A great playroom isn’t just a place to store kids’ toys—it’s a space where little ones and their imaginations can run wild. That said, a little organization goes a long way in keeping the fun flowing. With the best playroom storage ideas, you can keep their space clean and clutter-free while also encouraging independent play and helping kids develop good habits for tidying up.

Ahead, you’ll find some of our favorite playroom pieces, from cute themed furniture that pulls double duty to smart storage for toys, books, stuffed animals, and more. There are even a few Montessori-inspired pieces, like low bookshelves and open wardrobes, that help kids organize their own things. We’ve also included our top strategies for smart playroom organization, from using labeled bins and baskets to creating separate zones for art, building, or dramatic play. With the right setup, even the busiest little explorers can enjoy a tidy space that’s easy to maintain and fun to play in every single day.

Kids’ Room Hub

Try a Toy Rotation

Amp up the fun and cut down on clutter with a weekly or monthly toy rotation that showcases only a few favorite toys at a time while keeping the rest neatly stored and out of sight.

Use Bins and Baskets

Group everything together in similar categories—like toys, instruments, or art supplies—and sort them into clear bins or baskets. Keeping like items together streamlines both play and cleanup.

Label Everything

Label everything clearly to make cleanup easier. If your kids are very young, you can pair written labels with picture labels to help them recognize where everything goes.

Create Zones

Create different zones around the playroom, like an art station, reading nook, or dramatic play area. Having well-defined play spaces fosters focused, independent play while keeping materials organized.

Make Storage Accessible

Keep bins, shelves, and drawers at kid-friendly heights and invest in Montessori-inspired pieces, such as low bookshelves or open wardrobes. When kids can reach everything, they’re much more likely to put items away themselves.

Incorporate Multi-Functional Furniture

Choose furniture that pulls double duty, like a kid’s table and chairs with built-in drawers or a cute ottoman with hidden storage to keep clutter tucked away.

Use Drawer Dividers

Add dividers to larger drawers or bins to sort small toys and items like crayons, action figures, or doll accessories. This keeps everything visible and prevents any unnecessary clutter.

Use Vertical Space

If you’re tight on square footage, choose storage that makes the most of vertical space, like over-the-door organizers or a wall-mounted bookshelf that tucks neatly behind the door.

Set a Cleanup Routine

A quick 5-minute reset after playtime prevents clutter from building up and encourages responsibility in kids. Consider setting up a chore chart to make it easy—or even fun!—for everyone to pitch in.

No matter the size of your bedroom, it’s a space where every design decision—and every piece of furniture—needs to work hard. That’s why organization here is especially important! But if you’re limited on square footage or your layout calls for a creative solution, it can be hard to find the right furniture to contain the clutter and keep your space organized. But turning to the best beds with storage can help.

Your day begins and ends in the bedroom, and those morning routines and nighttime rituals require a lot of stuff. But storage beds offer a sleek, built-in solution that takes up zero extra space. While under-bed storage bins can be a solution for some, and additional dressers can help contain the mess for others, these storage options aren’t for everyone. Our top picks for modern storage beds below offer a streamlined, stylish solution instead, with camouflaged upholstered drawers or lift-up platforms that make accessing your extras easier than ever.

01

Dawson Storage Bed

The linen-blend frame and headboard covers are both removable (and machine-washable!) so you don’t have to bat an eye at spills or stains. One happy 5-star reviewer writes, “I’ve wanted the Dawson bed for a long time but was honestly scared it wouldn’t look as good in real life. It absolutely does. The proportions are beautiful and the low profile makes the room feel elevated and modern. The upholstery looks clean and tailored, not cheap. It feels solid and high quality. If you’ve been debating it like I was, it’s worth it.”

02

West Elm

$2,999.00

The Vanessa upholstered storage bed from West Elm is a statement piece. The oversized headboard and footboard, along with the soft, textured fabric, help the bed command attention while still looking cozy and comfortable. A storage bed like this can really come in handy for situations like this. Because the three storage drawers are built right into the frame, you don’t have to worry about their favorite action figure getting lost under the bed. Plus, the spindle design is a timeless style that’ll stick with them through any bedroom phase for years to come.

04

05

Emmett Pop-Up Storage Bed

West Elm

$2,199.00

While many storage beds come with drawers at the base, that’s not your only option. With clean lines, a fully upholstered body, and a flexible size run (it comes in everything from a twin and full to a California king), the Emmett bed brings softness and comfort to your bedroom. But the real magic happens below. Instead of drawers, the entire mattress platform lifts via hydraulics to reveal a cavernous storage space beneath. Best used for seasonal items you’ll need to access only occasionally, this clever solution is great for narrow spaces or anyone who wants the look of a traditional bed.

06

The lift-up storage is the real winner—it’s spacious and incredibly easy to open thanks to the hydraulic shocks. Like all Interior Define products, it comes in a stunning selection of upholstery options, including luxe velvets, casual linen, nubby textures, and more. Though you’ll wait a bit longer for this bed due to the custom production options, it’s worth the wait—and the extra storage.

