Keeping your car clean can feel like a never-ending task. Between the crumbs in between the seats, the dirt caked into the floor mats, and the occasional coffee spill, it doesn’t take long for all the messes to start building up. You probably don’t want to drag your full-size vacuum cleaner out to the driveway. And while a trip to the car wash can leave your car looking spotless at first, you may not necessarily want to make a trip there every time things start to get a little dusty. That’s where the best car vacuums come in.

Designed to be portable, compact, and lightweight, these handheld tools are as easy to use as they are to store in your trunk. And what they may lack in size, they make up for in suction power. Unlike your average handheld vacuum, these cordless vacuum cleaners for cars often offer stronger suction and specialized attachments to help deep-clean tight spaces, seats, floor mats, and carpet. They’re also typically cordless and battery-powered, making it easy to clean your car anywhere without having to hunt for an outlet. Whether you’re doing a quick refresh or deep cleaning after a road trip, these picks deliver serious cleaning power—no full-size vacuum (or extension cord!) required.

Your home isn’t just a place to sleep—it can also be where you work; host parties with friends and family; have game nights with the kids; share recipes and meals together; and more. It should reflect your interests and lifestyle! And if you prioritize your health and physical fitness, that might mean carving out a space for a home gym. In Drew Scott’s home gym tour above, you’ll see why it’s a vital part of his daily routine, plus get the scoop on his must-haves, as well as some tips for creating your own fitness space.

“I’m getting up there in years, so it’s not just about lifting heavy and trying to put on muscle—for me, it’s more about having longevity of enjoyable life, which means being able to move,” Drew says. “I would like to be able to touch my toes when I’m 80 years old… Can I even do that right now?”

With his busy lifestyle, Drew says that it’s important for him to work out so he can do everything he wants. He’s in a new movie that just came out with Ke Huy Quan called Love Hurts, and there’s a couple of action scenes where he needed to perform. Having his home gym in the garage made training far easier and more convenient than it would have been if he had to go to a traditional gym, especially with his jam-packed schedule. Plus, with Parker and Piper running around the house, he wants to be able to keep up with the little ones! Ready to find out more about Drew’s setup? His essentials and more advice are below.

Garage Hub

Comfortable Matting

Step one before you bring any equipment home? Make sure you have the right flooring to support your body (and your machinery!) especially if you plan on putting your home gym in your garage. Drew uses a sport court-like material for his home gym, which offers cushion but is also super strong. He can still drive a vehicle on top of it if he wanted to, so it definitely supports the weight of all his equipment. On top of this base flooring, he also included cushioned mats for extra support. It’s an inexpensive way to keep comfortable, especially when you’re doing floor exercises like planks, bodyweight exercises, or stretching.

Reliable Machinery

Drew has all of the equipment he needs right in his garage, like a reformer machine, yoga mats, adjustable dumbbells, adjustable kettlebells, and a stationary bike. That way, he’s able to customize his workout routine daily without having to travel to different clubs. And especially with two little ones, having that flexibility is everything. Drew’s able to get a workout in early in the morning, and then go straight into the day ahead. Linda was adamant about including a Pilates reformer in their home gym setup, and Drew says she couldn’t have been more right.

“This is the best thing in the world!” he says. “It was originally Linda’s idea to get a Pilates reformer—I was like ‘I don’t need that, give me the squat rack and a dumbbell,’ but once I started working out here I started to realize how much this helps every aspect of my workout, and it helps me just in life, too, like carrying Parker.”

A Good Playlist

Drew’s personal favorite is Celtic instrumental, Celine Dion, and relaxing movie scores. But whatever genre gets you pumped to break a sweat is perfect—you do you! A good, motivating playlist will help give you the energy to go the extra mile in your workout, and make it enjoyable, too. Whether that means tuning into your favorite podcast, creating a custom playlist of your favorite songs, or queueing up some Celtic instrumental like Drew, listening to something that keeps your brain engaged and occupied is a must. While Drew has speakers integrated into his ceiling, you can get the same effect with a few smart speakers or even a portable option.

A Strong Mindset

But no matter how great your home gym setup is, the real key is to simply get moving.

“In life, you will always find a reason to not be able to do something—you’re too busy because of X, Y, Z—so my mentality is, ‘Stop making excuses and just get out here and do it,'” Drew says.

You can do it! And for more home tours like this, plus how tos, and more, subscribe to our YouTube channel.

A newly built structure in this Portland, Oregon, backyard offers its owners extra living and play space and welcomes guests from near and far.

The Franson-Timby family pose outside their garage-turned–freestanding guesthouse.

Leighann Franson and Mark Timby’s guesthouse is just as inviting to strangers visiting from China as it is to friends and family. It’s also the first place their eight-year-old son heads to check the glide of his paper airplane after launching it from the bedroom loft.

white modern stairway with yellow chair sitting area
Open space under the stairs serves as a cozy reading nook, and prints by Portland artists add local charm for out-of-town guests.

The versatility of the 515-square-foot structure is just what the couple had in mind when they set out to create an accessory dwelling unit (ADU), the official term that cities use to define separate living quarters from stand-alone homes. Leighann and Mark, who live in Portland, Oregon, wanted the place, where a dilapidated garage had stood, to get lots of use. Their goal was to create a space they’d enjoy themselves and use Airbnb rentals to help cover the costs of building (a construction loan of $130,000, plus $30,000 in fees and permits) and the additional property taxes, insurance, and utilities. They also wanted to give back: Guests can donate 2 percent of the rental fees to the local charity of their choice.

