We all love our pets! From their snuggles to their silly personalities, they truly make our lives better. That’s why we spoil them with cozy pet beds, all the fun toys and cat trees, and of course, plenty of treats. We take care of them and they take care of us in return. But as anyone who has a furry family member knows: Our four-legged friends can also shed—a lot. And it can get annoying to watch it take over our couches, clothes, bedding, and more. If this sounds like you, then you likely need some good pet hair removers to help control the shedding. And luckily, there are incredible products out there now that can handle the job.

Whether you’ve got one tiny kitten or a whole family of golden retrievers, pet hair removers are an essential to keep your home (and your things) feeling clean and smelling good. And there’s no one-size-fits-all, either. Of course there are essentials that every pet household needs, like lint rollers and a nice vacuum that’s built for pet messes. But depending on your home, your pet, and your needs, you could probably benefit from a few other pet removers, too: an air purifier meant to contain pet odors and keep air clean; a pet hair roller remover meant for upholstered sofas and hard-to-clean materials; or even a dense comb tool that can lift fur out of high-pile carpets and thick fibers.

We’ve compiled a list of some of the highest-rated pet hair removers in all these categories and more. Below, you’ll find editor-favorite vacuums, super-sticky lint rollers, air purifiers that specifically target pet dander, and more. We also included options for traveling or on-the-go use in your car, because somehow hair always ends up there, too.

01

Editor-Tested

ChomChom Pet Hair Remover

Amazon

$24.99

A reusable lint roller is a great pet hair remover option that you don’t have to replace too often, and this one has gone viral for a reason. Its larger size is perfect for cleaning couches and upholstered furniture in a cinch. All you have to do is rub the brush back and forth like a regular lint roller—it’ll trap pet hair in the chamber, and you can empty it into the trash with the push of a button. The ChomChom has earned rave reviews for its shocking performance, with one 5-star user writing, “I have a Golden Retriever (if you have one you know). I literally vacuum every day, use a Swiffer on the floor at least 3 times a day. I don’t even know how this dog has hair left! This ChomChom (it should be called MagicMagic) is worth every single nickel…It removes hair off my furniture much more effective and quicker than any high end vacuum cleaner can.”

02

Best Pet Hair Remover Broom

FURemover Original Plus Pet Hair Rubber Broom with Squeegee

Amazon

$16.99

This pet hair remover broom offers a swift way of keeping your floors and carpets clean at a moment’s notice. The electrostatic rubber bristle head is designed to attract and capture dust and hair—and unlike traditional bristle brooms, actually prevents debris from scattering. One happy user writes, “I’ve been using the FURemover Original Pet Hair Rubber Broom for a while, and it has completely changed how I handle pet hair around the house. The rubber bristles do an amazing job of gathering hair from carpets, rugs, and hard floors without scattering it everywhere. It’s much more effective than traditional brooms or vacuums for quick cleanups, and it even works well on furniture and car interiors.”

03

Most Versatile Pet Hair Remover

Uproot Clean Fur-Nado Survival Kit

Amazon

$49.99

If you’ve ever seen a video of the Uproot pet hair remover in action, then you know how satisfying they are to watch! The reusable scrapers seem to get every single bit of dust, hair, and debris out of carpets, couches, rugs—you name it. While you can purchase different sizes separately, this bundle comes with the Mini, Max, and Pro options, all for just $50. Reviewers say it’s easy to use and actually lives up to the hype. One 5-star buyer writes, “Would give this 6 stars if I could. This has made cleaning dog hair off of my rugs so much easier. It is super light weight and collects so much hair. Make it easier to collect hair without it getting stuck in the rollers on my vacuum. 100% worth the money.”

04

Best Reusable Pet Hair Remover for Clothes

OXO Good Grips Furlifter Pet Hair Remover

Amazon

$20.99

What’s more annoying when you’re running late than looking down and seeing a ton of pet hair on your clothes? We’ll wait… Luckily, this OXO device can make quick work of getting you work-ready in the nick of time. Plus, it’s reusable and has a self-cleaning base so you don’t even have to mess with going through several pieces of typical lint roller tape.