14

Latitude Run Hydraulic Lift Storage Upholstered Platform Bed With Storage Headboard

Wayfair

$400.00

This budget-friendly Wayfair piece takes standard storage and dials it up a notch. Not only does it feature a massive storage spot beneath the bed platform, but the headboard panel also folds down to reveal a shallow-but-useful hidden shelf where you can keep everything from extra tech to your ever-growing pile of books. Choose from three different size options and five fabrics, including a gorgeous olive green and on-trend brown. “The underbed storage is a game changer—spacious, easy to access, and the hydraulic lift works smoothly without much effort,” says one happy buyer. “I love that it has a mesh cover underneath to keep everything clean and protected. The headboard storage is another great feature, perfect for keeping books, a water bottle, or even a few decorative items within reach.”

When Jonathan and Zooey first toured their New York City apartment, it was anything but love at first sight. “I’ve always had the ability to walk into a space and imagine what it could be instantly,” Jonathan says. “But we had our work cut out for us with this place.” Popcorn ceilings; stark white walls; zero personality—that’s not the description you’d expect to hear for Jonathan and Zooey’s dream apartment. But through the weathered walls and crooked layout, they saw a vision of what the space could be. And it was going to have to be a full-scale renovation unlike any other.

“The most important thing for Zooey and me is that a space tells a story, and truly represents its owners,” Jonathan says. “We don’t like boring. We wanted everything from the custom furniture to the wallpaper to the lighting fixtures to feel exquisite.”

Sure, they basically had to start from scratch crafting their perfectly detailed maximalist interior from top to bottom: restructuring the layout; adding in elaborate millwork and custom plaster molding; curating a design scheme that balanced an array of texture, color, pattern, form, and sheen; and an endless laundry list of other to-dos in order to make it into the home of their dreams. But they knew they could turn this blank slate into something truly remarkable. And the challenge was half the fun.

So today, Jonathan is taking us on an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour, walking us through his style secrets and the backstory on all the work that went into renovating their remarkable New York City duplex. You can watch the full video above to get the scoop on everything you want to know, and explore more of the stories behind the design below.

Designing Over a Blank Slate

Transforming the early 1900s turn-of-the-century apartment into the ornate, maximalist family home they wanted it to be was no easy feat. Especially considering the unit itself was more like a dull 1980s office space than a beautiful Victorian or early Craftsman. Jonathan and Zooey wanted to infuse historic character back into the space and recreate the Old World charm that had been lost along the way. With soaring 15-foot ceilings and large-scale windows with natural light typically unheard of in New York City, they knew they wanted to make the home something extraordinary.

While the couple was renovating their Los Angeles home, the Park House, they wanted the 1930s Georgian revival to feel like a true bonding of their style and an homage to the original architect, Gerard Colcord. It was their first home together, and it’s a spectacular display of their taste. “LA was a real learning experience for us. It’s the first place we renovated together as a couple, and we learned a lot,” Jonathan says. But in their NYC apartment, they wanted to go bolder; be more daring in their design. Elaborate pattern mixing. Hand-drawn murals. Ornate embroidered wallpaper. “We wanted to push the boundaries of what we did in our Los Angeles home, and include even more handcrafted elements, vintage pieces, and artisanal touches,” Jonathan says.

Finding the Right Co-Designer

The Manhattan duplex is a testament to Jonathan and Zooey’s unique taste and their commitment to family—a celebration of their relationship and the special parts of it that make it their own. But to pull off a project of this scale while living on the opposite coast, they needed someone local who they could trust to manage critical components when they weren’t there. They found the perfect partner in renowned designer Young Huh. “I spoke with Young and we instantly hit it off,” Jonathan says. “Her attention to detail and her love for elegant, traditional design was exactly what we were looking for.”

Young understood their vision completely. “They wanted to incorporate a sense of history and beautiful decoration and the top request was that there be nothing modern,” she says. “Both of them love color and are fearless in exploring pattern and creativity.”

Together, Jonathan and Zooey collaborated with Young and spent nearly five years crafting their artisanal New York City pied-à-terre. But all that time and hard work was more than well worth it. “Collaborating with them was a complete joy. There was so much good creative energy flowing between us,” Young says.

It’s All In the Details

Lively patterns, romantic lighting, moody colors—every element mattered to Jonathan and Zooey. “Here, we decided that all of the fabrics would tell a story—all of the patterns and prints would really grab you when you walked in,” Jonathan says. “And so you’ll see that here—every decision and every room has something to say.”

“They have an incredibly keen eye for design and style,” Young says. “And no one, absolutely no one has Jonathan’s eagle eye for detail. He can detect if something is off an eighth of an inch with just his eye! That was pretty awe-inspiring.”

That “eagle eye” made all the difference, as each room now has its own sense of emotion and story. “When you walk into the entry you are surrounded by joy,” Young says. “The kitchen, living room, and dining room express conviviality and verve. There is a good deal of romance in the outdoor terraces, and their books, art, and decorative objects have a lot of meaning.”

But the handcrafted detail doesn’t stop at the interior. Their three private terraces each have markedly distinct designs, from the kids’ playful elephant topiary to the beautiful latticework in their French-inspired garden outside the living room. They wanted to hint to Los Angeles here, and make the exterior areas of the apartment feel just as lush as the interior.

Traditional Design, Modern Upgrades

Jonathan and Zooey knew they wanted to go with a more intricate, traditional design when it came to their style choices, but they also wanted to incorporate modern-day upgrades when it came to functional items in the house. Combining the two took some creative thinking, but they were able to work with Young to find pieces that hit everything they wanted, both stylistically and functionally.

