If you’ve read my candle warmer lamp review, then you already know I’m dedicated to finding the perfect way to keep my home smelling fresh. I’ve gone down all the rabbit holes: simmer pots, traditional candles, vacuums, upholstery deodorizers. You name it, I’ve tried it. So it was only natural that I tested and reviewed the best room sprays to share the results here. This ended up being a very interesting experiment, and I was actually shocked at the results.

But I’m getting ahead of myself—before we dig in, I’ll give you a quick rundown of how I chose and tested each item. First, I did a ton of initial research to find the most searched-for room sprays, while also combing forums like Reddit and, of course, asking for personal recommendations. I whittled it all down to a curated list of products that range from brands you know and love, as well as a few you may not be familiar with. Here’s the final roster:

Room Sprays We Tested

How We Tested

Now that we have the who, it’s time for the how. A bit of context on my home: I live in a railroad-style apartment, so very much not open concept. This gave me a good opportunity to test each spray in small rooms as well as ones that connect to each other (i.e., a variety of layouts and sizes). I followed each product’s specific directions and sprayed about 4 to 7 spritzes each time. I left the room and came back at 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, and an hour to test potency. I repeated this 3 times with each spray in each room (always on different days) to see if the results could be replicated.

Best Overall

Tyler Candle Company Linen and Room Spray

Amazon

$17.60

At-a-Glance:
Price: $18.99
Size: 8 oz
Scent: Diva

Pros:
✓ Super long-lasting scent

Cons:
✗ Not the most aesthetically pleasing packaging
✗ Scent is a bit strong at first

Review:
I’ll be honest here—I was unfamiliar with this company before this test. Drew & Jonathan senior editor Bree Pulver O’Hagan introduced me to it after hearing hype about Tyler’s laundry detergent on TikTok. (Which she’s also testing—stay tuned for that review!) I decided to take a risk and see what it was all about.

The main takeaway: This stuff works. I can smell it not just hours, but days later. I sprayed it in my bedroom, and my dog even picked it up just by laying on the sheets! It was above and beyond the best in long-term results, especially considering its reasonable price. That said, it does smell quite strong at first. But it lightens up over time, and is worth the initial “woah”-factor, in my opinion.

The one drawback is that I chose the scent Diva, which ended up not being my favorite. It’s not off-putting by any means, it’s just not my personal preference. (Which, of course, is all a matter of opinion.) But I will 100% be buying this formula again in a different fragrance, without a doubt.

Best Scent

Homecourt Room Deodorant

Amazon

$45.00

At-a-Glance:
Price: $45
Size: 3.4 oz
Scent: Steeped Rose

Pros:
✓ Smells amazing
✓ Lingers for a solid amount of time
✓ Includes some eco-friendly and/or sustainably sourced ingredients

Cons:
✗ Smaller amount for the price

Review:
Fun fact: The founder of this brand is none other than our former CIOU star Courteney Cox! Let me start by saying this scent is absolutely divine. It truly smells like fresh roses and has absolutely no hint of that artificial finish some sprays can have. I would bathe in Steeped Rose, which obviously means I have every intention of buying the hand soap from her collection, as well.

All that said, my only con here is wishing the product would linger for a bit longer because it’s so fresh. It has a respectable lifespan—I could still smell it after about an hour, but less than a full day. It’s also on the pricier side, which I would say is worth it for the scent and packaging. If you have guests coming over or want your home to smell nice for a special occasion, this is the stuff to keep in your cabinet. As I said earlier, I’m totally hooked and very interested in testing other products from her line.

Best Affordable

Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Room Spray

Amazon

$11.90

At-a-Glance
Price: $12
Size: 8 oz
Scent: Balsam, Geranium

Pros:
✓ Affordable
✓ Lasts a long time
✓ Tons of scents

Cons:
✗ Not quite as natural a scent

Review:
You read the stats above correctly: I have purchased this in two different scents! I love Mrs. Meyer’s products—the hand soap in Geranium smells 10x more expensive than it is—so I wasn’t surprised to find that the room spray is excellent, especially for the price. It lingers about 2 to 3 hours, and even longer on linens. It comes in so many scents, too, so you will have no problem finding one that suits your taste.