05

Best Air Purifier for Pet Hair

Wisesky Pet Air Purifier

Amazon

$199.99

If you’re a cat household and need something a bit more heavy-duty, an air purifier could be for you. This model has a filter that captures pet hair, dust, and dander, plus offers smart air quality monitoring and a quiet mode. The brand designed this pet hair remover with adorable troublemakers in mind, as it features a bite-proof cord and an auto-shutoff feature if it tips over. Reviewers praise it for its minimalist design and low noise level, too.

06

Best Budget Pet Hair Remover for Carpet

ELEMSY Pet Hair Remover Pro

Amazon

$8.97

If there’s carpet in your home—especially medium- or high-pile carpeting—pet hair can become embedded deep within the fibers, making it particularly hard to clean. With this handy gadget, however, you’ll make quick work of removing all of it. Think of it as a miniature rake that goes deep within the layers to pick up whatever is stuck below. The ergonomic handle makes it comfortable to hold; and short, quick strokes in every direction allow it to do its job with relative ease.

07

Best for Quick Cleaning

Bissell Pet Hair Eraser

Amazon

$89.99

If you don’t have a vacuum that’s specifically marketed for pet hair removal, then it’s not going to be 100% effective on it. But if you really like your existing stick or upright vacuum, then a handheld vacuum for car detailing, spot cleaning, and upholstery is a great addition to your cleaning supplies. This one by Bissell comes with a motorized brush head, a crevice tool, and an upholstery attachment for detailed surface cleaning. It runs up to 17 minutes on high before needing a recharge, has a powerful lithium-ion battery, and works on little messes like kibble, too.

Best for Travel

Flint Retractable Lint Roller

Amazon

$19.99

This retractable lint roller is great for travel or to keep in your purse or glove compartment: just twist to open it up and do a spot clean on your clothes, then twist it back in so it won’t get stuck on anything in your bag. It’s also made with 100% recycled paper, and you can buy refills of the rollers, so this an eco-friendly purchase to boot.

09

Best Cordless Vacuum for Pet Hair

Shark Rocket Cordless Vacuum

Amazon

$179.00

If you’re looking to upgrade your existing vacuum, this Shark Rocket Cordless is a great option. It comes with a brush head, a crevice tool, and an attachment made for pet hair, and it turns into a handheld quickly and easily, too. The Shark runs for up to 40 minutes without needing a recharge, and it works on both hard floors and carpets. One of its best features is its LED lights, which allow you to easily spot if you’ve missed messes in corners or other hard-to-see places. At under 7 pounds, it’s also a lighter option than many of its competitors, too.

10

Best Lint Roller for Pet Hair

Scotch Brite Extra-Sticky Pet Roller

Amazon

$5.98

When it comes to removing pet hair on clothing, you can’t go wrong with a basic lint roller—but this one is made better because it’s designed specifically for pet hair, so it’s extra-sticky to grab every last bit of it. It’s also gentle on fabrics and rips cleanly off the roller for easy disposal.

11

Best Upright Vacuum for Pet Hair

Dyson Ball Animal 2 Upright Vacuum

Amazon

$425.48

If your biggest area of concern is the carpets and floors of your house (and you always forget to charge up your vacuum), this corded Dyson Ball Animal 2 has the most powerful suction that will get up every little bit of pet hair. It has self-adjusting suction that allows it to work on vinyl, hard wood, tile, or carpet—and it also has simple one-handed dust removal thanks to its push button. It comes equipped with a tangle-free turbine tool that ensures hair won’t get stuck in the brush head, plus a stair tool and a combination tool.

12

Best Multi-Use Tool for Pet Hair

Analan Mini Pet Hair Remover

Amazon

$15.99

This triangle-shaped pet hair remover has three sides, each with a different set of edges from minimum to maximum. (The maximum edge gets rid of hair from large areas while the minimum is better for detailing and corners.) The comfortable handle and small size make it easy to keep in your car for quick clean-ups: just rake it through the areas you want to clean, and the hair will accumulate in a pile you can just throw out afterwards.