Take the kitchen, for example. Jonathan and Zooey knew they wanted upscale and high-quality appliances from retailers like JennAir, but found a way to seamlessly blend them into the design with cabinetry. And the oven resembles an antique artisan fixture—between the patina on the copper detailing on the range and hood to the striking matte black finish—for the perfect combination of function and form.

Jacob Snavely

But it’s not just the kitchen that gets the fun and functional treatment. Their entertaining spaces also blend their family’s favorite activities with thoughtful design. There are automatic projector screens that descend from the living room ceilings for cozy movie nights without a bulky TV set disrupting the aesthetic. A custom karaoke setup is hidden in a beautiful cabinet, but remains easy to pull out at every dinner party or night in with the kids. And the standout piece is a beautiful grand piano that Zooey can record songs on for Jonathan to hear back later.

“I love Zooey’s music, and coming home to hear her playing. Having a player piano where she can record songs that I can listen to while she’s away makes that even easier,” Jonathan says. “Some of my favorite She & Him songs for her to play are ‘I Thought I Saw Your Face Today’, ‘Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?’ and ‘I Could’ve Been Your Girl’.”

There’s also plenty of sleek hidden tech that helps keep their home operating at all levels while they’re away.  “I made sure to incorporate some helpful technologies we love about our LA house into our NYC place, like smart panels and AI-driven leak detection with auto-shut off,” Jonathan says. “Going back and forth between our homes on either coast, we don’t want to be susceptible to any kind of damage while we’re gone, so I can remotely monitor everything from our security to our energy and water use. And the nice thing is it’s all hidden away, so you wouldn’t even notice the tech is there.”

Lighting Takes Effect

Jonathan, Zooey, and Young all champion the effect lighting has on a space (especially with Zooey’s father being a distinguished cinematographer). They took their time combing through antique stores, furniture markets, and lighting designers like Visual Comfort & Co. to find the perfect fixtures for the space—like the stunning Murano glass chandelier in the dining room, the floral ironwork pendant in the foyer, or the beautiful vine clad sconces in the family room.

Jacob Snavely

“Lighting is incredibly important. We knew that we wanted to have some really grand statement fixtures,” he says. “But with the smaller footprint of the apartment, we wanted to ensure that it still felt balanced, and there weren’t too many fixtures clashing with one another. To prevent that, we mixed things up—so you’ll see pendants, chandeliers, and sconces all playing their part to make it a more interesting lighting design.”

Home Sweet Home

Today, Jonathan and Zooey finally have that perfect home base that’s as unique and exciting as the city itself. They put their all into turning the apartment into a place that felt like them: bold, colorful, romantic, and interesting.

“We don’t like a boring, modern space,” Jonathan says. “I love it when somebody says to me, ‘I have never seen something like that before.’ That is music to my ears.”

Achieving the vision they originally set out for was not easy—but through patience, planning, and creativity, they were able to curate a metropolitan haven unlike any other.

Bonus: Maximalist Design Tips from Young

Maximalist design can be so rewarding—but making a variety of colors, patterns, and finishes all marry together to look intentional and curated can feel like a tall order, especially if you don’t know where to begin. “Start by picking your favorite colors, fabrics, and finishes, and put them together on a table,” Young says. “Do they all look good together and do they make you feel excited? Try to imagine how those items will look in the room.”

Creating mood boards and comparing fabric samples, wallpaper squares, and paint chips are all great ways to get the creative juices flowing—but ultimately, curating a maximalist design in your own home comes down to creating a space that feels authentically you. There’s no formula for your unique personality, so go with what makes your space feel like yours. “You just have to love all the things you choose together,” Young says.

Whether summer is in full swing or the holidays are right around the corner, it seems the calendar is always filling up with guests, from friends visiting from far-flung locales to in-laws in for the weekend. Hosting overnight friends and family can be a blast but figuring out where to sleep everyone comfortably is always a bit of a puzzle. Enter your sleepover secret weapon: daybeds with a trundle. Similar to a Murphy bed, daybeds are part couch, part bed, depending on what you need them to be. In small spaces, for example, you might have a daybed styled with throw pillows, so it acts as a couch most of the time. In a kids’ room or guest room, you may have it made up as primarily a bed.

Daybeds with a trundle are extra-efficient, thanks to not one but two sleeping surfaces that can comfortably host adults and children. Below, we’re rounding up our favorite, highly rated options that check the boxes of style, value, and quality to maximize your home’s functionality. Whether your kiddo is bunking up with a pal for the night or your college friends are in town for a reunion, these pieces will help them sleep comfortably—and leave your home looking beautiful in the process.

Looking to make your kids’ room as cute and bright as their personality? Adding in a playful rug could be the perfect solution. The best kids’ room rugs have adorable motifs and pretty colors, of course, but the truly exceptional ones are also easy to clean. (Hey, a messy playtime means it was a great playtime!) So, when shopping for kids’ area rugs, it’s best to look for ones labeled “machine washable.” The last thing a busy parent or caretaker wants to do is spend their day at the laundromat or scrubbing away trying to spot treat a carpet. Something else to consider: Low pile rugs may be less plush than high-pile options, but they tend to be more durable and low maintenance.

