agents, too, up in Chico, California, which is also the theme for these listings. Will Drew’s decades-long real estate prowess help him secure the win in a market he’s not familiar with? You’ll have to watch and see!

In this very merry special edition of House Stumpers, the Bros look into some familiar homes you might recognize from your favorite holiday movies. From Amanda Woods (Cameron Diaz)’s Los Angeles mansion in The Holiday to the iconic Home Alone house in Winnetka, Illinois, and the beloved London home in Love, Actually, these properties have won over our holiday hearts for so many reasons. Today, Drew and Jonathan are walking us through the interiors and showcasing what they’re worth on the market—all with some silly reindeer games along the way.

Enter if you dare! The homes this week are not for those who get easily spooked by ghost stories or ghoulish things that go bump in the night… Drew and Jonathan are exploring haunted mansions and historic homes with eerie lore that makes them prime real estate among the living and the dead. From the real house from Poltergeist to a haunted 11-suite inn and a Victorian mansion that’s been a frequent stop for ghost hunters, these properties are certainly to die for. So, would you ever buy a haunted house?

Saddle up, cowboys, and come down to the House Stumpers rodeo! This week, the Bros are exploring property listings in the Wild West, and there’s a ton of fun along the way. There’s cowboy trivia, fun Western quips from Drew and Jonathan, and exploring what a whopping $5.7M Western ranch includes (hint: there’s a rodeo arena involved… in the backyard). The Bros’ rancher roots really do show, too, because they were neck-in-neck the whole time! See which one came out on top, and don’t forget to catch our Chasing the West premiere on Hulu and HBO Max if you haven’t already!

First up, the Bros are taking a look at some snowy ski cabins across a variety of different places—from the beautiful Park City, Utah (where the average home price is a whopping $2.4 million), to the open lands of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and the serene Banff, Alberta, Canada (where their parents, Jim and Joanne Scott, first met!). Even though Drew and Jonathan weren’t super familiar with a couple of these places, in one of these home listings, Jonathan actually guessed the list price right on the nose. The first time in House Stumpers history! In the end, though, only one Bro could be the winner… Who do you think it was?

The Bros are heading to the Big Apple this week to take a look at some of the most sought-after neighborhoods in the country. From a bi-level in Williamsburg, Brooklyn to an apartment with exposed brick and a surprising amount of natural light in the beautiful Upper West Side of Manhattan, these listings are throwing Drew and Jonathan for a loop! New York City is a booming real estate market that extends across each of the five boroughs—but that makes guessing the price of these homes that much more difficult…

This week, Drew and Jonathan are heading to Sin City—the place they called home for 13 whole years! Yes, we all know Vegas for its casinos and nightlife, but between the blackjack tables and slot machines, you’ll also find that Vegas has a housing market worth betting on. The Bros are traveling all over the city, from a whopping $15.5M listing on a huge lot, to a more modestly-priced house with green carpeting. Drew and Jonathan have their work cut out for them this week! So, did the Bros hit the jackpot guessing these listing prices? You have to see for yourself!

The Bros are getting acquainted with a market they haven’t explored yet before—and it’s safe to say they were, well, stumped! We’re headed to the Windy City this week for a House Stumpers video that explored all that Chicago real estate had to offer, from a condo beaming with floor-to-ceiling windows of natural light, to a luxury townhouse in a gated community downtown complete with a workout room and a rooftop terrace. Drew and Jonathan are making it their mission to correctly guess the price of these first-place homes in the Second City, and it’s entertaining to watch them try, to say the least!

We’ve explored plenty of homes across the US that are larger than life, but this week, the Brothers are looking at houses with a more modest square footage… like, really modest. That’s right—they’re taking a swing at the prices of tiny homes! They might be small, but these little living spaces pack a punch. There’s a home with an outdoor shower (don’t worry, there’s an indoor one, too!); a tinyplex (aka a duplex, but make it miniature); and even a house that can be shipped right to your door. Take a look at these digs, and please, let us know: Would you ever try tiny home living?

To celebrate Canada Day on July 1, Drew and Jonathan are headed to their motherland to guess home listing prices and see who really knows the town the best. With their Mom and Linda both being from Toronto, and Drew and Jonathan growing up in Vancouver, it’s easy to assume they’ll be neck in neck guessing these Canadian house prices. (Fun fact: The first season of Property Brothers was actually filmed in Toronto, too!) Needless to say, the Brothers know the place well. However, with the staggering market in Toronto that makes prices vary widely from neighborhood to neighborhood, you might be surprised to see how the guys do this round… Grab a plate of poutine and let’s find out!

You might have heard about the iconic Rose Bowl college football game that happens every New Year’s Day, but did you know that there’s a rich history behind the celebration that includes a gorgeous Pasadena mansion overflowing with complex architectural details and historic memorabilia? Today, Jonathan is taking a tour of the extraordinary Wrigley Mansion in Pasadena—also known as the Tournament House—and he’s bringing us along for the ride.

In our video, you’ll see up close the ornate detail in each room, from the beautiful burlwood features to the foiled wallpaper and stunning ceilings. Come explore the history behind the home with Jonathan, and watch our playlist here for more historic and exclusive house tours.

