If you’ve read my candle warmer lamp review, then you already know I’m dedicated to finding the perfect way to keep my home smelling fresh. I’ve gone down all the rabbit holes: simmer pots, traditional candles, vacuums, upholstery deodorizers. You name it, I’ve tried it. So it was only natural that I tested and reviewed the best room sprays to share the results here. This ended up being a very interesting experiment, and I was actually shocked at the results.

But I’m getting ahead of myself—before we dig in, I’ll give you a quick rundown of how I chose and tested each item. First, I did a ton of initial research to find the most searched-for room sprays, while also combing forums like Reddit and, of course, asking for personal recommendations. I whittled it all down to a curated list of products that range from brands you know and love, as well as a few you may not be familiar with. Here’s the final roster:

Now that we have the who, it’s time for the how. A bit of context on my home: I live in a railroad-style apartment, so very much not open concept. This gave me a good opportunity to test each spray in small rooms as well as ones that connect to each other (i.e., a variety of layouts and sizes). I followed each product’s specific directions and sprayed about 4 to 7 spritzes each time. I left the room and came back at 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, and an hour to test potency. I repeated this 3 times with each spray in each room (always on different days) to see if the results could be replicated.

Best Overall

Tyler Candle Company Linen and Room Spray

Amazon

$17.60

At-a-Glance:
Price: $18.99
Size: 8 oz
Scent: Diva

Pros:
✓ Super long-lasting scent

Cons:
✗ Not the most aesthetically pleasing packaging
✗ Scent is a bit strong at first

Review:
I’ll be honest here—I was unfamiliar with this company before this test. Drew & Jonathan senior editor Bree Pulver O’Hagan introduced me to it after hearing hype about Tyler’s laundry detergent on TikTok. (Which she’s also testing—stay tuned for that review!) I decided to take a risk and see what it was all about.

The main takeaway: This stuff works. I can smell it not just hours, but days later. I sprayed it in my bedroom, and my dog even picked it up just by laying on the sheets! It was above and beyond the best in long-term results, especially considering its reasonable price. That said, it does smell quite strong at first. But it lightens up over time, and is worth the initial “woah”-factor, in my opinion.

The one drawback is that I chose the scent Diva, which ended up not being my favorite. It’s not off-putting by any means, it’s just not my personal preference. (Which, of course, is all a matter of opinion.) But I will 100% be buying this formula again in a different fragrance, without a doubt.

02

Best Scent

Homecourt Room Deodorant

Amazon

$45.00

At-a-Glance:
Price: $45
Size: 3.4 oz
Scent: Steeped Rose

Pros:
✓ Smells amazing
✓ Lingers for a solid amount of time
✓ Includes some eco-friendly and/or sustainably sourced ingredients

Cons:
✗ Smaller amount for the price

Review:
Fun fact: The founder of this brand is none other than our former CIOU star Courteney Cox! Let me start by saying this scent is absolutely divine. It truly smells like fresh roses and has absolutely no hint of that artificial finish some sprays can have. I would bathe in Steeped Rose, which obviously means I have every intention of buying the hand soap from her collection, as well.

All that said, my only con here is wishing the product would linger for a bit longer because it’s so fresh. It has a respectable lifespan—I could still smell it after about an hour, but less than a full day. It’s also on the pricier side, which I would say is worth it for the scent and packaging. If you have guests coming over or want your home to smell nice for a special occasion, this is the stuff to keep in your cabinet. As I said earlier, I’m totally hooked and very interested in testing other products from her line.

03

Best Affordable

Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Room Spray

Amazon

$11.90

At-a-Glance
Price: $12
Size: 8 oz
Scent: Balsam, Geranium

Pros:
✓ Affordable
✓ Lasts a long time
✓ Tons of scents

Cons:
✗ Not quite as natural a scent

Review:
You read the stats above correctly: I have purchased this in two different scents! I love Mrs. Meyer’s products—the hand soap in Geranium smells 10x more expensive than it is—so I wasn’t surprised to find that the room spray is excellent, especially for the price. It lingers about 2 to 3 hours, and even longer on linens. It comes in so many scents, too, so you will have no problem finding one that suits your taste.

The only negative is that it’s not quite as natural smelling as, say, the Homecourt room spray. But if bang for your buck is your primary concern, that’s a fair tradeoff. The packaging isn’t style-forward, so I do keep this under my sink versus out on display. But again, for under $12, you can only ask for so much. I’d recommend this to anyone who wants a fresh-smelling space on a dime. (And seriously, don’t skip the hand soap.)

04

Best Packaging

Aesop Aromatique Luxury Room Spray

Amazon

$66.00

At-a-Glance:
Price: $66
Size: 3.4 oz
Scent: Olous

Pros:
✓ Beautiful packaging
✓ Luxe smell
✓ Vegan, paraben-free, cruelty-free

Cons:
✗ Not as long-lasting
✗ Pricey for the size

Review:
Man, I had a hard time picking what scent to test here, as Aesop is famous for its beautiful packaging and amazing fragrances. I ultimately narrowed it down to the Reddit-favorite Olous, which is described as, “a blend of citrus botanicals, balanced by breaking waves of Cedar and the refreshing spice of Cardamom.” Honestly, it smells exactly like that!

My favorite thing about this room spray is its appearance. It can be effortlessly blended into the decor on a shelf, coffee table, or cabinet for easy access. And I won’t lie—you feel pretty chic when spritzing this throughout your home. The smell has a lovely, slightly musky finish and immediately fills the space. However, I didn’t notice it past the 30-minute mark. If you’re looking for an instant impact for yourself or guests, this does the trick. But if you’re hoping for a day-long result, this may not be your perfect match.

05

Best Middle Ground

Mavwicks Linen and Room Spray

Amazon

$9.99

At-a-Glance:
Price: $9.99
Scent: Enchanted Rouge
Size: 8 oz

Pros:
✓ Affordable
✓ Nice packaging

Cons:
✗ Fades a bit quickly

Review:
My mistake with this product came down to choosing the scent. I have the upholstery deodorant in Bel-Aire, and I love, love, love it. (It’s currently sold out, but you can get it in the room spray.) For that reason, I decided to try out a different fragrance and see if history could repeat itself. Unfortunately, it ended up just not being my style. Again, this is a personal preference moment.

In terms of formula, this lasted past the hour mark and I was still picking up hints of it a few hours later. So, for the price, it certainly does the trick for a quick refresh. Plus, it easily has the prettiest packaging of the more affordable options. Next time, I’d grab it in the scent I know I prefer.

06

Best for Bedding

Muse Apothecary Home Ritual Active Odor Eliminator Spray

Amazon

$8.98

At-a-Glance:
Price: $8.98
Size: 4 oz
Scent: Lavender Fields

Pros:
✓ Inexpensive
✓ Nice packaging
✓ Several scent options
✓ Lingers longest on linens

Cons:
✗ Doesn’t last in the air quite as long as others

Review:
This always populates on my Amazon searches, so it felt appropriate to test it out. In terms of longevity compared to other budget-friendly room sprays, this sits somewhere between Mrs. Meyer’s and Mavwicks. It’s not noticeable in the air after about 30 minutes, but it will remain on your linens for several hours. The packaging is also a middle ground between the two—it’s sleeker than Mrs. Meyer’s, but not quite as streamlined as Mavwicks.

For me the standout here is the scent. Lavendar can be a difficult one to pull off, oftentimes landing on the more artificial side. But Muse’s lavender is light and lovely, and I find myself reaching for this over others to spritz on my sheets after I change them so they can feel extra-luxe when I go to sleep that night.

07

Honorable Mention

Poo-Pourri Before-You-Go Toilet Spray

Amazon

$13.39

I don’t need to get into too much detail here, but if you don’t have a bottle of this in your bathroom (and a travel size in your bag—thank me later!), then you should get one ASAP. I find that this does the job well when used as directed, and it’s just a nice comfort for yourself and guests. It’s not obvious like your standard bathroom freshener spray, either. You won’t be sorry you picked a few of these up!

Is Bleach Safe to Use in My Toilet and Sink?

In general, a diluted bleach solution is safe to use to disinfect the toilet and certain sink surfaces, but should be used sparingly and never in combination with other cleaners. For sink surfaces, bleach is safe for ceramic, porcelain, and enamel; do not use it on unsealed stone, cultured marble, stainless steel, or metal, as it can stain, corrode, or etch. For disinfection, use a heavily diluted bleach solution in a spray bottle (around 1 tablespoon of bleach per quart of water); let it sit for a minute or two, and then wipe it down with a damp, clean rag. Never pour bleach directly down the drain, as it can cause corrosion in your pipes.