The only negative is that it’s not quite as natural smelling as, say, the Homecourt room spray. But if bang for your buck is your primary concern, that’s a fair tradeoff. The packaging isn’t style-forward, so I do keep this under my sink versus out on display. But again, for under $12, you can only ask for so much. I’d recommend this to anyone who wants a fresh-smelling space on a dime. (And seriously, don’t skip the hand soap.)

Best Packaging

Aesop Aromatique Luxury Room Spray

Amazon

$66.00

At-a-Glance:
Price: $66
Size: 3.4 oz
Scent: Olous

Pros:
✓ Beautiful packaging
✓ Luxe smell
✓ Vegan, paraben-free, cruelty-free

Cons:
✗ Not as long-lasting
✗ Pricey for the size

Review:
Man, I had a hard time picking what scent to test here, as Aesop is famous for its beautiful packaging and amazing fragrances. I ultimately narrowed it down to the Reddit-favorite Olous, which is described as, “a blend of citrus botanicals, balanced by breaking waves of Cedar and the refreshing spice of Cardamom.” Honestly, it smells exactly like that!

My favorite thing about this room spray is its appearance. It can be effortlessly blended into the decor on a shelf, coffee table, or cabinet for easy access. And I won’t lie—you feel pretty chic when spritzing this throughout your home. The smell has a lovely, slightly musky finish and immediately fills the space. However, I didn’t notice it past the 30-minute mark. If you’re looking for an instant impact for yourself or guests, this does the trick. But if you’re hoping for a day-long result, this may not be your perfect match.

Best Middle Ground

Mavwicks Linen and Room Spray

Amazon

$9.99

At-a-Glance:
Price: $9.99
Scent: Enchanted Rouge
Size: 8 oz

Pros:
✓ Affordable
✓ Nice packaging

Cons:
✗ Fades a bit quickly

Review:
My mistake with this product came down to choosing the scent. I have the upholstery deodorant in Bel-Aire, and I love, love, love it. (It’s currently sold out, but you can get it in the room spray.) For that reason, I decided to try out a different fragrance and see if history could repeat itself. Unfortunately, it ended up just not being my style. Again, this is a personal preference moment.

In terms of formula, this lasted past the hour mark and I was still picking up hints of it a few hours later. So, for the price, it certainly does the trick for a quick refresh. Plus, it easily has the prettiest packaging of the more affordable options. Next time, I’d grab it in the scent I know I prefer.

Best for Bedding

Muse Apothecary Home Ritual Active Odor Eliminator Spray

Amazon

$8.98

At-a-Glance:
Price: $8.98
Size: 4 oz
Scent: Lavender Fields

Pros:
✓ Inexpensive
✓ Nice packaging
✓ Several scent options
✓ Lingers longest on linens

Cons:
✗ Doesn’t last in the air quite as long as others

Review:
This always populates on my Amazon searches, so it felt appropriate to test it out. In terms of longevity compared to other budget-friendly room sprays, this sits somewhere between Mrs. Meyer’s and Mavwicks. It’s not noticeable in the air after about 30 minutes, but it will remain on your linens for several hours. The packaging is also a middle ground between the two—it’s sleeker than Mrs. Meyer’s, but not quite as streamlined as Mavwicks.

For me the standout here is the scent. Lavendar can be a difficult one to pull off, oftentimes landing on the more artificial side. But Muse’s lavender is light and lovely, and I find myself reaching for this over others to spritz on my sheets after I change them so they can feel extra-luxe when I go to sleep that night.

Honorable Mention

Poo-Pourri Before-You-Go Toilet Spray

Amazon

$13.39

I don’t need to get into too much detail here, but if you don’t have a bottle of this in your bathroom (and a travel size in your bag—thank me later!), then you should get one ASAP. I find that this does the job well when used as directed, and it’s just a nice comfort for yourself and guests. It’s not obvious like your standard bathroom freshener spray, either. You won’t be sorry you picked a few of these up!