Tournament House History and Architecture

The property was originally a winter home for William Wrigley Jr. and his wife Ada Wrigley—as in, the Chicago Cubs’s Wrigley Field and Wrigley Chewing Gum. The 1914 estate is now known as the Wrigley Mansion or Tournament House. It became the permanent headquarters for the Tournament of Roses in 1958.

The Italian renaissance-style mansion is filled with ornate detailing. The architect, George Lawrence Stimson, was known for his focus on interesting ceilings and highly detailed features—all of which makes this home a truly one-of-a-kind property.

Inside Wrigley Mansion’s Architectural Details

Ornate Woodwork

The fantastic history begins right at the entrance, with a massive 400-pound Honduran mahogany front door that’s original to 1914. Beautiful carvings and artistic details fill the door’s facade and make it an art piece all its own. Inside the home itself, you’ll find gorgeous Romanian Circassian walnut, burlwood paneling, now extinct crotch mahogany walls, and more picturesque wooden features.

Interesting Ceilings

Inside the home, you’ll find ceilings that wow. “All of this detail was hand-done, and it’s pretty incredible,” Jonathan says. “When you tour our home, you’ll see that every room has a different ceiling, different beams—coffered, cove, barrel. In fact, the living room here has an incredible shallow barrel which at the time was not very common…it’s subtle, but so impactful.”

Gracie Foiled Wallpaper

“There are a handful of Wrigley homes across the country, and every one of the family members had a foil paper to signify the foil that wrapped Wrigley’s gum,” Jonathan says. It’s a special nod to legacy that each Wrigley family member can share, no matter where they live. In Tournament House, the hand-painted foil wallpaper was created by the Gracie company, and features gorgeous scenic florals, landscapes, and traditional motifs.

Behind the Pasadena Tournament of Roses

According to the Tournament of Roses site, the event first started as “a small effort by Pasadena’s distinguished Valley Hunt Club to promote the city’s charm and beautiful weather.” But it’s since become a tradition in America’s New Year’s Day celebrations.

“The Tournament of Roses encompasses everything. It’s the parade, the floats, the flowers, the football game,” Jonathan says. It’s a New Year’s celebration that’s been around since 1890, with the parade featuring elaborate, beautiful floats (made entirely of natural materials!), marching bands and equestrian groups, and of course, ending with the iconic Rose Bowl football game that’s held after the parade is over.

Drew and Linda have been busy decorating their house for the holidays with their little ones, Parker and Piper. And together as a family, they’ve turned their home into a nostalgic Christmas wonderland filled with beautiful handmade ornaments, decorations made by local artists, and vintage-inspired DIY decor to create a magical holiday home that feels as cozy as a cup of hot cocoa.

Today, they’re gifting us with a special holiday treat: a tour of their cheerful space! They took arts and crafts scraps and turned them into a beautiful handmade collage of Christmas decor that feels curated, warm, and personal. From their Christmas tree delightfully trimmed with handmade ornaments made by Parker, Piper and their cousins; to felted pieces that Linda crafted herself; to their creative advent-ure calendar wall strung with velvet bows and ribbons, Drew and Linda’s house puts the North Pole to shame.

You can watch the full video above to see all the details, but we’re unwrapping more of the details below, too.

Linda’s Creative Advent Calendar Wall

Linda took their built-in shelves and turned them into a full-wall DIY advent calendar, complete with festive cubbies filled with Christmas boxes and bows for each day of December. Inside, the little ones can find fun little books, hand-crafted pieces, nutcrackers, Elves on the Shelf, and more cute, festive surprises. “I love that Linda just completely curates this out of what we can find around the house,” Drew says.

From their Christmas tree beautifully trimmed with handmade ornaments made by Parker, Piper and their cousins; to felted pieces that Linda crafted herself; to their creative advent-ure calendar wall strung with velvet bows and ribbons, Drew and Linda’s house puts the North Pole to shame!

The Wonderous Ceiling Christmas Train

A big showstopper is the Christmas train that runs around the ceiling of the living room. Parker and Piper both love trains, and it’s become a mainstay in their holiday decor. Drew and Parker even made a tradition of going to the train store around Christmas. This year, they bought two new train cars to hitch on. It took a bit of work and creativity to make their ceiling train idea come to fruition, but it’s become a standout Christmas decoration in their home that everyone loves.

“Everyone who walks in here, whether you’re 3 years old or you’re 80 years old, stops and gives a big, ‘Wow,’ when they see the train running around the ceiling,” Drew says.

Drew and Linda’s DIY Holiday Decoration Ideas

Homemade Ornaments

“A lot of the ornaments throughout have been handmade,” Drew says. Parker and Piper hung their adorable salt dough ornaments, and Linda even felted some of our favorite holiday characters (like the Abominable Snowman from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer!)

Repurposed Holiday Cards

“We save all the old holiday cards and we actually just cut them up into strips,” he says, “And then with the kids we actually tape them together and create long ring garland that we just put throughout the house. We love crafting in this house!”

Decorate With Leftover Ribbon

“We’re taking arts and crafts scraps and turning it into what we can,” Drew says. Linda uses ribbon scraps and pompoms to make bows to hang alongside the Christmas stockings, on their advent calendar wall, and throughout the house on garland and other decorations.