What’s the Best Order to Clean a Bathroom?

Like every place in the house, you should always work top to bottom. Start with dusting or vacuuming the bathroom exhaust fan (ceiling), and then work your way down (dust high shelves, wipe down walls, then surfaces, then clean the floors). Likewise, work top to bottom in each individual area. For the toilet, for example, wipe down the top, then sides, the exterior and interior of the lid, and finally the base. This prevents dust from flying around or attaching to surfaces you already cleaned.

How Often Should I Clean the Bathroom?

It depends on your household, foot traffic, and bathroom type, but in general, you should clean the bathroom every 2-3 days, or at the very least, weekly to prevent bacteria buildup and mildew. Aim to wipe surfaces down daily, just as you would in the kitchen or living room, with a thorough cleaning at least once a week. Keeping on top of your cleaning schedule in the bathroom can help prevent illness and grime, and keep the bathroom smelling good.

How Do You Keep the Bathroom Smelling Fresh?

Staying on top of your bathroom cleaning tasks is the easiest way to keep it smelling fresh. The bathroom tends to hold onto smells easily, so sticking to a schedule is key. Don’t forget to clean those spaces that can trap smells easily, too, like the toilet brush holder, shower drains, and the toilet. Wipe down the inside and outside of the trash can when you take the trash out; wash and sanitize the inside and outside of the toilet brush holder after each use; clean the exterior and interior of the toilet at least once a week; and clean your shower head and the bathroom drains once a month to keep things smelling fresh. You can also use room sprays, candles, or diffusers for an added layer of scent.

Should I Sanitize My Sponges?

Short answer: Yes. Sponges hold onto a lot of bacteria. Think about what your sponge has touched in the last week. Dirty plates, used glasses and reusable straws, cutting boards—that’s a ton of different substances! And your kitchen sponges can harbor that bacteria, which can result in buildup, mold, and yeast. (Gross.) It’s recommended to replace your kitchen sponge every two weeks or so. But get this—you should actually be sanitizing your sponges every day. So every night after you’ve finished the dishes, give your sponge a quick zap in the microwave (killing 99.99999% of bacteria) or let it run through the dishwasher (killing 99.9998%). The USDA states that these are the two best ways of sanitizing your sponges.

How Do I Know When It’s Time to Toss My Pans and Buy New Ones?

Generally, stainless steel and cast iron pans are going to have the longest lifespan of any cookware. Their natural durability means, when taken care of properly, they can last for decades. Nonstick cookware, however, will last around five years at most. According to Made In Cookware, some ways to tell if it’s time to replace your nonstick cookware are food sticking, rust, scratches, discoloration, peeling, or warping. It’s important to replace your nonstick cookware as soon as you see any signs of wear like this. Depending on your nonstick cookware’s chemical treatment—be it PTFE, ceramic, or anodized aluminum—serious damage to the pan can even pose a health risk. Though nonstick cookware serves its purpose and can be helpful when cooking certain foods, if you’re looking to get more bang for your buck and keep potential toxin risk low, opt for cast iron or stainless steel pans.

Why Is There Greasy Residue On My Open Kitchen Shelving?

You’re not going to love this answer, but that greasy residue is actually from the oils and fats you use to cook. It can splatter further than you’d think, including onto cupboards, shelving, and backsplashes. But there are easy ways to make sure your kitchen stays clean and residue-free. If you have a range hood, take out the filters every week or every other week and clean them in soapy water, and spray down the outside of the range regularly. If you don’t have a range hood and can’t install one, you’ll need to take extra care of your kitchen. Wipe down surfaces weekly with a mix of equal parts water and vinegar. Also consider purchasing a splatter screen for your pans. Whatever your setup, always wipe down open areas in the kitchen with an all-purpose cleaner or a disinfectant to keep your space free of residue, grime, and bacteria.

How Do I Clean My Coffee Pot?

Yes, you should be cleaning your coffee machine! Once a month or so, depending on how frequently you’re using your coffee pot, give your machine a good clean. Running the machine with vinegar does the trick. It’ll sanitize the machine, rid any parts of mold or mildew, and make your coffee taste better. In fact, how to clean a coffee machine is actually pretty simple! According to HGTV, you should pour four cups of vinegar through the reservoir, let the vinegar sit for 30 minutes to do its magic, and then run a brew cycle. Afterwards, make sure you run the machine through with plain water three or four times, or until the vinegar smell is fully gone. (Note: Some coffeemakers have specific cleaning instructions, so make sure to check your manual first.)

How Frequently Should I Actually Wash My Sheets?

Experts say that you should wash your sheets at least once a week. And according to Sleep Foundation, “Some people should wash their sheets even more often than once a week. If you have pets, and particularly if you let them sleep in your bed, a wash every 3 – 4 days is recommended.” We spend a ton of time in bed (up to 60+ hours a week!), and with the combination of dirt, natural oils, sweat, and other buildup, it’s important to keep your bedding clean. And don’t forget to clean and flip your mattress every four months or so too.

How Do I Stop the Mirror From Getting Dusty So Quickly?

Quick lesson in physics: Dust is attracted to statically-charged surfaces. And something as simple as wiping a mirror down in a circular motion can actually create static electricity. This becomes a perfect love affair between a mirror and pesky dust particles. So eliminating that static from the beginning will prolong dust from settling the moment you’re done cleaning. First, wipe down the mirror, without any sprays or cleaners, in a side-to-side motion using a dry microfiber cloth. This will remove dust particles and avoid static. (Never use a paper towel—they leave residue, tiny dust particles, and can actually damage your mirror.) Afterward, use a cleaner of your choice and a clean microfiber cloth, again using the side-to-side method. Make sure to leave the mirror as dry as possible, so dust doesn’t stick to any leftover residue.

How Do I Keep Clothes Smelling Fresh After I Wash Them and Put Them Away?

Scent satchels, charcoal packs, and odor-removing packs will help keep your drawers and closets smelling fresh. Place a pack inside each of your drawers to keep your clothes smelling as clean as they did out of the dryer, and hang moisture-absorbing or scented satchels on a couple of your hangers inside the closet to do the same. As for regular upkeep on how to make your clothes smell good daily, it’s as simple as using a laundry detergent that has a scent you love.

Can You Wash Your Pillows? If So, How Do You Wash Them?

You can (and definitely should!) be cleaning your pillows around two to four times per year, depending on if you have pets, tend to be a hot sleeper, or maybe do some midnight snacking in bed. Depending on your pillow fill, Consumer Reports recommends different washing strategies. Wash your pillows in the washing machine on the gentle cycle if they’re down, feather-filled, or polyester, and hand-wash with a damp cloth and mild detergent if they’re made of memory foam. But always follow the manufacturer guidelines first before jumping in. Pillow protectors and mattress protectors will also help keep your pillows and bed linens in good shape.

How Often Should I Clean My Couch?

Regular vacuum cleaning between and underneath couch cushions and pillows should happen weekly or biweekly. If you eat or drink, cuddle with your pets, and/or sleep on the couch, you should be vacuuming the cushions more frequently. But deep cleaning, using an upholstery cleaner (like the Bissell Little Green Upholstery Cleaner), is best done every four to six months, and more often if you deal with things like pet odor.

How Frequently Should I Mop My Floors?

First thing’s first—your environment, lifestyle, and household will dramatically change this answer. Pets, kids, how often you host, and whether or not you allow shoes around the house are all small things to consider when thinking about your mopping schedule. A good rule of thumb is to vacuum or sweep daily, and mop at least once a week. But if you have a more active household, mopping every other day or every three days is a good practice. Bonus: If you’re someone who likes efficiency, consider investing in a vacuum mop, so you can combine two chores into one.

How Do I Clean the TV Without Leaving Streaks On the Screen?

Though glass cleaners and all-purpose sprays are great for cleaning surfaces like mirrors, tabletops, and other home areas, your computer and TV screens require different care. If you’re wondering how to clean the TV without leaving any streaks, a cleaning spray specifically made for screens will be your best bet. There are a ton of great eco-friendly screen cleaning products that clean everything from laptops to tablets, televisions, and other electronic devices. Whichever product you choose though, a screen cleaner should be part of your regular cleaning arsenal.

How Do I Clean My Cell Phone?