We also recommend prioritizing slip-resistant rugs for a nursery, playroom, or child’s bedroom, since they’re more likely to stay in place even as the little ones run about. Mats or carpets with a non-slip backing will be the most secure—but if that’s not an option, consider adding an anti-slip rug pad to your cart. And don’t forget to have fun with it! Go for bright colors, whimsical designs, fuzzy fabrics, or other details that will spark a child’s imaginative side. The best kids’ room rugs will transform their space into a place of curiosity and joy.

01

Kids Sunburst Easy Care Rug

West Elm

$299.00

A best seller at West Elm, this rug makes for a bright and cheerful addition to any room. And thanks to the durable, vacuum-friendly fibers, it’ll definitely stay that way.

02

Paid Partnership With The Home Depot

Crystal Cavern Lifeproof with Petproof Technology

The Home Depot

$4.89/sq. ft.

Plus, you can always layer cute kids’ area rugs on top for an added pop of color and whimsy!

03

Performance Textured Dot Rug

Pottery Barn Kids

$349.00

Any performance fabric Pottery Barn kids’ rug is a safe bet, but we love the sweet polka dot pattern in this one. It’s available in four colors (natural, pink, blue, or navy) so you can match with the rest of their decor. Plus, it’s made from a high/low pile, so it’s plush enough to soften the pitter-patter of little feet, but it’s still sturdy enough to be cleaned with a vacuum or spot treatment.

04

Gambit Washable Rug

Revival

$319.00

Revival’s Gambit rug is both plush and washable—and comes in a checkerboard print that is so cool, you’ll be a little jealous that you didn’t get one for your own bedroom! “This rug looks amazing in our playroom,” raves one reviewer. “I am so obsessed with it, and it is so soft. We have gotten so many compliments on it already.”

05

Marlowe Colorful Stripes Washable Rug

Rugs USA

$70.00

Consider low pile, washable rugs when shopping for your kid’s room (or any high-traffic area in the house, for that matter). Not only is stain removal easier, but many—including this colorful striped rug from Rugs USA—can fit into a standard washing machine.

06

Outer Space Black Rug

Ruggable

$369.00

Now this is a rug that’s out of this world—literally! If your little one is obsessed with outer space, they’ll love this fun cosmic rug that’s filled with stars, constellations, and vivid plants. (Meanwhile, you’ll be blown away by how stain and water-resistant it is.)

07

Lahome Abstract Botanical Printed Rug

Amazon

$59.99

Over 1,000 Amazon customers have left glowing reviews of this affordable botanical print rug, which is available in nine different colors and even more sizes. “We bought this rug to replace a previous one we had in our daughter’s bedroom, and it was a great purchase,” writes one reviewer. “The rug is very, very soft…It comes with directions for washing, so upkeep is very easy. The colors are vibrant and consistent.”

08

Zoomie Kids Astra Machine Washable Animals Rug

Wayfair

$64.99

The whimsical design isn’t the only eye-catching thing about this rug! The yarn is finished with a dazzling shimmer that shifts under the light and will create a truly magic experience for your kiddo.

09

YOUPINS Moroccan Area Rug

Walmart

$35.61

In addition to being machine washable, this large area rug has a non-slip backing that’ll help keep it more securely in place. As any parent can attest, something that’s slip resistant is a crucial safety feature to have around active kids.

10

Ivana Checkered Plush Cloud Washable Rug

Rugs USA

$140.00

Don’t be surprised if your child wants to take every nap on this cozy rug, which is so fluffy that Rugs USA claims it’s like “walking on a cloud.” They’ll also appreciate having the soft space to lie on while reading books or listening to music.

11

Lorena Canals Kaarol Washable Cotton Rug

Nordstrom

$519.00

Founder and designer Lorena Canals was inspired to make her first washable rug after watching her own daughters playing at home. Over 20 years later, her kid-friendly brand has now become known for its high-quality (and machine washable) kids’ room rugs, playful designs, and sustainable practices.

12

Machine Washable Alyssa Rug

Pottery Barn Kids

$169.00

For a touch of unexpected elegance in your kids playroom rug, look for a classic Persian-inspired rug in bright, childlike colors. The vintage, worn-in finish will also hide any rough-and-tumble play from a little one well.

13

Bronto Hand-tufted Rug

Revival

$299.00

Children’s book author, illustrator, and mom Amanda Jane Jones designed this adorable dino mat. It’d be the cutest addition to a dinosaur-themed bedroom or playroom. (Note: Because it’s a high-pile rug—which is what makes it so soft and comfy—shedding is to be expected at first, but should even out over time.)

14

Kids Machine Washable Rainbow Track Rug

West Elm

$299.00

The retro rainbow on this West Elm kids’ rug has such a nostalgic feel, you’ll be warmly reminded of your own playroom growing up. Don’t let the white background deter you, either—it’s vacuum-friendly and machine washable, so cleaning is a breeze.

15

Justina Blakeney Josephine Midnight Tufted Rug

Ruggable

$569.00

This Ruggable collaboration with Jungalow founder and interior designer Justina Blakeney actually makes for a wonderful kids’ rug, too. Not only is it stain and water-resistant, but the fantastical design is sure to ignite your child’s imagination.