13

Best Pet Brush

If you haven’t heard yet, Jonathan, Zooey, and the kiddos have three new fluffy family members! They brought home Dove, Poppy, and Pickle earlier this year and instantly, the whole family fell in love. They adore their new fur babies! And as every cat owner knows, when you first bring home your new kitties, you might need to make some adjustments so they have everything they need to feel comfortable. This includes cat trees and cat beds, the right slow or automatic cat feeders and water fountains, litter boxes, and of course, plenty of toys.Jonathan and Zooey have made plenty of fun new additions to the house to get the cats acquainted—including a homemade catio.

Jonathan knew that the cats loved watching the birds and wildlife, and getting fresh air, but he wanted to make sure they were safe from danger while they explored outdoors. Being an expert in all things home renovation and building, he knew he wanted to make something special for them. A catio is basically an enclosed outdoor patio made smaller, just for furry friends. It can include things like perches, scratching posts, ramps, cat grass, and more. Jonathan thought of everything: From a cat tunnel to an easy-to-clean drainage plate, plenty of platforms for them to climb, and even some sneaky ways to make the structure blend into their house exterior (more on that below). Keep reading for his best tips!

Tips and Must-Haves for How to Build a Catio

Materials matter: The structure itself is the most important part here, so make sure your materials are not only sound, but installed correctly! Jonathan wanted everything to be safe, secure, and stylish, so he called his friend Alan Breslauer (widely known as @catioguy) to help customize and build the perfect catio for Poppy, Dove, and Pickle. “It’s built well, it’s built to last, and the cats absolutely love it,” Jonathan says.

Make sure it’s accessible: For the cats, of course, but also for the humans! You want to be able to get in there and clean easily. They added a human-sized door to the exterior so it’s easy to pop in and wipe things down as needed. Jonathan also included a metal pan underneath the structure for easy draining when they hose down the catio.

Consider a cat tunnel: Jonathan and Zooey wanted to be sure the cats had a way out onto the catio directly from Zooey’s office, since they love hanging out by her during the day. So, they decided to build a cat tunnel! From Zooey’s office, through Jonathan’s, and out onto the catio, the three kitties have an easy, fun way onto their enclosure. The tunnel doors even have actual functioning doorknobs so Jonathan and Zooey can control when the cats can go in and out.

Bonus: Painting the mesh wire black will make it almost vanish visually, which will help the structure blend in nicely with the rest of the house!

For all the fun details, watch the video above and subscribe to our Drew & Jonathan YouTube channel for more peeks inside Drew and Jonathan’s homes, historic house tours, and more.

If you’re suddenly into the idea of homesteading this summer, you’re not alone. More and more, people are waking up to the possibilities that lie in their own backyard, whether the translates to an overflowing vegetable garden, a bed full of blooms, or the best chicken coops full of clucking, happy hens.

Just like with more traditional gardening hobbies, the popularity of chicken coops is on the rise as more homeowners look for ways to get back to nature, spend time outdoors, and even cut back on their ever-growing grocery bill. But in order to do so, you need to provide them with a safe, secure environment where they can feed, rest, and lay eggs. A simple shed or split-rail fence won’t do; your feathered friends deserve more, and luckily, there are plenty of pre-made chicken coops out there to help you give it to them.

The best chicken coops have several different features, including a complete enclosure with a latch to protect the flock from predators like foxes and bobcats, as well as plenty of space for the hens to run around and have ample room for nesting and roosting (a good rule of thumb is to allow 8 to 10 inches of roosting space per bird). Below, we’re rounding up the best chicken coops on the market, plus answering several of the need-to-know questions you may have before graduating to full-fledged chicken parenthood.