Take a second and think about how frequently you touch your phone. Often, we’re typing on it with dirty hands, pressing the phone up to our skin when we make phone calls, letting it sit at the bottom of bags or inside pockets… your cell phone touches a lot of surfaces. Which means you should be cleaning it often—once a week at the very most, but ideally once a day. Verizon recommends using an antibacterial cloth or a 70% isopropyl alcohol swab and gently wiping down the outside of your cell phone and phone case. Make sure to avoid letting moisture into any ports. This way, your phone stays sanitized and you minimize the risk of germs spreading onto other surfaces in your home.

How Do I Keep the Litter Box from Smelling?

Litter box odor solutions can seem like a dead end. Sometimes, it feels like no matter what you do, the smell will always linger. We’re here to help you change that. The type of kitty litter you use often has an affect on how it holds onto smells. Clay-based and non-clumping litters are the least effective at trapping smells, while plant-based, silica-based, and clumping litter have better odor control. Apart from your litter, though, cleaning the litter box daily and washing the litter box once a month, and sprinkling baking soda inside of the litter box are surefire ways to get your litter box odor-free. One of our editors also recommends using the Zero Odor Litter Box spray to help keep stinks at bay.

Where Should I Really Be Dusting?

Your regular dusting schedule and your deep clean dusting schedule will vary. It may seem like an insignificant task, but dusting regularly can help prevent sicknesses, reduce allergies, and help keep your entire home clean. Think about the surfaces that get frequent use or spaces that get more traffic, like the kitchen, living room, bedroom, and dining room. Where you should be dusting in your house regularly often comes down to where you spend the most time. So surfaces in these rooms should get a weekly wipe-down and thorough surface dusting. Sparkle and Shine says dusting places like windowsills, door frames, ceiling fans, and walls can be done less frequently, when you give your house a good deep cleaning.

I Don’t Want to Use Harsh Chemicals. How Can I Clean Sustainably?

If you’re someone who opts for eco-friendly cleaners or hacks that use household items to disinfect, you’re not alone! Around here, we love utilizing eco-conscious swaps whenever we can, especially with pets and kids in the house. There are a few items that you should always have laying around that will work on almost anything: baking soda, distilled white vinegar, dish soap, and rubbing alcohol. Consider making your own garbage disposal bombs using vinegar and lemon peels, or tackling the bathtub drain with baking soda and white vinegar. Sustainable cleaning options are abundant, and often, just as effective as cleaning with chemicals.

There’s an unspoken rule in the world of organizing that the smaller the space, the more important the creative storage solutions. So when it comes to a spot that’s as high-traffic (and jam-packed) as your closet, it’s essential to choose to right items to keep things streamlined. After all, a cluttered closet can feel chaotic and make mornings and evenings more frustrating. But with the best small closet organization ideas, you can turn even the tiniest wardrobe into a functional, efficient storage space that works with what you have—not against it.

The key to a successful small closet makeover is using products that help maximize vertical space and horizontal space alike. By keeping items visible and carving out a dedicated place for everything, you’re not just doing yourself a favor, but you’re doing your clothes a favor, too. Things like adjustable shelves, hanging organizers, slim hangers, and baskets are all great ways to make the most of a small closet and showcase your wardrobe in an appealing, accessible way. That said, organization isn’t just about being neat. It’s also about creating a system that makes your life easier and less stressful. When your closet is put-together, you save time by knowing exactly where things are and reducing the daily frustration of searching for that one sweater you were thinking about wearing today. So if you’re on the quest for a tidier wardrobe, then you’re in good hands here!

  • Use all available space: From front-to-back, side-to-side, and up-and-down, all space is valuable space in a small closet. Install shelves up high to make use of precious overhead space, and make use of the floor with shoe racks, drawers, or stackable bins.
  • Store seasonal clothes somewhere else: Vacuum-sealed storage bags are a great solution for your out-of-season clothes, as are under-bed bins. Freeing up that valuable real estate allows for more room for the clothes you’ll actually be wearing.
  • Utilize bins and labels: Especially for high-up spots on the shelves, bins with labels can be helpful to house the stuff you don’t need all the time but want to have handy.
  • Group accessories together: In small spaces, small things can tend to get lost easier. Get ahead of it by grouping items like hats, belts, and sunglasses together in zones with baskets, drawers, hooks, or labeled bins where you can easily reach for and find them.
  • Double-up your rods: Hanging an extension rod in your closet is the easiest way to double your available hanging space and truly maximize your storage. It’s super easy to install, too—simply hook it onto your existing rod, and voilà! Just be sure to double check the weight limit on your existing rod first.
  • Install drawers and cubbies: The floor of your closet doesn’t have to just be a dumping ground for shoes and dirty clothes. Make it useful with storage drawers and cubbies that can hold everything from shoes to baskets of scarves, and more.

Display and Protect Shoes With Stackable Boxes

The Container Store X-Large Drop-Front Shoe Box, Set of 6

The Container Store

02

Use 5-Tier Hangers to Maximize Space

Zober 5-Tier Skirt Hangers with Clips

Amazon

$19.48

When you’re working with a narrow closet, you only have so much space for hanging clothes, and many items (like skirts or shorts) take up far more room stored horizontally than they do vertically. To help, snag a set of tiered hangers with clips, which will allow you to “stack” several pieces on top of one another for maximal storage potential.

03

Tuck Away Seasonal Clothes With Vacuum Bags

Cozy Essentials Vacuum Storage Bags, 20-Pack

Amazon

$19.99

Sometimes, the key to a more functional closet is simply reducing the amount of stuff you’re trying to fit inside. If you don’t rotate your wardrobe seasonally, you’re clogging up your available closet space with items you don’t even look at (let alone wear) for part of the year. Instead, use these vacuum-sealed storage bags to tightly pack away out-of-season gear. They’ll reduce clothing bulk and make it easier for you to store everything from sweaters and jackets to extra pillows and blankets.

04

Organize Sweaters With Shelf Dividers

HBlife Clear Shelf Dividers, 6-Pack

Amazon

$21.99

When organizing a small space, it’s important to choose storage solutions that don’t add additional congestion (either physically or visually). These clear acrylic panels are the ideal pick for a closet with shelves, to help divide and tidy the space. With slots that easily latch onto the base of your shelf, each divider will help keep your items organized easily. Now, your sweaters can be neatly folded in place next to your handbags or accessory bin.

05

Squeeze In More Clothes With Slim Hangers

Zober Velvet Hangers, 50-Pack

Amazon

$26.99

Hangers might not be the first thing you think of when you think of small closet organizing, but using uniform, slim design hangers can be a sneaky way to score more storage! Our suggestion? Pick up a pack of these velvet hangers. Their slender design means they won’t add extra bulk, so you can hang more clothing items. Even better, the velvet acts like a non-slip grip, helping your garment stay on the hanger.

06

Use Slide-Out Organizers for Bulky Items

SNSLXH Stackable Closet Organizer Box, 5-Pack

Amazon

$59.99

But with these stackable organizer boxes, you can mimic the feel of dresser drawer organization in a small closet. Customize your storage and arrange them in whatever layout you’d like. At 13 inches wide and 7 inches deep, they’re big enough to house a stack of shirts or a pile of jeans, and can even slide out like a traditional drawer.

10

Use a Soft-Sided Shoe Organizer

Rebrilliant Creline 10-Pair Hanging Shoe Organizer

Wayfair

11

Skip the Bulky Hamper and Opt for a Bag

Household Essentials Door Hanging Laundry Bag

Amazon

$22.69

Keeping your closet organized isn’t just about hanging up your clothes neatly—it also means tending to your dirty clothes. This hanging version won’t take up any floor space in your closet and is easy to carry to the machine when you’re ready to tackle your chores.

12

Make Use of Vertical Shoe Storage

Yamazaki Home Steel Shoe Rack

Amazon

$65.00

A narrow closet means floor space is at a premium, so you’ll probably have to get creative when it comes to your shoe storage. Most shoe racks take up the entire floor of your closet, but this Yamazaki rack goes tall instead of wide, with enough shelves to hold five pairs of shoes.

13

Keep Your Extras Organized With a Pocket Hanger

The Container Store

$11.90

14

Use a Belt Hanger to Corral Them

OMHOMETY Belt Hanger

Amazon

$8.49

It can be hard to find a smart way to store your belts. Either you roll them up and shove them in a drawer, or drape them over a hanger and hope they don’t end up on the ground. What you really need is this carousel-like hanger, which uses eight hooks to neatly arrange your belts on the clothing rack bar in your closet. Each hook can hold up to three, bringing the entire capacity of this piece to an impressive 24 belts, all in one space-saving hanger.