We know Parker loves his trains, so the advent calendar train was a huge hit! He could play with all the sweet advent boxes, hide little goodies in the compartments, and of course, play trains with his little sister. It was a simple but extra-special way to combine something he loves with the holiday spirit.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the Park House!

Jonathan and Zooey love to celebrate the holidays. In fact, Jonathan is basically the real-life version of Buddy the Elf this time of year. So it’s no surprise to hear they go all-out when it comes to their decorations. They fill their historical home to the brim with modern tinsel trees, stockings, sugarplums, and nutcrackers galore. And because you made the Nice list, Jonathan is giving you a sneak peek at all the merrymaking, as well as a few tips to turn your space into a winter wonderland.

They worked with Stephen Brown and his team at Glitterville Studios to create a whimsical Christmas dreamland throughout their home, and it turned out better than we could even imagine! “We love the color, we love the sparkle, we love the glitter,” Jonathan says. “We want something that feels fresh—our own personal holiday theme this year is velvet and bows or tartan and tinsel.” So, Stephen got to work crafting the holiday home of their dreams. Over five days (and countless hand-tied bows and handmade baubles!) the Glitterville team turned the Park House into a stunning winter wonderland. Watch our video to take a peek behind the scenes and see exactly how Stephen made the magic happen and keep reading for even more insider details.

Throughout their home, you’ll find bits and baubles of whimsical holiday decor that feels jovial and creative, with nostalgic elements that make it perfectly the Park House. They pull off the aesthetic by decking the halls with classic pieces—ornaments, garlands, and bows—but layering in unexpected items and decorations that have a bit of a twist, like oversized baubles, papier-mâché goodies, flying reindeer, and holiday characters with plenty of sparkle.

With so many adorable characters, themes, and holiday scenes around the house, Jonathan likes to keep it cohesive by sticking to a similar color story throughout. This way, it feels just like a journey through the North Pole. “I like it to be a little bit nostalgic, a little bit fun, with a whole lot of holiday spirit,” Jonathan says.

You know Dasher and Dancer, Prancer and Vixen… But did you know that Jonathan has all of our favorite reindeer floating right in his foyer? It’s true! Dashing over the entryway cabinet and up into the chandelier are all of Santa’s favorite sleigh creatures.

“We like to have different themes for different areas,” Jonathan says. You can see that on the variety of trees alone! Not to mention all the various beautiful Christmas vignettes throughout the home, like a sweet gumdrop fountain and the cutest après ski village atop the fireplace mantel.

Inside the living room tree, you’ll find handmade ski characters, hot cocoa mugs, holiday cabins, and of course, plenty of sparkle! Layering these different elements with bows, light bulbs, and different shaped objects creates a holiday display that makes a stunning impact.

“As a costume designer, which is where I started,” Stephen says. “We believe that anything can be a hat as long as you put it on your head—and anything can be a Christmas ornament as long as you can tie it to the tree!”

“The main event is our Christmas tree in the family room, because that’s where we do the family photos, that’s where we put the presents—that is the pièce de résistance,” Jonathan says. “And this is the most incredible tree.”

“Everything in moderation,” Stephen says. “Including moderation. My theory when decorating a tree is you put a lot on this side, until it leans that way—then you put a lot on this side, until it leans this way, and eventually it all evens out.” Stephen’s more-is-more approach to decorating is exactly what makes Jonathan’s home feel so merry and bright! The color, the texture, and the whimsy come together to create something truly magical.

Of course, we all know how much Jonathan and Zooey love their nutcracker collection, too. From the giant gumdrop nutcracker guarding the door to their handmade characters throughout the home, each one has its own personality and special kind of whimsy.

His favorite this year is a beautiful glimmering nutcracker that was actually hand-jeweled by Stephen at Glitterville. “He’s like the boss of all the nutcrackers—or should we say the diva,” Jonathan says.

Jonathan is also sharing tips on how to up the holiday spirit in your home this year, whether you want to refresh your usual wintertime decor or you’re getting ready to throw a holiday party to remember. His expert advice will help you transform your space into a magical festive wonderland—it’s his gift to you!

Don’t Be Afraid of Going Bold

“If you have a theme that you love, a color palette that you love, maybe the kids want to get involved picking out some of the colors—just have a little fun,” he says. “If you never go bold, you’re never going to create something truly incredible.” Whether it’s adding in more sparkle, combining colors you don’t use often, or going all-out with a festive theme, just make it your own. He adds, “Do something that’s going to take you out of your comfort zone, and do something truly magical this holiday season.”

Lindy Lin

Plan In Advance

”There are lots of different rules when decorating for the holidays, but of course as we know, rules are meant to be broken, so it really depends on your comfort level. One of the big ones is if you have little kids or big animals, you want to be careful with stuff they can knock over or that can shatter, like glass. We have a lot of glass, a lot of tinsel—things like that. However, we also have some ground rules, and the kids are really great at not knocking things over. Just make sure you plan in advance. The more robust you want your decorations to be, it’s going to take a little bit more work to make sure you get the right stuff.”