01

Cedar Chicken Coop & Run with Planter

Williams Sonoma

$2,799.95

Made from high-quality cedar that’s weather-resistant and durable, this charming chicken coop has everything your flock needs to rest and play comfortably. The base of the structure houses a 25-square-foot “run,” where hens can stretch their legs and mingle, with thick mesh siding that will keep them safe. On the second floor, you’ll find an enclosed coop with a galvanized metal roof that boasts enough room for four hens to live comfortably. Our favorite part? The planter that’s integrated to the side, so you can grow herbs or leafy greens that your chickens will love.

02

Tucker Murphy Pet Cicely Chicken Coop with Chicken Run

Wayfair

$219.99

If you’ve always dreamed of life on a farm, now’s your chance to bring the vibe home. The iconic red barn design of this chicken coop is as charming as can be, with plenty of functional features that will keep your flock (up to three hens) comfortable. A mesh-enclosed run sits at the base of the structure, while the interior boasts spots for relaxing as well as roomy nesting boxes where chickens can lay their eggs. The top of the roof is even hinged for easy egg retrieval with minimal disruption.

03

Omitree Deluxe Large Wood Chicken Coop

Amazon

$425.95

Homesteaders with a larger flock of chickens will appreciate this roomy coop from Omitree, which can house between four and eight chickens, depending on their size. Constructed from solid fir wood and treated to be waterproof, it offers two access doors and a ventilation window to ensure you can always reach your chickens when necessary. Even better, there are three nesting boxes to accommodate a larger brood, with a hinged lid for easy egg collection. While this piece doesn’t include a built-in run, you can always encircle it with a mesh metal fence to grant your flock a bit of yard time.

04

Tucker Murphy Pet Mobile All-Steel Frame Chicken Coop

Wayfair

$376.00

This expansive option from Tucker Murphy Pet is a great choice for homeowners who will be raising their flock in a moderate climate where they won’t need much shelter from the elements. A durable powder-coated steel frame and fence offers plenty of room for yard time, with an integrated ramp that will allow your hens to easily move between the coop and the run. The coop fits up to 10 hens and has a whopping six access doors, each of which is equipped with a predator-proof latch to keep your hens safe all night long. Best of all, the back of the coop is equipped with two durable wheels, making it easy to relocate whenever necessary.

05

Sol 72 Outdoor Ruislip Wooden Chicken Coop with Run and Nesting Boxes

Wayfair

$330.00

Got the space? Then snag your hens the mansion of chicken coops with this design from Sol 72 Outdoor. Designed to house up to six hens in two opposing coops, this double-decker model is secure and spacious, with a trio of access points and predator-proof locks that keep your babies safe. At the base of each coop and in between the pair, you’ll find a roomy run that’s enclosed with durable mesh and boasts two ramps, granting your flock access to grass and fresh air any time they want. Each side features a large nesting box with a hinged lid and removable divider that allows you to increase or decrease the size.

06

PawGiant Portable Metal Chicken Coop

Amazon

$99.99

While not designed to act as a traditional coop, this oversized run and enclosed pen will still come in handy for chicken owners of all types. Made from durable powder-coated stainless steel, it touts 20 6-inch-long anchors to secure it safely to the ground, where it’ll remain even in the face of wind, rain, or other conditions. There’s a waterproof extension cover that boasts a UV protective coating, giving your flock a place to rest out of the elements, be it rain or the sun’s hot rays. Use this coop as a spot to safely give your flock yard time, or as a means of transitioning new chicks from the brooder to a more formal coop.

07

CoopAndGardenFarms DIY Chicken Coop Guide

Etsy

$18.00

You know what they say—nothing shows love and care like building something with your own two hands. If you’re looking to embrace the “back to basics” appeal of owning chickens, perhaps you want to try your hand at building a coop from scratch? These easy-to-follow directions (Really! Over 612 glowing reviews say so!) will help you craft a board-and-batten-inspired coop fit for up to 12 chickens. Before you think this coop is just a pretty face, know this: It boasts an impressive 32.5 square feet of space for your chickens, with a functional layout that promotes natural air ventilation and adapts to hens’ instinct to nest in seclusion. The best part? You’ll have the freedom to decorate the hen house however you see fit, whether that means a crisp country white or bold fuchsia pink.