15

Set Up a Chic Clothing Rack

What is the cheapest way to organize a small closet?

Organizing your small closet can take some creativity, but it doesn’t have to be expensive. It’s all about investing in the right products and planning ahead.

  1. Make use of all available space—horizontally and vertically. You’d be surprised at how much a few shelves at the top of your closet can store.
  2. Use tools that work for you. If you have one solitary bar to hang your clothes on and nothing else below or above, it’s time to change that! You can use affordable closet drawers, shelves, wall hooks, and more to make your tiny space more useful.
  3. Remember to consolidate where you can. All of those out-of-season clothes and jackets? Put them in a vacuum-sealed bag and store them somewhere safe in their off season. This frees up so much space for the clothes you’ll actually wear in the next few months.

No matter the size of your bedroom, it’s a space where every design decision—and every piece of furniture—needs to work hard. That’s why organization here is especially important! But if you’re limited on square footage or your layout calls for a creative solution, it can be hard to find the right furniture to contain the clutter and keep your space organized. But turning to the best beds with storage can help.

Your day begins and ends in the bedroom, and those morning routines and nighttime rituals require a lot of stuff. But storage beds offer a sleek, built-in solution that takes up zero extra space. While under-bed storage bins can be a solution for some, and additional dressers can help contain the mess for others, these storage options aren’t for everyone. Our top picks for modern storage beds below offer a streamlined, stylish solution instead, with camouflaged upholstered drawers or lift-up platforms that make accessing your extras easier than ever.

01

Dawson Storage Bed

Castlery

$1,559.00

The Dawson storage bed from Castlery has an unsuspecting style to it—you’d never guess that it doubles as a savvy storage spot. The low-profile upholstered frame looks chic and modern, while the gas-lift function makes accessing your stored items easy while still keeping them safe from damage. For busy households, the bed doesn’t just look good—it functions well, too. The linen-blend frame and headboard covers are both removable (and machine-washable!) so you don’t have to bat an eye at spills or stains. One happy 5-star reviewer writes, “I’ve wanted the Dawson bed for a long time but was honestly scared it wouldn’t look as good in real life. It absolutely does. The proportions are beautiful and the low profile makes the room feel elevated and modern. The upholstery looks clean and tailored, not cheap. It feels solid and high quality. If you’ve been debating it like I was, it’s worth it.”

02

Vanessa Upholstered Storage Bed

West Elm

$2,999.00

The Vanessa upholstered storage bed from West Elm is a statement piece. The oversized headboard and footboard, along with the soft, textured fabric, help the bed command attention while still looking cozy and comfortable. It comes with four sizable drawers—two on each side—for plenty of discreet storage space. Choose from two fabric colors (brown or cream), versatile enough to fit any bedroom scheme and adapt as your style changes, too.

03

Jenny Lind Maple Wood Spindle Kids Full Storage Bed

Crate & Kids

$1,899.00

It can be difficult to find storage solutions that blend in with the kids’ bedrooms without taking up more space than necessary. But with all the stuffies, blankets, books, and Labubus they have scattered around the room, it can feel like a never-ending journey to keep their space organized. A storage bed like this can really come in handy for situations like this. Because the three storage drawers are built right into the frame, you don’t have to worry about their favorite action figure getting lost under the bed. Plus, the spindle design is a timeless style that’ll stick with them through any bedroom phase for years to come.

04

Lenia Queen Panel Storage Bed

Article

$2,199.00

Article is known for its sleek yet functional furniture, and the Lenia storage bed is a great example of that. Crafted from solid oak and available in both queen and king sizes, this tailored frame offers plentiful storage at the base via two roomy pull-out drawers on tracks. The mid-century modern silhouette—featuring tapered legs and a simple paneled headboard—pairs beautifully with any decor style, while the soft-close drawers provide ample storage for extra blankets, seasonal clothes, or even toiletries. “We searched high and low, and I am so happy we ended up with this bed—I could not recommend it more!” says one happy reviewer. “The only point I would make is that, if you plan on using the drawers closest to the headboard, just consider your nightstand situation…we will likely be ordering the floating nightstands next.”

05

Emmett Pop-Up Storage Bed

West Elm

$2,199.00

While many storage beds come with drawers at the base, that’s not your only option. With clean lines, a fully upholstered body, and a flexible size run (it comes in everything from a twin and full to a California king), the Emmett bed brings softness and comfort to your bedroom. But the real magic happens below. Instead of drawers, the entire mattress platform lifts via hydraulics to reveal a cavernous storage space beneath. Best used for seasonal items you’ll need to access only occasionally, this clever solution is great for narrow spaces or anyone who wants the look of a traditional bed.

06

Amara Curved Upholstered King Storage Bed

CB2

$2,999.00

With a trendy scalloped headboard, this upholstered bed frame from Crate and Barrel combines the best of style and storage into one aesthetic piece. The base includes three built-in drawers—one on each side and one at the foot of the bed—that look completely seamless thanks to the frame’s plush upholstery. Crafted from responsibly sourced acacia wood and available in over 200 different fabric options, this piece can be tailored to your style while making organizing your bedroom infinitely easier.

07

Dalton Storage Bed

Castlery

$1,699.00

A high sleigh back and plush upholstered drawers make the Dalton bed a dramatic and practical option for anyone who needs a bit of extra storage space in their bedroom. It’s available in five different sizes and has three drawer options (including an elongated one at the front) that open and close smoothly for easy daily access. “I absolutely love this queen-size storage bed,” one reviewer says. “It’s the perfect addition to my first home. It holds so much and cuts down on the need for additional furniture.”

08

Allewie Lift Up Storage Bed

Amazon

$219.98

With almost 1,000 five-star reviews on Amazon and an approachable price point under $300, the Allewie storage bed is a great option for anyone looking to upgrade their bedroom on a budget. Available in three sizes and several different fabrics (including yellow, blue-gray, and crisp white), it lifts via hydraulic levers to reveal an unobstructed storage compartment underneath the mattress. Though you can access this spot daily if necessary, it’s better for storing bulk items like out-of-season sweaters and luggage. “This bed exceeded my expectations,” a recent buyer says. “It was relatively easy to assemble, with clear instructions and all the parts fitting together well. The lift-up storage is the real winner—it’s spacious and incredibly easy to open thanks to the hydraulic shocks. The design looks modern and clean, and the wingback headboard gives it a nice, elegant touch. Overall, a great bed with tons of convenient storage. Highly recommend!”

09

The Classic Bed

Thuma

$1,995.00

Thuma is known for their simple, straightforward designs, and one of their most iconic beds boasts the ability to be upgraded with underbed storage drawers. Made from 100% upcycled wood and available in six different sizes (and four different wood finishes), this chic piece helps you preserve a sleek, low-profile look while sneaking in added function. Hidden caster wheels allow for smooth sliding, and the drawers can be added on whenever you’d like, so there’s no pressure to purchase everything all at once. Bonus: This piece has a whopping 17,000+ five-star reviews, so there’s no doubting it’s a worthy buy. “I absolutely love my new bed frame from Thuma,” one happy customer says. “The quality is amazing, and everything looks even better in person. I was so impressed with how quickly it arrived—just two days after I ordered. Everything was well packaged and easy to assemble. Overall, a great experience and product.”

10

Auburn Wood Storage Bed

Castlery

$1,999.00

Another great pick from Castlery, this cocooning storage bed is covered from base to headboard in nubby bouclé fabric for a cozy vibe. Instead of storage drawers, the Auburn model uses a gas-lift mechanism to elevate the mattress platform and reveal the storage compartment beneath. Expansive and deep, it’s the ideal spot to stash clothes, extra paper goods, or even the birthday presents you’re struggling to hide from your children. Choose from a king or queen size and a fabric or wood base to customize the look to your needs.

11

Jake Wood Base Storage Bed

Pottery Barn

$2,599.00

Part practical, part coastal-inspired, this aesthetic bed from Pottery Barn means you won’t have to sacrifice style for function. Available in four different size options and 54 of Pottery Barn’s most stunning fabrics, the Jake storage bed offers a seamless way to store extra clothes, with enough room that you may even be able to get rid of that extra dresser. Each side boasts two roomy drawers built into the rails, which practically disappear when closed thanks to plush upholstery and a sleek wood base that makes everything appear seamless.