Combine Decor Old, New, and Hand-Made

“We reuse most of our Christmas decorations from year to year, and sometimes we’ll introduce something new, like our cute little gingerbread people. It’s nice to have a little bit of the old, a little bit of the new. Some of it is just made out of cardboard—you can do crafts with the kids and glitter it up a little bit to make something that’s a little whimsical, and then you can tie it in with your design. We love to see stuff that’s been made by the family and some that’s professionally made.”

Lindy Lin

Refresh Your Usual Scenes

“If you have something that’s really recognizable that you decorate with year after year, you can mix it up by using it a little differently,” Jonathan says. Take the solarium, for example. This year, Stephen took the colorful champagne bottles they used last year in the living room tree and strung them along the olive trees inside the solarium for a sweet and celebratory gumdrop-themed look that feels fresh and festive.

Lindy Lin

Layer Your Lights

“Different kinds of lights offer different dimension. You’ll see we have large C9 bulbs, but we also have LEDs that have a soft twinkle on and off, in addition to another LED that’s on all the time to provide illumination. We have three different strands of lights all tied together and it creates a beautiful illusion.”

Lindy Lin

Get Real

“If you have an artificial tree but you miss the smell of a real tree or how full it can look, here’s a trick: We went to a tree lot, and they gave us their trimmings from real trees. We stuffed those real branches into our tree. You can smell it—it smells great—and it adds a real natural element with the branches filling it out.”

Top With Tinsel

“…And don’t be afraid of tinsel! I don’t like it when it’s a blanket of tinsel tossed everywhere, it should be done in tasteful ways so you can still see your ornaments. I have all these beautiful glass ornaments and they look really classic, but I wanted to bring that whimsy with the tinsel, too.”

If you have plans to make your home into a dreamy festive haven just like Jonathan and Zooey, be sure to tag us on Instagram @DrewandJonathan so we can marvel at all your beautiful work! And don’t forget that you can shop Glitterville decor online, too. Most of all, we hope you have a very happy holiday and a merry new year.

Drew is back with another epic home tour, and this week, he’s giving us an inside look at one of the best-kept secrets in Pasadena. The Blinn House is a historic Prairie-style home with architectural features that truly wow, and an attention to detail that can’t be matched.

Prairie-style architecture originated in Chicago (developed by a group of architects including Frank Lloyd Wright) and was popularized in the Midwest in the 20th century. It emphasizes horizontal lines, with a focus on celebrating the wide-open landscape of the American Midwest. The Blinn House is the only Prairie-style house designed by George W. Maher west of the Mississippi River.

Completed in 1906, the Blinn House was originally home to the Blinn family—husband and wife Edmund and Kate Blinn, as well as their four children. They snowbirded in Pasadena to escape the harsh Chicago winters. But the Blinns eventually decided to make the move permanent, buying up two plots of land next to each other so they could build their big dream home in California.

Small Details, Big Impact

The fixation on detail is abundant in the Blinn House. Throughout both the interior and exterior, you see a callback to these beautiful wisteria vines that line the garden. From the repeating pattern of the wisteria vines in the art glass (in the windows lining the home, the ornate light fixtures, and the fireplace facade) to the broken arch motif (in the archways, furniture, windows, and the staircase banister), there is a special, intentional focus on harmony within the space.

George W. Maher is credited with the design philosophy known as Motif-Rhythm Theory, which puts emphasis on a particular decorative element or geometric shape—like the wisteria vines and broken arches, in the case of the Blinn House—to create a cohesive design, repeating it throughout the building in different forms such as the architecture, ornamentation, or furniture.

The Beauty of Historic Homes

“I think things were built better back in the day,” Drew says. “They were built stronger, they were built smarter in many ways…The history of a house is what makes it so cool.” In the case of the Blinn House, the home was built with an emphasis on both artistic craft and functionality—down to the waterproofed drain spouts on the sleeping porch. It’s all of these small details, along with the stories and the history behind their inception, that make historic homes so complex and incredible to dig into.

If you’re looking to create a comfortable, personal, and memorable home, you have the ultimate cheat code hiding right under your nose. No, it’s not one of the 500 pins on your “Dream Home” Pinterest board (as lovely as they are); nor is it one of the many talented designers you follow on Instagram. In fact, the biggest key to unlocking your home’s ultimate potential involves taking a closer look at your house style type.

Architecture can—and should—intimately inform your interior design choices, from the exterior paint color you choose to the types of molding that line your interior walls. While there’s no need to go full-blown mid-century modern everything in your ‘50s ranch if that’s not your vibe, having a general education around your house type and style can act as a helpful roadmap when completing a renovation or curating your furniture or decor.

To help foster your foundational knowledge, we’re detailing 10 of the most common house types below, including the popular Tudor-style home, ornate Victorian-style houses, earthy Spanish-style homes, classic Colonial-style houses, and more. Class is officially in session.

01

Ranch Style House

Popularized in the United States in the late ‘40s and early ‘50s, ranch-style homes are the architectural answer to a post-WWII desire for laid-back, easy living that was both affordable and functional for growing families. With a sprawling footprint on a single level, ranch-style homes were often long and rectangular or designed with an L-shaped footprint, which allowed for seamless flow between the interior rooms and outdoor spaces.