16

Amdrebio Fluffy Round Area Rug

Amazon

$31.49

Create a cozy zone in a playroom or bedroom with this fuzzy circular rug that’s available in 21 different colors and several sizes. “It instantly made my space feel cozier and more playful,” one Amazon customer says in their review. “The texture is incredibly soft and fluffy, perfect for bare feet or for kids to sit and play on. It also lays flat nicely and doesn’t shed, which was a pleasant surprise.”

We have a special surprise we’ve been waiting to announce: We’re bringing community, problem-solving skills, and teamwork to your family with a new children’s show, Builder Brothers Dream Factory. Drew and Jonathan’s animated series is exactly the kind of content they’ve been wanting for their little ones, so they decided to make their own.

“This series is one of our most personal projects to-date,” Drew says. “Now that we have our own kids, we are more attuned to sharing the values our own parents instilled in us, but in a fresh and familiar way that resonates with families everywhere.”

Builder Brothers Dream Factory is inspired by the twin Bros we know and love, Drew and Jonathan Scott. In the show, Drew and Jonathan are just two regular kids with limitless imagination. Along with their friends Mel and Ayana, the crew works together to navigate the everyday highs and lows in the neighborhood with a creative and collaborative spirit, so they can make the world a better place.

“We were raised to believe that we can dream up any big idea, and there’s always a creative way to come together and solve any problem,” Jonathan says. “We hope this series will inspire optimism and teamwork in every home and school across the country.”

Here’s all the info you need to know about the Builder Brothers Dream Factory kids show!

Where can I watch Builder Brothers Dream Factory?

Full episodes can be found on The Roku Channel. Tons of family fun is just a click away!

What is Builder Brothers Dream Factory about?

This animated series is a fun new kids show that’s all about problem-solving, teamwork, and dreaming big! The show is geared toward upper preschoolers (ages 4–7), but we know parents will enjoy it, too.

Are the real-life Drew and Jonathan featured on the show?

Yes, the grown-up Drew and Jonathan actually play character voices on the show! Drew voices the twins’ dad, and Jonathan voices Uncle Ian (their dad’s twin brother). And we even get a cameo from Drew and Jonathan’s brother, JD Scott! He plays the voice of Santa in one of the holiday episodes of Builder Brothers Dream Factory.

Is there more?

We can’t blame you for asking! If you want more Builder Brothers fun, you can also check out Drew and Jonathan’s children’s books, Builder Brothers: Big Plans and Builder Brothers: Better Together. They’ll not only make for a great story time with the kids, but they also come with a do-it-yourself project you can work on together. What’s better than that?

When you’re decorating your kids’ bedroom, design ideas and color schemes are boundless. From their first nursery theme to their big kid bedroom, your little one’s space should feel cozy and cute, with plenty of adorable details, from sweet night-lights and bookshelves, even down to their storage solutions. That’s what makes decorating kids’ rooms so fun—but also so limitless! If you’re feeling stuck, having some inspiration to look to could help you narrow down exactly what you want their bedroom to look and feel like.

Drew and Jonathan love designing kids’ bedrooms and playrooms because there is so much room to play around with fun patterns and themes that you don’t get to in the rest of the house. So, to help you find exactly what you’re looking for, we looked toward our favorite kids’ bedroom ideas from our shows and pulled images from episodes with children’s designs that embraced imagination and whimsy. There are neutral jungle designs, cutesy travel-inspired rooms, glam rooms infused with pretty floral wallpaper, and so much more.

Kids’ Room Hub

Polka dots, rainbows, and gumdrop-colored daydreams are the main event in this room! We love how the rug matches the canopy above the bed. Plus, the sweet rainbow wall decal is a cute touch to bring all the colors together.

Kids’ Room Hub

For those who are channeling “all grown-up” vibes, a posh palace awaits! Light-colored furniture with darling pink and gold accents make for a pretty paradise retreat. And don’t you just love that tassel chandelier?

Kids’ Room Hub

Encourage adventure and wanderlust in their room with decor that’s centered around travel. Drew and Jonathan went with a city-style wallpaper here, but you could do hot air balloons, airplanes, or boats for the same effect. Add in a fun print, like stripes, for some variety. Here, your little ones will be dreaming of their future journeys to come.

Kids’ Room Hub

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Changing up your walls can totally transform your space. Especially in the bedroom, wall paint has a big impact on the overall style. In the kids’ bedroom here, Drew and Jonathan went with a color-blocked style, half-drenching the bottom of the walls in pink and the other top half in white.

Kids’ Room Hub

If your little one is always playing with trucks and tractors, it’s a great excuse to take their favorite toys and make a whole theme out of them! A fun car-shaped bed and sprinkled motifs of buses and trucks throughout make for a seriously cool kids’ bedroom that’s both creative and cute.

Playing around with form and print can add a ton of visual interest to a kids’ bedroom, especially as they start to grow. We love the dinosaur sheets here that the Bros used, but you could even take the motif to other forms throughout the room, like a dinosaur-shaped bookshelf or a fabric storage dresser featuring all their favorites. Smart storage is a huge win, too, with a loft bed that features ample shelving and drawers while saving space.