12

Hampton Storage Bed

Pottery Barn Teen

$2,299.00

Kids have a lot of stuff, so storage beds are a great option for keeping their rooms clean and organized. This PBTeen bed comes in two sizes—full and queen—as well as four different wood finishes, providing a classic yet casual look that will grow with them as they age. The two integrated drawers have pulls included for easy use. Love the look? This line also has nightstands and a dresser for a totally coordinated design.

13

Maxwell Upholstered Bed with Storage

Interior Define

$2,525.00

Another lift-platform style, this chic upholstered bed from Interior Define lives much larger than its price tag. Like all Interior Define products, it comes in a stunning selection of upholstery options, including luxe velvets, casual linen, nubby textures, and more. Though you’ll wait a bit longer for this bed due to the custom production options, it’s worth the wait—and the extra storage.

14

Latitude Run Hydraulic Lift Storage Upholstered Platform Bed With Storage Headboard

Wayfair

$400.00

This budget-friendly Wayfair piece takes standard storage and dials it up a notch. Not only does it feature a massive storage spot beneath the bed platform, but the headboard panel also folds down to reveal a shallow-but-useful hidden shelf where you can keep everything from extra tech to your ever-growing pile of books. Choose from three different size options and five fabrics, including a gorgeous olive green and on-trend brown. “The underbed storage is a game changer—spacious, easy to access, and the hydraulic lift works smoothly without much effort,” says one happy buyer. “I love that it has a mesh cover underneath to keep everything clean and protected. The headboard storage is another great feature, perfect for keeping books, a water bottle, or even a few decorative items within reach.”

There are tons of furniture and decor stores out there, but few are as beloved as IKEA. The Swedish home furnishings giant has earned a reputation for its affordable, stylish items, which cover everything from storage and organization to lighting, kitchenware, and outdoor essentials. The one downside to their vast array of offerings, though, is simply knowing what’s worth your money—especially when you’re shopping in person at one of their large warehouses. So, our editors are stepping in to help guide you through the greatest hits in the catalog, calling out the best IKEA products that have stood the test of time in our very own homes.

Dressers, bookshelves, closet systems, and even tablecloths are included in our picks, with prices starting at as low as $20. And remember that one of the best parts about IKEA products is that you can oftentimes customize them to suit your needs. For example, you’ll find the popular KALLAX shelf unit not once, but twice on our list. Why? Because you can use it as a bookcase, office storage, a media console, or even a sideboard in a dining room. You can swap the hardware on many of their dresser models to showcase your style. And IKEA light fixtures are so versatile, many can be hung on the wall or placed on a nightstand—your choice. These finds are truly multifunctional, which makes them an excellent choice when you need a quick, easy, and budget-friendly refresh.

01

GODISHUS Wardrobe

IKEA

$199.99

“I live in a New York City apartment, so it’s safe to say I’m always on the hunt for clever storage solutions. In this specific instance, I needed an extra coat closet in a bad way. Even though this is technically in the kids’ section, it fits perfectly into my tight corner and holds about 20 of my jackets and coats (including a thick faux fur). It also has a shelf that I use for shoes and items I want to keep out of sight. Plus, it looks great and blends seamlessly with the rest of my closet. The real cherry on top? It was easy to assemble with no power tools, all on my own.” —Megan Stein, Editorial Director

02

HEMNES Bookcase

IKEA

$279.00

“Let’s be honest—there’s a reason we all love IKEA. It’s stylish, it’s fun…and it doesn’t wreck your budget. I picked up this sleek little bookcase on a whim, thinking it would be a cute, temporary fix for my bedroom. It’s slim, so it doesn’t hog space, and it perfectly shows off my favorite books, photos, and little keepsakes. What I didn’t expect? Staying power. I bought it FIFTEEN years ago. Since then, it’s moved with me across three states and through countless room rearranges—and it’s still going strong. Affordable and built to last? That’s a win-win.” —Erica Brown, Social Media Director

03

KALLAX 8-Shelf Unit

IKEA

$79.99

“All you vinyl nerds out there will already know about this shelf. It can look a little generic, but if you get a non-white version, it works (especially once it’s full of your stuff). It is really tough to find suitable shelves to house records and these fit vinyl records perfectly—something most coveted by collectors. These also work well for kids shelves due to the storage basket and bin options IKEA manufactures that can fit snugly into the shelves. The storage shelves are a great way to hide clutter and keep things looking nice and neat. Something all parents out there most desperately desire.” —Jim Bertoni, Art Director

04

PAX Wardrobe System

IKEA

$0.00

“My favorite IKEA product is the PAX Wardrobe System. While a closet solution isn’t the most sexy product in the catalog, it well makes up for lack of pizazz with product design excellence. With hundreds of components that all fit together smartly, PAX is ecosystem design at its best: both highly flexible and deeply satisfying. I have PAX elements in no fewer than five diverse areas of my home, from a traditional wardrobe closet, to office and design studio storage, bathroom cabinetry, a basement workbench, and an outdoor potting shed. Setting up the various drawers, inserts, shelving and other accessories is intuitive and scratches that organizational itch, both on installation day, and for years to come.” —Katie Noyes, Creative Director

05

FADO Table Lamp

IKEA

$29.99

“In our house, overhead lighting is a no-no. So it’s essential to have soft mood lighting like this lamp. I use a smart bulb in mine and it’s set to a pale pink which is such a nice light source in the evenings when I’m trying to wind down.” —Aly Nagel, Community Manager

06

HEMNES 3-Drawer Dresser

IKEA

$299.99

“I bought this solid wood dresser for one of my first apartments and it never failed me. I had it for over four years, and only resold it because I wanted to change up my bedroom decor when I moved. That said, I think this is a really lovely piece that can work in most spaces, from a chic primary suite to an adorable kids’ room. It’s a very versatile option with strong long-term value.” —Megan

07

KALLAX 16-Shelf Unit

IKEA

$179.99

“Even though Jim stole my all-time favorite KALLAX shelving as his pick earlier, I had to actually mention it again because it’s really that notable. I have had the black-brown KALLAX storage unit as a bookshelf for over 20 years, and it has survived several moves including across the country and back in that time. It’s a sturdy workhorse that exudes Scandinavian minimalism and won’t break the bank.” —Barb Dybwad, Strategy & Operations Director

08

RÅSKOG Utility Cart

IKEA

$39.99

“When I think of versatility, this utility cart immediately comes to mind. I’ve used it as a bar cart in the past (and in fact my former roommate is still using it—nine years later). But it would be just as handy in the kitchen, craft room, kids’ room, garage, or any spot where you need that extra level of organization. Bonus points for its extremely affordable price tag and its choice of three colors, though I had this nice blue in my home.” —Megan

09

SVARTSENAP Tablecloth

IKEA

$17.99

“These are stylish and don’t break the bank. Kind of like everything from IKEA come to think of it. I have two children and we go through a tablecloth each night. I bought three of these and three of the green (though, sadly, it looks like the green is not available anymore). What I like about these is because of the thread, stains are well-hidden so as to hide my not-so-perfect-life.” —Jim

10

BILLY Bookcase

IKEA

$59.00

“The BILLY bookcase is a classic for a reason. It’s inexpensive, comes in a ton of finishes, is narrow enough for small spaces (though they offer larger versions, too), and looks simple and chic. IKEA also sells doors and other accessories for this unit, if you want to integrate closed storage or other custom options as well.” —Megan

When Jonathan and Zooey first toured their New York City apartment, it was anything but love at first sight. “I’ve always had the ability to walk into a space and imagine what it could be instantly,” Jonathan says. “But we had our work cut out for us with this place.” Popcorn ceilings; stark white walls; zero personality—that’s not the description you’d expect to hear for Jonathan and Zooey’s dream apartment. But through the weathered walls and crooked layout, they saw a vision of what the space could be. And it was going to have to be a full-scale renovation unlike any other.

“The most important thing for Zooey and me is that a space tells a story, and truly represents its owners,” Jonathan says. “We don’t like boring. We wanted everything from the custom furniture to the wallpaper to the lighting fixtures to feel exquisite.”

Sure, they basically had to start from scratch crafting their perfectly detailed maximalist interior from top to bottom: restructuring the layout; adding in elaborate millwork and custom plaster molding; curating a design scheme that balanced an array of texture, color, pattern, form, and sheen; and an endless laundry list of other to-dos in order to make it into the home of their dreams. But they knew they could turn this blank slate into something truly remarkable. And the challenge was half the fun.