The interior design was kept streamlined and minimal, with logical floor plans that promoted socialization. Architectural details often took the form of simple molding, mid-century modern shelving, and hardwood floors. Many ranch homes were finished on the exterior with brick, though as the style grew in popularity and technology progressed, exterior finish options expanded to include wood shingles and vinyl siding.

02

Tudor Style Home

tudor house

Reminiscent of something straight out of a medieval village, Tudor-style houses have a historical air about them that will thrill any historic-home lover. Inspired by early English architecture, Tudor homes first took a foothold in America in the 1920s and 1940s, where they offered something a bit different than the colonial architecture popular at the time. Tudor style homes are most recognizable by their exterior architecture, which features a facade of pitched gable roofs, often decorated with wood beams set against a white or stucco backdrop. Brick and wood details are also usually mixed in.

Uniquely shaped windows are also a calling card of Tudor architecture, and many are taller and more narrow than their contemporary counterparts. Some even feature era-specific detailing, like stained glass or diamond panes. Inside, Tudor-style homes lean effortlessly into cozy luxury, with rich millwork, massive fireplaces, exposed beams, and sloped ceilings all adding to their undeniable charm.

03

Craftsman Style Home

craftsman style house

Craftsman-style houses—also referred to as Craftsman bungalows—are among the most humble examples of American architecture, beloved for their modest footprint, approachable charm, and striking simplicity. Popularized during the Arts and Crafts movement of the early 1900s, a love for Craftsman-style homes spread quickly, thanks to kit homes from companies like Sears, which made the architectural look a cornerstone of their product. Most notably, Craftsman-style homes feature a gabled overhang at the front, which—teamed with exposed roof supports and columns—creates an expansive front porch from which to watch the world go by.

Craftsman-style homes also offered owners a chance to get a bit creative with their color selection. It was not uncommon to see homes finished in shades of sage, rust, mustard, or blue. As the name implies, Craftsman-style homes put a large emphasis on craftsmanship, with interiors that feature plenty of custom millwork (think built-in benches or expansive bookcases), brick fireplaces, and a floor plan that caters to everyday practicality.

04

Cape Cod Style House

cape cod home

When you picture a home by the sea, chances are good that a Cape Cod-style house is what first comes to mind. Full of quintessential New England charm, this enduring architectural style dates all the way back to the late 1600s, taking the lead from the practical (yet impossibly charming) British coastal cottages owned by English settlers. Meant to withstand all manner of harsh New England weather (including the scalding summer sun, salty air, and brutal winters), Cape Cod-style homes were decidedly compact and simple. There’s an emphasis on symmetry and a cedar-shingle exterior that’s weathered to the perfect silver-gray.

Though Cape Cod-style homes were traditionally built as one-story dwellings (often with dormer windows), many have expanded to two stories over the decades as building methods became more reliable and sturdy. Inside, fanciful finishes are eschewed in the name of simplicity, with central fireplaces (in the main living area, as well as the kitchen), minimalist millwork, snug bedrooms, and cozy proportions that all harken back to a sense of traditional simplicity.

05

Colonial Style House

colonial home

Perhaps the most iconic version of American architecture, Colonial-style homes date back to the early 1600s and are easily identifiable, thanks to their balanced exterior facade—which includes a centered front door with windows on each side and a second story with five windows overhead—and a restrained, timeless sense of style. Most Colonial-style homes feature a central hall that acts as the main artery of the home, with formal rooms flanking each side, and bedrooms and private spaces upstairs.

Though there are different iterations of the Colonial vernacular (including Georgian, Dutch, and Spanish), many incorporate similar interior finishes, including several fireplaces, intricate door profiles, interior shutters, and specialty millwork, like wainscoting. Beautiful staircases are also a hallmark of Colonial-style homes, and are often given a place of prominence in the center hall as another way for the home to bridge the gap between function and elegance.

06

Shotgun Style House

southern shotgun style houses in new orleans

A classic Southern aesthetic, shotgun-style homes emerged in the early 1880s and soared to popularity in places like New Orleans, where they offered an affordable and efficient way to build on narrow urban lots. While features of the architectural style can be attributed to African and Caribbean influences—primarily because of the gabled front roof and colorful exteriors—shotgun style homes are considered quintessentially American.

The homes themselves are modest and narrow, hardly ever exceeding 15 feet wide, with a floor plan that’s arranged in a single straight line from front to back. While privacy in the home is limited (after all, each room opens into the next), shotgun-style homes still boast plenty of charm and efficiency, with expansive windows, humble finishes, and plenty of color and ornate trimwork on the facade.

07

Victorian Style House

victorian home

Victorian-style homes are basically your childhood dollhouse, all grown up (and life-sized!). Victorian architecture, which owes its namesake to Queen Victoria of England, reached its height of popularity between the mid-1800s and early 1900s, when the Industrial Revolution made features like mass-produced millwork more accessible than ever. Homeowners of that time took access to that beauty and ran with it, embracing a “more is more” attitude that manifested itself in intricate gables, sprawling wrap-around porches, fanciful turrets, and plenty of whimsy, including trimwork with charming names such as “gingerbread” trim.