Is there anything cuter than a jungle theme?! Go wild with wallpaper here, where a mural will be the star of the show. Then, bring in characters like jungle animals and soft fabrics throughout to make the space feel whimsical and fun. This could be the perfect theme idea for a playroom, too.

Decorating your baby’s nursery is one of the most exciting parts of preparing for their arrival—and there are so many fun ways to make it special! From children’s themed bedroom furniture to kids room wallpaper ideas that will totally transform their space, the possibilities are endless. Sweet nursery theme ideas make curating their nursery feel that much more magical, for both you and your little one soon-to-come!

A little princess nursery with bow-topped curtains and a flowing canopy adds a sweet, classic touch, while a space-themed room with glow-in-the-dark stars and rocket-inspired shelves that double as decor sparks curiosity from day one. For animal lovers, a nature-inspired nursery like Drew and Linda made for Parker lets you incorporate everything from playful elephants to photos of the family pup. And if you’re looking for a whimsical twist, a cloud-themed nursery with soft blues and fluffy details is sure to bring sweet dreams. No matter which nursery theme captures your heart, there are plenty of creative ways to personalize your little one’s space and give them a warm, magical welcome on their first day home.

1. Space-Themed Nursery

Blast off into a world of wonder with a space-themed nursery that inspires curiosity and imagination! Whether your little astronaut is dreaming of planets, stars, or rocket ships, there’s no shortage of stellar decorations to explore.

Set the scene with deep navy walls or starry wallpaper that looks like the night sky. Glow-in-the-dark stars and moon decals add a dreamy touch that’ll light up their nights. Tie it all together with celestial-inspired details, like star-patterned crib sheets and plush moon pillows. For a fun, educational twist, try a planet mobile over the crib or a few framed NASA prints on the walls. And for a cozy finishing touch, add a reading nook where your little explorer can daydream of adventures in galaxies far, far away!

2. Sweet Princess-Themed Nursery

Bring a dash of fairy tale magic to your tiny royal’s space with a princess-themed nursery! Think beyond just pink: Soft lavenders, shimmering golds, and blush tones can create a regal, dreamy space that grows with your little one.

Start by picking a standout piece, like a tufted crib or a canopy with sheer, flowing fabric to give the room a cozy, castle-like feel. Add charming accents like bow-topped curtains, velvet pillows, and princess-themed nursery wall decor or even a mural. A mini chandelier adds that final touch of sparkle to make the room feel straight out of a storybook. For personalized flair, consider monogrammed bedding or custom wall art featuring your little princess’s name.

3. Animal-Themed Nursery Ideas

animal themed nursery ideas

Animal schemes are one of the best nursery theme ideas out there, thanks to the flexibility (and fun!) they offer. You can cater your room’s design to really any friend that suits your fancy, from elephants or eagles to a playful tribute to the family pup.

Start by narrowing in on your chosen animal, as well as a color scheme that matches your vision, like an ombre of blues or a selection of sorbet shades. From there, look for playful accents like oversized stuffies, wall hooks, or patterned bunting to hammer home your vision. Artwork is also a great way to lean into an animal-themed nursery—sites like Etsy have a bevy of options you can personalize with the name of your littlest love for a welcome home like none other.

4. Woodland-Themed Nursery Ideas

Corner chair with teddy bear in nursery

If your family loves exploring and adventures, a woodland-themed nursery may be the perfect way to pay tribute to that. Nature-inspired nursery decor is soaring in popularity (in fact, this photo may look familiar because it’s pulled straight from Drew and Linda’s nursery for Parker!).

To bottle the feel of the forest, look first to the walls—a large-scale mural, shimmery nature-inspired wallpaper, or leaf decals can go a long way in making the entire room feel like it’s surrounded by greenery. Woodland accents are also a must, so look for charming additions like a birch branch shelf or baby animal art. When it comes to a color palette that really ties the whole look together, incorporate muddy neutrals (like deep sage, burnt orange, or taupe) to add sophisticated color that can grow with your kiddos long after infancy. Oh, and cordless window treatments are a must, too—they’re great for safety and controlling light! You can find plenty of options for those here.

5. Bunny-Themed Nursery Ideas

bunny themed nursery ideas

Let’s be honest—there’s almost nothing cuter than a baby bunny (except for your impending human one, of course!). This fluffy friend is a favorite for nurseries and playrooms alike, and there are nearly endless ways to incorporate bunnies into your child’s room decor.

Take inspiration from a bunny’s softness and aim to make every corner of the nursery a plush and happy escape—think fluffy blankets, cozy chairs, and plush rugs. Incorporating a bunny’s likeness is a must, too (again, the cuteness!), so shop for furniture, bed linens, and other accessories that boast two telltale ears. Stumped for a color palette? Work in dusty pastels for a scene that would make Peter Cottontail feel right at home.

6. Cloud-Themed Nursery Ideas

cloud themed nursery ideas

To create a sunny, happy nursery for your baby… look up! A whimsical cloud motif brings the magic of the sky to your baby’s bedroom, where the forecast calls for only sun (and maybe a few rainbows).

Start by coating the walls in a light blue, then turn to white in every form to evoke the feeling of living within a fluffy cloud. A plush sheepskin rug underfoot will feel like walking on air (and make for a great place to practice crawling) while cloud-shaped pillows bring the fanciful theme to life. Finishing touches like a cloud light or a charming mobile will keep your little one’s eyes trained on the sky.