So today, Jonathan is taking us on an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour, walking us through his style secrets and the backstory on all the work that went into renovating their remarkable New York City duplex. You can watch the full video above to get the scoop on everything you want to know, and explore more of the stories behind the design below.

Designing Over a Blank Slate

Transforming the early 1900s turn-of-the-century apartment into the ornate, maximalist family home they wanted it to be was no easy feat. Especially considering the unit itself was more like a dull 1980s office space than a beautiful Victorian or early Craftsman. Jonathan and Zooey wanted to infuse historic character back into the space and recreate the Old World charm that had been lost along the way. With soaring 15-foot ceilings and large-scale windows with natural light typically unheard of in New York City, they knew they wanted to make the home something extraordinary.

While the couple was renovating their Los Angeles home, the Park House, they wanted the 1930s Georgian revival to feel like a true bonding of their style and an homage to the original architect, Gerard Colcord. It was their first home together, and it’s a spectacular display of their taste. “LA was a real learning experience for us. It’s the first place we renovated together as a couple, and we learned a lot,” Jonathan says. But in their NYC apartment, they wanted to go bolder; be more daring in their design. Elaborate pattern mixing. Hand-drawn murals. Ornate embroidered wallpaper. “We wanted to push the boundaries of what we did in our Los Angeles home, and include even more handcrafted elements, vintage pieces, and artisanal touches,” Jonathan says.

Finding the Right Co-Designer

The Manhattan duplex is a testament to Jonathan and Zooey’s unique taste and their commitment to family—a celebration of their relationship and the special parts of it that make it their own. But to pull off a project of this scale while living on the opposite coast, they needed someone local who they could trust to manage critical components when they weren’t there. They found the perfect partner in renowned designer Young Huh. “I spoke with Young and we instantly hit it off,” Jonathan says. “Her attention to detail and her love for elegant, traditional design was exactly what we were looking for.”

Young understood their vision completely. “They wanted to incorporate a sense of history and beautiful decoration and the top request was that there be nothing modern,” she says. “Both of them love color and are fearless in exploring pattern and creativity.”

Together, Jonathan and Zooey collaborated with Young and spent nearly five years crafting their artisanal New York City pied-à-terre. But all that time and hard work was more than well worth it. “Collaborating with them was a complete joy. There was so much good creative energy flowing between us,” Young says.

It’s All In the Details

Lively patterns, romantic lighting, moody colors—every element mattered to Jonathan and Zooey. “Here, we decided that all of the fabrics would tell a story—all of the patterns and prints would really grab you when you walked in,” Jonathan says. “And so you’ll see that here—every decision and every room has something to say.”

“They have an incredibly keen eye for design and style,” Young says. “And no one, absolutely no one has Jonathan’s eagle eye for detail. He can detect if something is off an eighth of an inch with just his eye! That was pretty awe-inspiring.”

That “eagle eye” made all the difference, as each room now has its own sense of emotion and story. “When you walk into the entry you are surrounded by joy,” Young says. “The kitchen, living room, and dining room express conviviality and verve. There is a good deal of romance in the outdoor terraces, and their books, art, and decorative objects have a lot of meaning.”

But the handcrafted detail doesn’t stop at the interior. Their three private terraces each have markedly distinct designs, from the kids’ playful elephant topiary to the beautiful latticework in their French-inspired garden outside the living room. They wanted to hint to Los Angeles here, and make the exterior areas of the apartment feel just as lush as the interior.

Traditional Design, Modern Upgrades

Jonathan and Zooey knew they wanted to go with a more intricate, traditional design when it came to their style choices, but they also wanted to incorporate modern-day upgrades when it came to functional items in the house. Combining the two took some creative thinking, but they were able to work with Young to find pieces that hit everything they wanted, both stylistically and functionally.

Take the kitchen, for example. Jonathan and Zooey knew they wanted upscale and high-quality appliances from retailers like JennAir, but found a way to seamlessly blend them into the design with cabinetry. And the oven resembles an antique artisan fixture—between the patina on the copper detailing on the range and hood to the striking matte black finish—for the perfect combination of function and form.

Jacob Snavely

But it’s not just the kitchen that gets the fun and functional treatment. Their entertaining spaces also blend their family’s favorite activities with thoughtful design. There are automatic projector screens that descend from the living room ceilings for cozy movie nights without a bulky TV set disrupting the aesthetic. A custom karaoke setup is hidden in a beautiful cabinet, but remains easy to pull out at every dinner party or night in with the kids. And the standout piece is a beautiful grand piano that Zooey can record songs on for Jonathan to hear back later.

“I love Zooey’s music, and coming home to hear her playing. Having a player piano where she can record songs that I can listen to while she’s away makes that even easier,” Jonathan says. “Some of my favorite She & Him songs for her to play are ‘I Thought I Saw Your Face Today’, ‘Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?’ and ‘I Could’ve Been Your Girl’.”

There’s also plenty of sleek hidden tech that helps keep their home operating at all levels while they’re away.  “I made sure to incorporate some helpful technologies we love about our LA house into our NYC place, like smart panels and AI-driven leak detection with auto-shut off,” Jonathan says. “Going back and forth between our homes on either coast, we don’t want to be susceptible to any kind of damage while we’re gone, so I can remotely monitor everything from our security to our energy and water use. And the nice thing is it’s all hidden away, so you wouldn’t even notice the tech is there.”

Lighting Takes Effect

Jonathan, Zooey, and Young all champion the effect lighting has on a space (especially with Zooey’s father being a distinguished cinematographer). They took their time combing through antique stores, furniture markets, and lighting designers like Visual Comfort & Co. to find the perfect fixtures for the space—like the stunning Murano glass chandelier in the dining room, the floral ironwork pendant in the foyer, or the beautiful vine clad sconces in the family room.

“Lighting is incredibly important. We knew that we wanted to have some really grand statement fixtures,” he says. “But with the smaller footprint of the apartment, we wanted to ensure that it still felt balanced, and there weren’t too many fixtures clashing with one another. To prevent that, we mixed things up—so you’ll see pendants, chandeliers, and sconces all playing their part to make it a more interesting lighting design.”

Home Sweet Home

Today, Jonathan and Zooey finally have that perfect home base that’s as unique and exciting as the city itself. They put their all into turning the apartment into a place that felt like them: bold, colorful, romantic, and interesting.

“We don’t like a boring, modern space,” Jonathan says. “I love it when somebody says to me, ‘I have never seen something like that before.’ That is music to my ears.”

Achieving the vision they originally set out for was not easy—but through patience, planning, and creativity, they were able to curate a metropolitan haven unlike any other.

Bonus: Maximalist Design Tips from Young

Maximalist design can be so rewarding—but making a variety of colors, patterns, and finishes all marry together to look intentional and curated can feel like a tall order, especially if you don’t know where to begin. “Start by picking your favorite colors, fabrics, and finishes, and put them together on a table,” Young says. “Do they all look good together and do they make you feel excited? Try to imagine how those items will look in the room.”

Creating mood boards and comparing fabric samples, wallpaper squares, and paint chips are all great ways to get the creative juices flowing—but ultimately, curating a maximalist design in your own home comes down to creating a space that feels authentically you. There’s no formula for your unique personality, so go with what makes your space feel like yours. “You just have to love all the things you choose together,” Young says.

With warmer weather on the horizon, you’re probably compiling a list of everything you want to spruce up around your home before spring hits. While you likely already have the usual culprits on your radar—think deep-cleaning grout, refreshing and rotating your mattresses, or shining up your windows—other, less-noticed corners of your home could also use a little TLC. One such spot you might be wondering about? How to clean your fans. After all, they’re the unsung heroes of warm-weather comfort, and something you’ll likely rely on with increasing frequency in the coming months. But, while they’re pros at circulating air and keeping you cool, they’re also great at collecting dust, pollen, and pet hair. As that buildup accumulates on your fan blades (and, in some cases, on your covers), it can trigger your allergies and make your fan work less effectively.

Thankfully, giving your fan a good, deep clean is relatively easy, whether it’s a box fan, tower fan, or ceiling fan. In general, it’s a good idea to clean your fans at the beginning and end of the warm-weather seasons and maintain periodic dusting throughout the spring and summer. Below, we’re diving into the how-to for cleaning every type of fan so you can breathe easy—and stay cool—all season long.