Step inside a Victorian-style home and you’ll find an equally ornate interior, with tall ceilings, oversized windows, plenty of rich woodwork, elaborate finishes (especially where staircases and fireplace mantels are concerned), and a penchant for formal living. Victorian homes favored layouts that allowed for privacy and entertaining, including a formal living room, smoking parlor, formal dining room, and a snuggery (a more private living room retreat), as well as separate quarters and entrances for children and housekeepers.

08

Bungalow Style House

bungalow home

Compact and charming, bungalow-style homes first emerged in the early 1900s and quickly became the calling card for the American middle class. The bungalow was originally adapted by British colonists in India, inspired by traditional indigenous Bengal huts, called bangla ghar. They boasted large, wide porches, mud walls, and a thatched roof for relief from the sun. The bungalow-style house we know today is humble and welcoming, featuring a one- or one-and-a-half-story structure with a low gable roof, several support columns, and a stucco or clapboard exterior. Unlike other home styles, which primarily exist in certain parts of the country, bungalow-style houses can be found from coast to coast, making them one of the most recognizable and ubiquitous architectural styles in the USA.

Inside, bungalow-style homes hold tight to their livable DNA, with a semi-open floorplan that allows for easy flow through the main living spaces while maintaining privacy throughout the rest of the home. Several charming features—including stained millwork and built-in finishes, like buffets and cabinetry—up the functionality of the space while adding warmth and charm.

09

Spanish Style House

spanish style house

Synonymous with warm-weather living, Spanish-style homes are a popular choice for locations with year-round balmy temps, especially in the Southwest, Florida, and California. With an architectural style that’s rooted in the missions and haciendas of colonial Spain, these charming abodes are characterized by their stucco exterior (typically painted white or another earthy neutral) and red clay tile roofs.

Layers of texture and living finishes reign supreme inside Spanish-style homes, where you can often find a mix of materials ranging from terracotta and exposed wood to plaster and wrought iron. Curved doorways and windows soften the overall look, while plenty of indoor-outdoor flow promotes a connection to outdoor living. While many Spanish-style homes are sprawling villas, there are just as many compact, cottage-sized iterations of the architectural style, making them a versatile design for many temperate-weather homeowners.

10

Japanese Style House

traditional japanese home exterior

Japanese-style architecture first took a foothold in the United States in the late 19th century, where it was used to iterate on both the Arts and Crafts and Mid-Century Modernism architecture movements. Now commonly referred to as “Japandi,” this unique style blends the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi (essentially, finding beauty in imperfection) with the clean lines and natural minimalism of Scandinavian design to create a home that blends simply and harmoniously with its surroundings. The exterior of a Japanese-style home often features a thatched or tiled roof with a slight curve at the eaves, as well as wood doors and window casings that combine to form an understated exterior.

Inside, the emphasis on minimalism remains, with natural materials like exposed wood beams and grass screens helping to channel a soothing, serene atmosphere. While some contemporary conveniences may be incorporated indoors, they’re most usually approached through a lens of balance and simplicity. Floor plans are flowing and without frills; finishes are streamlined and never a distraction. This is not an interior where you’ll find a lot of “extras.” Instead, the surrounding landscape and clean lines are allowed to do the talking—or, rather, the whispering.

Drew is back with another incredible home tour! This time, we’re peeking inside a Los Angeles house that’s chock-full of sleek upgrades and super creative designs that will definitely inspire your next refresh.

Our homeowner today is Brady Tolbert, designer and creative director for Bobby Berk (who you might recognize from Queer Eye). He’s opened his home to Drew and all of you, and you will love how he’s infused personality into every nook and cranny of this light, bright space they’ve dubbed “the tree house.”

You’ll have to watch the video above for the full tour, but here are a few of our favorite takeaways from Brady’s home.

Not-Your-Basic Neutrals

designer brady tolbert living room

Some people assume that a neutral style is boring—but Brady proves that’s far from true! His home’s main palette is browns, creams, and blacks. However, he adds texture and interest with every piece, whether it’s a black squiggly-shaped mirror, a white oversize round light fixture, or tons of interesting seating. You can see how the combination creates a design that feels unique and beautiful.

“I love layering, I love texture, I love a lot of eclectic pieces. It’s a neutral-organic style,” Brady tells Drew.

Stay Comfortable in Style

designer brady tolberts home office with a quilt hvac system

All the windows in Brady’s home are stunning and bring in amazing natural light. But with all that sunshine comes a lot of heat. To make his home comfortable without sacrificing any style, he installed a Quilt ductless heat pump system. It has smart features like the ability to automate different schedules for different rooms, reduce usage in rooms when they’re empty, and an ultra-sleek design.

“When you have big windows like this it’s gorgeous, but it lets a lot of heat in,” Drew says. “Quilt is the most efficient HVAC system on the market. It’ll learn your habits; it doesn’t cool and heat rooms when you aren’t using it; and it’s way more cost effective and easier to install than a traditional HVAC system.”

Brady agrees saying, “It took two days. There was one tiny hole they drilled in the wall, and there was no mess.” Bonus: The accompanying thermostat looks chic and minimalist, too.