When we’re designing our homes, of course we think about what decor styles we gravitate toward—the traditional aesthetic, mid-century modern, mixing eclectic styles, or whatever it may be. We also think about our home’s unique layout, functional needs, and organization and cleaning hacks to keep our spaces less cluttered. But there’s another thing that’s incredibly important to our home’s ambiance: the ways we create family-friendly spaces. Whether you’ve got little toddlers, growing teens, college kids, or plenty of fur babies, coming up with creative ideas to make your house feel like a home can be hard work. But don’t worry—we’ve got plenty of inspiration.

Something as simple as buying the right fabric to cat-proof your couch or choosing the best rug to stand up to kids’ messes can make a huge difference in your daily life. When good style meets smart design, your family home will feel more serene and warm to everyone in the household. And because “grown-up” rooms don’t have to be so stuffy, kids’ spaces don’t have to be so kiddish, and everyone could stand to be a little bit tidier, we’ve put together the best tips for designing a home that works for the whole crew.

1. Give Art Projects a Place to Shine

Why pay for generic prints that could be on anyone’s walls when you have one-of-a-kind art coming home in the schoolbag? Get some frames (secondhand, mismatched ones are more than welcome) and start arranging. “I framed artwork from each of my seven kids and displayed them together,” says Jenny Reimold, owner at Whim & Willow Designs in Nashville, Tennessee. “It’s an inexpensive and personal way to add color to the walls.” Not to mention, it makes your little Frida Kahlo feel proud and valued.

2. Create a Family Rec Room

Convert unused basement or garage space into a family gym that works for different ages, as Reimold did. “We have weights and cardio machines for us and our teens, and gymnastics mats and a mini trampoline for the younger children,” she says. “This lets us all spend time together reaching our fitness goals, and the kids learn the importance of mental and physical health.”

3. Cut Back On Seating

To create a living room that’s more workhorse than show horse, you need open areas to play, build, wrestle, and spread out. Less furniture will allow for this, so try taking out extra seating you don’t use on the regular. “You might be surprised by what you don’t miss,” says Alison Mazurek, a Vancouver, British Columbia–based mom of two and founder of the small-space hub 600sqft.com. “We haven’t had a coffee table in seven years. We use side tables, which are smaller and simple to move around the room or get out of the way, and it makes our small living room feel larger.”

4. Design Around a Shared Interest

To make a room welcoming to all members of the family, think about what interests you share with your kids. If it’s watching movies, make your den a cozy hangout for movie night; if it’s dancing, maybe a record player is the centerpiece of the room. Then address individual interests on the periphery, so everyone has their own mini zone: a toy station here for the youngest ones, a drawing station there for the older ones, a reading chair for the adults. This way, folks can hang together and share space during group activities and “me” time.

5. Teach Kids the Easy Trick to Cleaning Up

“Keeping ‘like with like’ is a simple organizational system that makes intuitive sense to both kids and adults,” says Mazurek. Start early, reinforce often: All cars go in one bin, blocks go in another, art stuff goes in yet in another, and so on. It makes even the messiest room more manageable!

girl holding potted plant illustration

6. Value Function Over Fashion

“Great design is about problem solving, so families should focus on how something works for them first,” says Ashley Ross, Founder of Muse Noire Interiors in Charlotte, North Carolina. All-white everything or a collection of gorgeous-but-poisonous plants in fragile pots may look great on Instagram, but it’s not practical if you have a toddler. “Especially in the family room, where you spend the most time, throw out the traditional rules of design and start by considering the needs of your loved ones,” she says. “Think of what says comfort and community for each person, and design around that so you have an element in the room that makes everyone feel like the space is for them.”

7. Age Up the Kids’ Spaces

Your kiddos’ bedroom or playroom doesn’t have to look juvenile. “Keep the foundational color palette the same as the rest of the home—like cream or neutral-color walls—to make their spaces feel cohesive. Then accent with brighter colors so it feels like a fun, welcoming place for young ones,” Reimold says. “Add a colorful rug or throw pillows, easy and affordable to swap out as children age.” Ross recommends convertible furniture that can grow into the next stage: a crib that adjusts to a toddler bed, or a twin bed you can eventually loft to put a desk underneath. “For kids’ rooms, you always want to design for a few years ahead,” she says.

8. Share the Kitchen

No matter how much you order take-out, you or your partner (or both!) are probably in the kitchen most evenings cooking, setting the table, and cleaning dishes. Rather than spending those after-work hours away from your littles, bring them to where you’ll be. A kitchen island, table, or desk tucked in the corner is great for homework time or craft projects. “I turned a breakfast nook off the kitchen into a ‘lounge’ so I can watch my toddlers playing and offer homework help to the older kids while I’m cooking,” says Reimold. “It’s great to set up storage there, too, so the kids can easily pull out—and quickly put away—their MVP toys and games.”

9. Give Everyone’s “Outside Stuff” a Spot

Sure, a mudroom is ideal, but even a teeny apartment entrance or garage can be arranged so that each family member has space for their stuff. It should be labeled and specific and include a shoe rack, a bag spot, and a coat/backpack hook. “This way, everyone can quickly access what they need each morning and put it in its designated spot at the end of the day,” says Ashley Murphy, cofounder of NEAT Method, a home-organizing company with locations across the country.