A quick note: Before diving in, you should always check your item’s manual to see if the manufacturer has any specific instructions or suggested products to use when cleaning. You can usually find PDFs of these online if you threw out your paper copy.

Bedroom Hub

how to clean a box fan

Box fans are powerful and effective, but they can be notoriously dusty, thanks in large part to the front and back panels that make it difficult to dust off the blades. A detailed clean should keep your fan in good working order throughout most of the spring and summer, but you’ll want to clean it more frequently if you have pets or live in an area with high pollen counts.

Materials:

Screwdriver

Microfiber cloth or cotton rag

Mild dish soap

-Soft brush, like an old toothbrush or dish brush

-Warm water

Steps:

1. Unplug your fan, then move it to an area where you can spread out the pieces, like a kitchen island, dining table, garage, or driveway.

2. Using a screwdriver fitted with the proper head, remove the front and back grills of the fan. Set the parts in a labeled container or bag to ensure you don’t lose any or get confused when reassembling.

3. With the microfiber cloth, wipe away any loose dust. If your fan is particularly dusty or hasn’t been used in a while, you can also vacuum up any debris with a handheld nozzle.

4. Using warm water and mild dish soap, wash the front and back grills of the fan, soaking them in the soapy water for a few minutes, if necessary, before scrubbing gently with a brush. Set aside to dry.

5. Wet the microfiber cloth with warm water and mild soap, then carefully wipe the blades of the fan to remove any lingering dust or pollen.

6. Dry all pieces thoroughly and reassemble.

how to clean a tower fan

Tower fans are a bit more complicated to clean, as they’re often tougher to take apart and may include other parts, like an oscillating mechanism. If helpful, take a few pictures of your fan assembled before taking it apart so you know how to put it back together. And especially for this model, check your manufacturer’s manual before you begin to see if they have specific cleaning instructions.

Materials:

Screwdriver

Microfiber cloth or cotton rag

Mild all-purpose cleaner

Can of compressed air

-Vacuum equipped with a brush or crevice tool

Steps:

1. Unplug your fan, then move it outdoors or to a garage or basement, where floating dust and debris won’t dirty your home.

2. Using a vacuum equipped with a brush or crevice tool, pull out as much dust as possible from the interior cavity of the fan; use the brush on the exterior grills to free up any dust.

3. If necessary, use a can of compressed air to blow residual dust out of the interior of the fan.

4. Wipe down the exterior of the fan, including the grills, with a microfiber cloth and mild all-purpose cleaner.

5. If you desire a deeper clean, you may be able to remove the back of your fan using a screwdriver to achieve a more thorough cleaning. If you do, make sure to vacuum out the interiors, wipe off any blades with a microfiber cloth, and let everything dry before reassembling the piece.

Bedroom Hub

dirty ceiling fan

Ceiling fans are notorious dust collectors, and they can cause real issues for anyone with allergies. Here’s how to clean one without creating a major dust storm below.

Materials:

-Stool or step ladder

Clean pillowcase

Microfiber cloth

Mild all-purpose cleaner

Steps:

1. Turn off your fan. For an extra safety precaution, you can turn off the power to the piece at your breaker.

2. Using a clean pillowcase, slip it over each blade, and “pull” the case down the fan blade, wicking away dust and capturing it in the pillowcase (instead of having it fall to the floor). Carefully rotate the fan blades with your hands and complete on each one.

3. Spray your microfiber cloth with all-purpose cleaner, then use it to gently wipe off any remaining dust or debris on the fan blades. Be careful not to apply too much pressure to the blades and never trust them to support your weight.

4. While you’re up there, clean any additional parts of the fan, like the motor/grills, pull string, or light bulbs/shades.

5. Vacuum the floor below and dust any nearby surfaces to capture any loose dust.

Is the “organized chaos” in your home starting to feel like, well, just… Chaos? Whether your bedroom chair (you know the one) is overflowing with clothes or your closet just needs a quick refresh, the best bedroom organization ideas can help bring a sense of order and calm to your space. From using storage baskets to corral pillows and throws to refreshing your bookshelves so they double as decor, these simple ideas are proof that a few small adjustments can completely change how your room functions.

Ahead, you’ll find some of our favorite storage solutions that are equal parts smart and stylish, plus easy strategies to help you maximize your bedroom layout and simplify the way you use your space every day. In fact, once you put these clever bedroom organizing ideas into practice, you may find that your whole house feels like it’s running better—because when everything has a place, everything else falls into place.

Bedroom Hub

We get it—getting organized can feel overwhelming. But with these clever tips and techniques, you can bring order back to your bedroom, one step at a time.

Edit by zone, not by item.
Instead of tackling items by category, work through the room one area at a time. Move from your nightstand, to your closet, to your dresser, and so on. Focusing on one zone at a time makes it easier to see your progress and prevents clutter from getting shifted elsewhere.

Create a seasonal rotation system.
Keep only current-season clothing and bedding within easy reach, and store the rest elsewhere. Swapping items out every few months frees up space and keeps drawers from overflowing. It’s also especially helpful in smaller bedrooms that lack large closets.

Use the “one-touch” reset rule.
Try not to set things down temporarily. Instead, put them where they belong immediately. That extra few seconds saves you from piles building up on dressers or chairs. Over time, this simple habit keeps the room consistently tidy.

Group daily essentials together.
Items you reach for every day, like glasses, chargers, skincare, and books, should live in one accessible spot like a desk, vanity, or nightstand. Creating a dedicated landing zone cuts down on surface clutter and frantic, last-minute searching. It also helps promote a calmer nighttime routine.

Do nightly resets.
A quick tidy every night before bed or even just a few times per week will help keep things in order. Put dirty clothes in the laundry, return items to their proper places, and clear surfaces so you can wake up to a cleaner, calmer space.

Ready to get smart about bedroom storage? It’s all about making your furniture and layout work more efficiently without sacrificing comfort or style. Here are some simple tips for making the most of every square inch:

  • Use vertical storage with hooks or racks to hang accessories like bags and hats.
  • Store infrequently used items in bins or containers under the bed. Bonus points for labeling them so everything is easy to see and grab.
  • Add baskets or boxes on closet shelves to hold smaller items and prevent visual clutter.
  • Repurpose decorative trays to hold jewelry, keys, and other everyday items.
  • Choose multi-purpose furniture with hidden storage, like benches, beds, or ottomans.
  • Use drawer dividers to keep clothing categories separated and easier to maintain.
  • Install floating shelves for books, plants, or decor to free up surface space.

These days, buying a great piece of furniture isn’t as simple as walking into your nearest mall and test-sitting a floor sample. With more and more brick-and-mortar stores closing—and more online-exclusive brands entering the market—there’s a good chance that the couch, chair, or bed frame you fall in love with needs to be purchased online, all without ever seeing it in person.

Having been a design editor for over a decade and recently launching my own interior design firm, I know how to spot a quality piece of furniture when I find one. While buying furniture online can be more difficult than hunting in person, it’s certainly possible to find pieces that are high-quality, durable, and will look beautiful in your home. The key to success? Going in with a critical eye and knowing what (and what not) to look out for.

Below, I’m diving into everything you should consider before clicking “add to cart” on a pricey chair, cute ottoman, or bespoke bench—plus my list of the best online furniture stores to help you get your search started.

Bedroom Hub

Price

Everyone’s comfort levels will differ, but I always suggest shopping at the highest end of your allocated furniture budget. This is one area where, unless you’re thrifting or hunting on Facebook Marketplace, your spend will directly relate to the quality of the piece you purchase. To ensure you don’t fall in love with an item substantially out of your price range (guilty!), use whichever filtering tools a site might have to dial in on your budget.

All that said, there are definitely some places where you can save and still achieve a stylish end result. Smaller pieces (think ottomans or side tables) or anything that will only get occasional use can be a great place to spend a little less money while still giving your room an aesthetic boost.

Origin

In a day where fast furniture reigns supreme, finding an item that’s actually made with durable, quality materials can feel like striking gold. Examining the product description on your chosen piece can clue you into the type of quality you’re getting. As a general rule of thumb, anything made in America (specifically in known furniture hubs like North Carolina, Ohio, Vermont, and Los Angeles) typically indicates higher quality.

Quality Indicators

Speaking of quality, there are other keywords you should keep an eye out for when reading those product descriptions. Look for phrases like “bench made,” “contract-grade,” “kiln-dried,” “dovetail joints,” “multi-density foam,” “hand-tied springs,” or “performance fabric,” all of which can indicate a piece that is thoughtfully made and designed to hold up to daily use.