How big should a chicken coop be?

The size of your chicken coop should be in direct relation to the number of hens you intend to have. In general, you’ll want around 4 square feet of space per bird, in addition to an outdoor area where they can run free safely. You’ll also want to consider other factors when determining the proper size of your chicken coop, including how big of a roosting bar it offers, and how many chickens can fit in the nesting box(es) at once (you’ll typically want one box for every three hens).

No matter how out-of-reach you keep your plants, or how well-trained your pets are, inevitably, your four-legged friends may get curious and take a bite. While most plants that are considered unsafe for pets will at most cause some temporary discomfort like vomiting, some can cause serious damage, such as organ failure, seizures, or even worse. So it’s absolutely best to err on the side of caution and only keep the best pet-friendly plants around that won’t cause harm if ingested.

Fortunately, there are plenty of pet-safe houseplants that will keep your space looking fresh and vibrant—without posing a threat to your furry family members. We’ve done the research for you and found options that will give you total peace of mind bringing home. And even if you don’t exactly consider yourself to be much of a green thumb, not to worry—most of these are easy indoor plants to maintain, too. Though if you’re looking to up your game, you can also snag some gardening tips from Drew.

(Some common houseplants, such as pothos, jade, fiddle leaf figs, and dieffenbachia, are unfortunately toxic to dogs and cats. If you’re unsure if any plants you currently own or would like to purchase are dangerous for your pets, the ASPCA has an extensive list of plants that you can check.)

01

Baby Rubber Plant

Not to be confused with the rubber tree (which is not pet-safe), this charming mini version features glossy, succulent-like leaves and a bushy shape that looks great on desks or shelves. It’s a low-maintenance option for busy pet (and plant!) parents, and its tolerance for low light makes it super adaptable and easy to care for.

02

Amazon

$19.99

Want to add instant vacation vibes? The Areca Palm has big, breezy fronds that’ll make any entryway or empty corner feel a little brighter and more tropical. It loves a sunny spot and regular watering, but doesn’t need much else to thrive.

03

Ponytail Palm Bonsai

Amazon

$38.99

Despite its name, the Ponytail Palm is technically a succulent, and its cute and quirky look makes it a fun conversation starter. It’s safe for pets and basically thrives on neglect. Just put it in a sunny spot and enjoy the playful vibe—no green thumb required.

04

Calathea Concinna “Freddy”

$0.00

The striped wavy leaves of the Calathea “Freddy” (sometimes called a zebra plant because of its stripes) add a lively accent to any room. In fact, these do well in low light and thrive in humidity, so they’re great for adding some greenery to a bathroom where it will enjoy the steam from the shower.

05

Watermelon Peperomia Plant

Amazon

$0.00

The Peperomia family includes over 1,000 known species of plants with a wide array of textures, shapes, and colors that are all considered safe for pets. We’re partial to the argyreia variety, whose hardy leaves look just like the outside of a watermelon. They adapt well as houseplants, and just need regular watering to be happy.

06

Chinese Money Plant, Set of 2

Amazon

$19.99

The Chinese Money Plant’s distinctive disc-shaped leaves make it a very photogenic addition to a mantel, windowsill, or bookshelf (they’re a favorite among modern design enthusiasts). Sometimes called friendship plants, they grow offshoots that you can easily propagate and gift to other pet-parent friends.

07

Spider Plant, 3-Pack

Amazon

$37.99

Spider plants are one of the most popular houseplants because of their adaptability. They’re a particular favorite for beginners, as they require little maintenance. This non-toxic plant will look great in a hanging planter, which can help keep its wispy foliage out of reach for overly curious pets. They’ll also eventually sprout little spider plant babies that can be propagated into new plants.

08

Dwarf Banana Tree

$0.00

Few houseplants make quite as big a statement as the banana tree, with its broad paddle-shaped leaves that bring lush tropical vibes to your space. It thrives in bright light and humidity so place it by a big south-facing window so it can really soak up the sun.