Get Creative

Brady’s home is a perfect example of how you can get creative with design. He’s found interesting ways to transform all types of items, like turning an old headboard into a bench seat in his living room, reusing shelving from a retail store to create a statement wall, and painting over old flooring he didn’t like. He even sliced the doors of a furniture piece in half to hide his TV in the bedroom. So next time you find something at a thrift store or are considering throwing out an item you love but aren’t sure how to use it, take a page out of Brady’s book (or his Instagram) and consider brainstorming other ways you can use it.

You won’t want to miss any of Brady and Drew’s tips, so watch the full video above and subscribe to our Drew & Jonathan YouTube for more tours, design tricks, and fun with your favorite Bros.

Editor’s Note: Drew Scott is an investor in Quilt, which is mentioned here.

If you’ve ever seen The West Wing, The Social Network, or Beyoncé’s music video for “Formation,” then you might recognize the Fényes mansion in Pasadena, California. This sprawling estate was home to Eva Fényes and her husband, Dr. Adalbert Fényes in the early 1900s, and throughout the years has gained notoriety not just for its breathtaking design, but also for its historic architectural significance. And today, Drew is taking us on a tour of the property to show us an exclusive look at the mansion and all of its treasured details.

Built in Pasadena in 1906, the 10,000 square-foot home has a whopping 22 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms. It includes a grand foyer, drawing room, dining room, kitchen and butler’s pantry, study, upstairs sitting room, and more. Today, it’s a designated Pasadena Cultural Heritage landmark, a Point of Historic Interest by the state of California, and the home of the Pasadena Museum of History. It’s a part of history, and thanks to the efforts of the Pasadena Museum of History (formerly Pasadena Historical Society), the property has been impeccably preserved since 1970.

The Impact of Eva Fényes

Eva Fényes wasn’t just a socialite—she was a savvy businesswoman, a formally trained watercolor artist, a patron of the arts, a philanthropist, and so much more. She was the daughter of the New York publisher Leonard Scott and his wife, Rebecca Briggs Scott. Raised in New York City, she formally studied art in New York, Europe, and Egypt. After divorcing her first husband Lt. William S. Muse, Eva traveled throughout Europe and Egypt while their daughter Leonora attended boarding school. Eva eventually met Dr. Adelbert Fényes, who she married in Budapest and settled down with in Pasadena.

Eva was part of many arts and philanthropic organizations, such as the Pasadena Music and Art Association, Landmarks Club of California, the Southwest Society, and was even on the board of trustees at the Southwest Museum. She was a pillar in the arts community, helping open literary salons and more. She was an incredibly savvy businesswoman as well, with lucrative investment properties and business shops that allowed her to create the grand estate. The impact of her work is still seen today, throughout the bustling arts scene in Pasadena and beyond.

Details in the Fényes Home

During this period, the beauty was in the detail. Even the smallest aspects, such as the shape of glassware or the fabric of the linens, were intentionally designed with the home style in mind. Each facet was part of a larger, eclectic collective. “Everywhere you look, from the floor to the rugs up to the ceiling, there’s so much detail. Everything was epic,” Drew says. The Beaux Arts-style home features elaborate design elements, from the ornate designs in the furniture to the thoughtfully-styled study complete with a hidden spiral staircase for performing musicians and a fire shield to protect guests from the heat of the fireplace.

If you’ve ever seen the iconic film Back to the Future, then you might recognize the home that Jonathan is touring. In the movie, this property was used as the exterior location for Doc Brown’s house, which Marty McFly travels back to. But apart from its significance in movie history, it’s also a crown jewel of Arts and Crafts architecture. And today, Jonathan is taking us on an exclusive tour of the Gamble House, including its secret rooms, thoughtful layout choices, history, architecture, and even some snippets of trivia you might not have known before.

The Gamble House was donated by the Gamble family (yes, those Gambles!) to the city of Pasadena, California in 1966. Since then, it’s become a local, state, and national historic landmark owned by the City of Pasadena and operated by The Gamble House Conservancy. Subtle details are abundant both inside and outside the home. And today, you’ll get to tour it with Jonathan as he takes a step inside to examine the fine characteristics that make up this incredible architectural landmark, perfectly preserved in time. Inside, he unveils the reasons behind the designs, the incredible attention to detail, and the impact of the home at large.

The Gamble House Architecture

The Gamble House is a Craftsman-style home that was built in 1908, designed by architects Charles and Henry Greene for David and Mary Gamble of Proctor & Gamble. (Craftsman is a specific style within the larger Arts and Crafts movement that originated in Britain in the late 19th century.) The Gamble House is internationally recognized as a masterpiece of American Arts and Crafts architecture. From the inlay motifs and metal and glasswork, to the low-pitched gable roof and overhanging eaves, the authentic Craftsman principles of design are rich throughout the home. From the detailed woodwork to the thoughtful layout and design elements, this home is full of exciting surprises.

Gamble House History and Impact Today

The history of the Gamble House lives on today, as the home isn’t just being held in time—from tours and education programs to special events for architecture enthusiasts and children alike, the conservancy has made sure to make Game House part of the public community. And it’s actually being lived in to this day. The Gamble House actually has a program called The Gamble House Conservancy Scholars-in-Residence Fellowship, where two fifth-year architecture students are awarded a fellowship where they can live and care for the home while studying.