Size

Size can be super hard to quantify, especially when it comes to furniture. Always shop with measurements in-hand (I like to keep a running list in my Notes app of spots I’m looking to fill!), so you’re never chancing a purchase without knowing for sure if something will fit in your living room—or through your doorway, for that matter.

Reviews

Not every store or piece of furniture you shop for will have product reviews on its site, and that’s ok. In general, I think of reviews as nice to have rather than must-haves; I won’t not buy a piece because there aren’t reviews, but good (or bad) feedback from other shoppers can certainly sway my opinion. It’s often more important to pay attention to reviews when shopping at retailers where the quality tends to oscillate (like Amazon or Wayfair); at more consistent retailers, like Pottery Barn and West Elm, they’re a bit less important.

Bedroom Hub

Assembly

DO read the assembly instructions as carefully as you would the product description. Look for phrases like “tool-free assembly,” “one-person setup,” or a short assembly time listed; all of these can indicate that you’ve found a piece that won’t send you spiraling at 2:00 AM as you try to build it. Whenever possible, look to see if you can find the instruction manual online before you buy. Many brands have their PDFs available online, and a quick skim of it can clue you into exactly how difficult it will be to achieve your finished product. Beyond that, pay special attention to how the major components connect. A sofa with arms that attach to the body can be fine, provided that the hardware is substantial and the attachment points and joints are reinforced.

DON’T assume that a simple-looking piece will be easy to assemble. Skip relying on any tools that come with your furniture assembly kit; instead, have a high-quality tool set on hand for builds, which will make the process run more smoothly (a starter collection that includes a screw driver, Allen wrench, and quality hammer should do the trick). Oh, and be wary of phrases like “some assembly required”—they’re vague for a reason.

Fabrics and Finishes

DO shop with a balance of affordability and durability in mind. You need to go into your hunt with a bit of honesty and self-reflection; if you’re constantly spilling coffee on your couch or have a dog that doesn’t understand the phrase “down,” you’re probably better off skipping the luxe linen in favor of a high-performance fabric. Make peace with the fact that options like performance velvet, microfiber, and tightly woven poly blends are often worth the slight upcharge and will pay off in dividends when it comes to long-term wear. When it comes to finishes, avoid anything that looks too shiny or new; soft brass will typically read much higher-end than a gleaming gold, for example.

DON’T shop for trends that don’t work with your price point. Higher-end finishes like burl wood, decorative veneers, or even nubby boucle can look inexpensive if not executed with craftsmanship in mind, so you’re better off purchasing the best quality piece you can rather than opting for a rough imitation.

Reviews

DO read reviews with a critical—and even skeptical—eye. Plenty of brands incentivise shoppers to leave reviews, either with free product or compensation, so you can’t always trust what you read. A few thoughtful reviews are much more beneficial than thousands of vague five-star ratings, and any time you can find a review not affiliated with the site you’re shopping on (I love Reddit for this), you’ll probably end up with more substantial feedback.

DON’T put too much stake in reviews that sound generic, repeat the same phrases over and over, or don’t deliver on specifics, like fabric feel or firmness. Keep your eye out for any feedback labeled “sponsored” or “gifted,” and look out for any language that feels spam-y. This can include reviews that repeat the same “corporate” keywords, anything that sounds like it was pulled directly from the product listing, or overly vague statements (i.e. “This was great!).

Warranties

DO consider opting into a warranty for any items that you’ll use daily, like a sofa or bed. In that same vein, double-check the return policy; many pieces are final sale (especially if custom), but some allow for a trial period in your home worry-free. It’s also a good idea to note how long your warranty covers you for, any limitations on the warranty, and what happens if your product fails after that point.

DON’T add a warranty to smaller items or anything that’s purely decorative. As a general rule of thumb, you shouldn’t opt in on a warranty that will cost you more than 20% of the product’s purchase price. At that point, you’re better off just putting that money towards a higher-quality item from the jump.

10. Facebook Marketplace

If you take one thing away from this piece, let it be this: Don’t sleep on Facebook Marketplace. I’ve furnished more than half my home with pieces worth thousands that I got for mere pennies, all because I dared to message someone on Facebook Marketplace. While you’re sure to kiss a few frogs in the process, the high of finding a near-perfect bench-made sofa or your white whale antique cabinet just can’t be beat.

Flower vases can do more than just hold blooms—they can elevate them (and your decor, too). That’s exactly why we say that the right flower vase can make all the difference in how an arrangement looks in your space. Whether you’re styling a single stem or a statement bouquet, the size, shape, and material of your vase play a bigger role than you might think. But with so many styles available, it’s not always easy to know where to start.

Some vases, like fishbowl or urn styles, are designed to create lush, full arrangements, while others, like bottleneck or bud vases, are better suited for simpler or more structured bouquets. Beyond function, a great vase should also stand on its own as a decorative object—even when it’s empty, styled on a bookshelf, or used as part of your coffee table decor. This guide explains the most common vase types and breaks down which flowers work best in each, along with styling tips and the best flower vases to shop now. Have questions about how to choose the best vase for your bouquet? Don’t worry—we’re answering those below, too.

Every bouquet deserves a beautiful vase to match, whether you’re styling a single stem or a statement arrangement. To help point you in the right direction, we’ve rounded up the most common vase shapes—from hourglass and urn styles to bud, fishbowl, and beyond—along with tips on when and how to put each one to use.

What shape vase is best for flowers?

In general, there are a variety of vase shapes that can help you create beautiful arrangements. It’s important to remember that the size and shape of your vase—especially how wide the mouth opening is—will impact how full your arrangement looks and how much your stems spread. So if you have a larger vase, you may want to make sure you have a fuller arrangement so it doesn’t end up looking bare.

There are blankets—and then there are blankets that are so soft and snuggly they’ll make you never want to get out of bed. If you haven’t guessed, yes, we’re talking about heated blankets! When winter really settles in, these warm and cozy blankets quickly go from a nice-to-have home good to a full-on winter essential. After all, it’s the easiest (and most affordable!) way to stay warm without cranking the thermostat or piling on extra layers. Whether you’re curling up on the couch for movie night, working from home on a chilly morning, or trying to make a bed or reading nook feel extra inviting, heated blankets bring instant comfort with the flip of a switch.

The best part? Today’s heated blankets are softer, safer, and more stylish than ever. You can find everything from plush fleece throws for the sofa to full-size options for your bed, plus weighted versions for extra comfort. To help you find your perfect match, we’re outlining everything you should look for in a heated blanket, as well as some of the most reliable and highly-rated brands you can buy from. We also rounded up some of our top recommended heated blankets you can purchase online that combine warmth, comfort, and thoughtful features. Winter is long, but you deserve to spend it warm and cozy.

Bedroom Hub

Not all heated blankets are created equal. Before you click “add to cart,” take a moment to consider which of the following features are most important to you.

  1. Size and weight: Throws are perfect for couch snuggling, while full-size blankets work better for beds. For even more warmth, consider trying a weighted heated blanket.
  2. Temperature range and settings: More heat levels give you more control. Whether you run hot, cold, or in between, having multiple settings will help you find your perfect level of coziness.
  3. Automatic shut-off: An automatic timer is a must for any electric blanket. It turns the blanket off after a certain amount of time, so you can drift off to sleep safely and with peace of mind.
  4. Washability: Make sure the blanket is machine washable and that the controller detaches easily. Cozy is great, but cozy and clean is even better.
  5. Heat-up speed: Some blankets warm up in seconds, while others take a few minutes. If patience isn’t your strong suit, opt for a blanket that’s designed to heat up fast.
  6. Fabric: Fleece, sherpa, velvet, or microfiber all have different feels. Choose one that feels good against your skin because you’ll be spending a lot of quality cuddle time together.
  7. Cord length: A longer cord and a well-placed controller make lounging easier and more comfortable.
  8. Safety certifications: Look for UL or ETL certification so you know your blanket has been tested for electrical safety. Many options come with a warranty for added peace of mind.

Can I put a comforter on top of a heated blanket?

In most cases, you should not put a comforter on top of a heated blanket, as it can lead to overheating and become a fire hazard. For the same reason, you don’t want to sleep with a heated blanket under you, and you should never use a heating pad and a heated blanket at the same time. If you want to put something over your heated blanket, choose a lightweight bedsheet that won’t trap extra heat.