“We’ve hosted people from Switzerland, Canada, Korea, Panama, and China. Mark and I used to travel a lot. What we love about the guest house is that it brings the world to us.”

— Leighann Franson

The ADU is just steps from the cozy 1,100-square-foot 1926 bungalow that Leighann and Mark have shared for almost 15 years. When they decided they wanted more space to spread out in, they resisted a straight expansion. “These old homes have such character,” Leighann says. “Our house is just fine. We don’t need a bigger house.”

Mark had been following the work of local expert Kol Peterson, who had blogged about building his own ADU and has since written a book about the process. Once the couple saw they could create a structure where the old garage had once stood, they embraced the challenge. “We enjoyed working within a small space to make it the best it can be,” Leighann says.

They were required by local ordinances to reference the architecture of the original home when building their ADU. “The proportion of the windows had to match the proportion of the windows in the main house, and the exterior siding had to match,” Leighann says. “But the result is a beautiful consequence of our vision plus the constraints the city put on us.” To counterbalance the gray Pacific Northwest winters, they included plenty of windows—21 to be exact—plus three glass doors and skylights in the dormer.

The couple shared photos of inspiring structures with architect Alan Armstrong and builder Joe Robertson to offer some direction. The open steel-and-cable railing, butcher-block countertops, and polished concrete floors were all part of Leighann and Mark’s plan. They even met their goal of shopping locally: Kitchen and bathroom shelves came from salvaged wood, while two-by-fours from a friend’s remodeling project were repurposed into sills for the windows. What was once the garage’s roofing is now an outdoor shower.

After years of studying, planning, and saving, Leighann and Mark finally got their ADU, which has brought them more elbow room, closer relationships with their neighbors, acquaintance with international guests—and a spot to shower on warm evenings under lilac blossoms. “We are so grateful we were able to bring this vision to life,” Mark says.

Jenny and Jon Kelecius turned their dilapidated garage into a roomy, colorful space perfect for family hangs.
family hanging out in spacious garage game room
Jenny’s favorite color makes a vivid splash on pendant lights and mod-style armchairs. “I love yellow,” she says. “I have a gold velvet couch, so I was all down with the yellow.”

After the dinner plates have been cleared in their Oak Park, Illinois, home, Cameron and Logan Kelecius wiggle with excitement. It’s time to bolt across the backyard and up the stairs to the space above the family’s newly built garage. “Mostly, it’s the ice cream parlor,” their dad, Jon, says. The coach house, as they refer to it, was finished last May. “We have dinner and then go up there and make sundaes and play shuffleboard—all with Peppa Pig on in the background.”

Bright, airy, and bouncing with bold color, the space is a natural draw for two young boys. But it also plays host to neighborhood friends who gather for Friday happy hour, the parents playing games and having drinks around the island while the kids run around inside and out to the yard. Jon’s mom has stayed overnight with girlfriends after attending a concert nearby. And the space can be a private retreat, too, with Jon sometimes heading there to chill out and strum his guitar.

A coat of Luminous Days by Benjamin Moore revs up the entry and interior doors.

“A second living space is a great place to step outside your design comfort zone and even let the kids make some choices so that they can really have a spot to call their own.”

—Drew

The shuffleboard table has plenty of elbow room around it. Even though the coach house sometimes hosts overnight guests, the couple opted not to take up valuable floor space with permanent beds. “Two rollaway beds happen to fit perfectly in the closet,” designer Jess Milburn says.

“We have dinner and then go up there and make ice cream sundaes and play shuffleboard—all with Peppa Pig on in the background.”

—Homeowner Jon Kelecius

Jon and Jenny weren’t sure what the space could become when, in 2017, they stared down the process of rebuilding a falling-down garage. They knew they should at least include room for extra storage. But when they saw the high ceilings and large windows architect Debra McQueen created, they saw big-time potential.

Busy running their construction business and raising the boys, the couple needed interior design help to realize it. So Jenny called in a longtime friend, Robin Flaherty, and her partner, Jess Milburn, and turned them loose on the raw space. The only thing Jenny requested? Colorful kitchen cabinets. “People expect their kitchen to stay in style forever with classic gray and white,” but Jenny says she wanted to take a risk. “What’s the worst that can happen? You can repaint them someday, no big deal.”

Jess’s design style was right in line with that sentiment. “Nothing makes us happier than bright color combinations,” she says, “so we were on the same page from the get-go.” The designers amplified the light innate to the open second-story space using pale-oak engineered floors, white paint on the ceiling, and a wall of glossy subway tile for a bright, airy look. Graphic black in the window trim and ceiling beams, wallpaper, and rug patterns added contrast.

Jenny was so happy with the results, she gets a little teary talking about it. “It’s so beautiful,” she says. “They listened to what I wanted and made it better. It’s such a fun spot and a great party space.”

jenny looking through cookbook in high ceiling kitchen
Jenny’s cabinet theory: Why be boring? Go bold; you can always change it later if your tastes change. To get the specific shade they wanted (Dark Teal by Benjamin Moore), the design team had the cabinets custom-made and painted. They kept walls and countertops crisp white for more eye-catching contrast.