Recently, Drew made a surprise visit to Mom and Dad’s for a tour of their new Los Angeles home. He walked through the whole house, covering every room from the front door to their backyard made for entertaining. After filming, however, Jonathan thought it’d be fun to watch the video back with their parents Jim and Joanne Scott and get their reaction (complete with some playful jabs at his twin brother, of course!). Their parents talk through their favorite rooms, what they’ve loved about Drew and Jonathan’s renovation choices, and the thoughtful decisions behind the design to make their house feel like a home.

As Joanne, Jim, and Jonathan sat down to watch the tour back together, they also pointed out just how much has already changed since they bought the place, and even since filming the episode of Don’t Hate Your House. “Originally, there were so many different levels. The front entry was really cramped, and a different level, and a trip hazard,” Jonathan says. “What has changed for you now and how you use the front entry when people come visit?”

“I mean, it’s so nice and open and bright,” Joanne says. There were plenty of big differences, like demoing the walls to open up the space and leveling the floors to make it seamless, but even small touches like the added overhang on the roof make a huge difference in the functionality of the space.

Which room of the house is Mom’s favorite? The new kitchen, of course! We all know how great of a cook Joanne is, and she adores her new kitchen. There’s so much storage and prep space, and it blends right into dining and living rooms, so she can watch her grandkids run around and be part of the fun while they’re hosting family parties. She even surprised Jonathan with some of her famous mint desserts while they watched the tour back together. “The mint dessert is hands-down my favorite dessert,” Jonathan says. “The only reason I did the renovation is so she had a kitchen where she could make me mint dessert all the time.” (Grab Joanne’s mint dessert recipe for yourself here!)

When designing their parents’ backyard at Jim and Joanne Scott’s new Los Angeles home, Drew and Jonathan wanted to make sure they made the space exactly what they wanted. Their parents love hosting friends and family and being outdoors, so it was important that the Bros got it right. “The number one request that our parents had in their outdoor space was somewhere that we can gather with friends and family, and just have a really great time,” Jonathan says. “So, that’s why we set it up this way—where there’s outdoor dining, there’s an outdoor lounging area, and an outdoor kitchen.” They certainly hit the nail on the head! Jonathan is walking us through exactly what he and Drew did to make Jim and Joanne’s backyard into the outdoor oasis they dreamed of, and how you can do it in your own space, too.

Jonathan outlines three main categories that he wanted to master in order to make the perfect outdoor entertaining space for his parents: low-maintenance upgrades; plenty of plants; and a welcoming atmosphere. In order to achieve the look, Drew and Jonathan made smart swaps and incorporated thoughtful, modern touches that make the backyard an easy place to entertain. Additions like stainless steel cabinetry that looks like wood ensures the outdoor kitchen cabinets will never warp; while a UV protective shielding over the slatted pergola makes it easy for Jim and Joanne to sit outside whenever they’d like, no matter the weather. Come along while we catch an inside peek at all these backyard ideas and more!

Set the Tone for a Welcoming Space

An Outdoor Fireplace

Drew and Jonathan decided to craft a custom outdoor fireplace that matches their parents’ Spanish-style home. “We built it out, clad it in stucco, and it just feels so nice and comfy,” Jonathan says.

A Large Dining Table

Next to their outdoor kitchen and lounge area, Drew and Jonathan’s mom and dad also have a large outdoor dining table where they can sit comfortably with the whole family, enjoying brunches or dinners; sipping drinks; and enjoying the fresh air with family.

Customizing the Garden

Beautiful Flowers for Color

“Even when the kids have a dance recital or something, she’ll come out to the garden, clip her own flowers, and bring a bouquet for them just from her own garden, which I think is really special,” Jonathan says. The flowers add an extra-special touch that takes you out of the city and into a space that feels calming. “This really feels like an English garden in a Spanish-style home.”

Adding Plants That Provide

“My mom loves having her own flowers and having her own fruit, so they have a mandarin tree here; lemon tree over there,” Jonathan says. In between beautiful blooms and colorful buds, Joanne also has plenty of fruit and citrus trees that she can use in her recipes. “It’s nice to have a garden that’s actually going to service your culinary needs,” he says.

Stylish, Low-Maintenance Additions

A Seamless Pergola

“The most impactful thing out here is the pergola. We decided it had to serve the purpose of actually shading them from the sun, but in addition, we wanted to tie into all the wood tones throughout the property,” Jonathan says. “And it’s integrated directly into the house, so it’s totally seamless.”

And they didn’t stop there. “Up above that, we actually installed a corrugated tinted material that’s a UV protection shield, so even when the sun’s right above, you don’t get any of those harsh rays coming down,” he says.

Smart Fencing

“This is a different type of fencing product that I put in around their yard because it’s a man-made product, but you never have to repaint it, you never have to stain it,” Jonathan says. “In fact, even in a wildfire area, you can get Class A non-combustable materials that look like cedar, and they’re nice and secure, they won’t warp or anything.”

Functional Cabinetry

Similar to the low-maintenance fencing they used, they also went for a smart material for the outdoor kitchen. “I used outdoor cabinetry—stainless steel cabinetry—that looks like wood, but it will never warp, never fade, and that’s important for outside,” he says.