10. Buy Low-Maintenance Furniture

Linen couches and high-end rugs that have to be professionally cleaned may look great when you bring them home, but not so much a few months later. For Reimold, who has seven kids at home, strong materials are a must. “I do washable cotton, polypropylene, or jute rugs because they hold up to high traffic and spills,” she says. “Slipcovers are great, or couches with Revolution fabric that can be cleaned with dish soap. Dining room or coffee tables made of reclaimed or distressed wood look modern, but they also allow for nicks, dents, and rogue crayon marks. You want spaces that people can live in, not just look at!”

11. Let Your Teen Decorate

“This is a great way to connect with a middle or high schooler, but you have to tread lightly. Teens need to feel like you trust them enough to make their own decisions,” says Ross. She recommends setting a budget and asking them to create two Pinterest boards to share with you: one for the things they love and another for the things they absolutely do not want to see in their space. Then make a list together so you can prioritize elements. Resist the urge to exert control or make their room coordinate with the rest of the house; it’s their space and it doesn’t have to be your taste—or timeless, for that matter.

person in bed illustration

12. Swap Bedrooms

“Maybe that means the kids share the larger main bedroom and you take the smaller bedroom, freeing up a room for an office or play area,” says Mazurek, the small-space guru. Giving up your room may seem extreme, but it’s not about ceding a power grab to the kids; it’s about optimizing square footage.

13. Turn Collections Into Decor

A sand dollar, a superhero figurine, a prize from a cereal box—all those weird things your kid collects can collect on surfaces around the house… Or instead, you can turn them into decor. “Printing trays with compartments, the ones that would hold the letters for a printing press, are the best for displaying kids’ treasures,” say Anna and Juan Donado, parents, artists, and owners of Goose Grease Art Space in Brooklyn, New York. “We hang them on the walls for the kids to display their favorite small things, like shells and gumball-machine toys.” Available for cheap on auction sites and at antique shops, the trays can make a random assemblage of things look intentional and artsy.

14. Be a Storage Star

Let’s face it: No child is a minimalist. Rather than dump things they want (or need), organize them with hidden storage instead! Use each nook and cranny to stow stuff out of sight—under-bed bins to host out-of-season clothes and shoes; a woven basket under the coffee table for errant toys; a drawer in the media console for crafts. And when you buy new furniture, focus on pieces with hidden storage. Beds, ottomans, modular wall units, nightstands, and end tables can all help conceal stuff. PS: You know those little indoor kids’ play tents? They double as toy bins when not in use. Fill them with stuffies and no one but little ones who crawl on the floor will be the wiser.

15. Hang Up a Hobby

Whether it’s a surfboard, a tennis racket, or a trombone, your child’s hobby can double as wall art. “As our kids add more instruments to their collection, we try to find ways of turning them into part of the living room decor,” say the Donados. “We hang guitars on the wall, use the conga drum as a side table, and display harmonicas on shelves.” It shows that you take pride in what they’re into, plus it’s easier to access the items than when they’re stuffed in a closet somewhere.

16. Make the Nursery a “Calm Zone” (for Everyone)

“Until they’re 5, kids are unlikely to give input on the design of their room, or even really notice it, so make it a space where you enjoy spending time,” says Ross. Choose soothing colors that make you and the room’s inhabitants feel joy. Use the space for quiet reading and play. And if bigger kids want in, they’re welcome! As long as they adhere to the “calm zone” rules.

17. Organize Quarterly

Feeling the urge to purge? To counteract possession-creep without making yourself (or your family) crazy, gather everyone to declutter several times a year. “As each season ends, take stock. Get rid of items you didn’t use; box up seasonal clothes and shoes your kids will outgrow by the next year; and toss toys and games with broken or missing pieces,” says Murphy. If quarterly seems tough to pull off, she recommends doing it annually, before the holidays. “Encourage them to donate gently used items they no longer wear or play with to create space for incoming gifts,” she says.

18. Mix Up Your Room Use

“Long gone are the days of off-limit rooms. Kids should be free to roam,” says Ross. To shift traditionally formal spots into comfortable spaces for the whole fam, ditch solo-purpose rooms (den for watching TV, playroom for toys and games, dining room for meals) and instead think of every space as a multipurpose one. Sure, a dining room is where you eat with company, but it can also be the family game room, homework zone, and the perfect “reading with grandma” spot.

19. Set Boundaries On What Goes Where

If you’ve ever found yourself picking neon Play-Doh out of white shag carpet while muttering, “This is why we can’t have nice things,” we feel you. But try focusing less on what your kids play with and more on where they play with it. “Set boundaries in advance so parents and kids are on the same page,” says Ross. Rules like “We only eat on the first floor” or “No slime in the living room” or “Building block sets are only built on the table” don’t make you mean. They teach boundaries—good preparation for school, and for life… And you’re much less likely to step on a toy block.

20. Now…Chill

See all the beautiful families posing in their lovely homes in the magazines? The photos are prepped and planned and sometimes even propped a little. Point being, nobody’s house looks like a haven of familial harmony and order all the time. Create systems. Set limits. Then remember that life is messy and the best way to make everybody feel happy at home is to be in one place, having fun and making those messes, together.