09

Donkey’s Tail

Amazon

$0.00

If you’re a fan of succulents, you’re in luck. A lot of succulents are unfortunately not safe for pets, but the Donkey’s Tail, with its chubby, nubby stalks, is nontoxic for both pets and humans. The trailing stems can grow to be more than two feet long, so this is another plant that works great in a hanging planter or on a mantel where the stems can drape.

10

Bromeliad Plant

Amazon

$0.00

Bromeliads are super easy to care for and are all non-toxic to dogs, cats, and other common pets. Plus, they can be grown using soil-free methods (attached to rocks or in the air). So if you have pets that like to play in dirt, these are a great option for bringing bright, long-lasting flowers (they can last for up to six months!) in your home without the need for potting in soil.

11

Red Prayer Plant

$0.00

The prayer plant has a curious habit of curling its leaves inward at night, as if folding its hands in prayer. And its brightly patterned pink, yellow, and green leaves will add a nice pop of color to your home. While it adapts well to various light conditions, bright indirect sunlight is best.

12

African Violets, 3-Pack

Amazon

$44.99

Another flowering plant, the African Violet is perfect for adding a touch of warmth and color to a kitchen windowsill, shelf, or other small area, as they only grow to be about six inches tall. The fuzzy, green-leafed plant blooms several times a year, and with proper care you can even enjoy the pretty blossoms year-round.

13

Parlor Palm

Amazon

$16.99

Bring the tropics home with a leafy, low-maintenance parlor palm. Its feathery fronds can grow up to 4-feet tall, making it an excellent accent for an interior corner of a living room or hallway, especially as it can tolerate low light. The parlor palm also has the added benefit of being an air-purifying plant that cleans the surrounding air of toxins.

What plants should I avoid with cats and dogs?

Some popular houseplants can be surprisingly dangerous for pets. Common ones to steer clear of include pothos, peace lilies, snake plants, philodendrons, and sago palms. They might look pretty, but even a little nibble can cause anything from stomach upset to more serious issues, so it’s best to play it safe and stick to non-toxic options.

In case you missed it, Jonathan and Zooey expanded their family last year! They welcomed three adorable kittens to their home, The Park House: Poppy, Pickle, and Dove. Since then, they’ve been getting to know their new furry friends, and each has a different personality. Poppy is precocious, while Pickle is cute and cautious. And then there’s Dove, who runs the whole show. But getting a pet (much less three!) requires planning to ensure you have everything they need to play, eat, and grow comfortably. Jonathan’s loving spending time with the cats, and has helped put together a new kitten checklist so that anyone who’s just gotten a cuddly pal (or is thinking about it) can enter into their cat era with confidence.

Keep reading for some must-have essentials and tips to making the transition seamless. Then, you can focus on what matters—snuggling up with your cat!

1. Scratching Posts and Cat Trees

A cat’s gotta scratch! But don’t worry, there are a lot of cat trees and posts that are actually pretty stylish. We have this one that’s made with real branches that are covered with sisal for them to paw away at. It also has pom pom toys and cozy white finishes for the kitties to relax on. Dove is the queen of our house and she loves ruling from the top perch.

2. Litter Box

We love our Litter Robot. The cats like them as well, and they make cleanup way easier. Instead of having to scoop all the time, it automatically separates your cat’s unmentionables from the clean litter. All you have to do is empty the waste drawer when it’s full—and there’s even an app that will let you know when to do it.

3. Food and Water Bowls

These are obviously essential, but the fun part is picking them out! You can go all-in on the design aspect with something personalized or colorful, or focus more on the function and choose a simple, minimalist look. I’d highly recommend grabbing a washable mat to put underneath your bowls to protect your floors from water or food spills, too.

4. Toys

Cats are famous for loving their toys one day, and the next, acting like you’re a fool for even thinking they’d want to play with that fake mouse. We keep a bunch on-hand so we’re ready for any mood. We have all the classics like the plushes and wands, plus a few interactive options. If you really want a show, get them a few catnip toys, too. Oh, and a pro tip? Make sure you have a basket in your living room to stash these in when guests come over so the place doesn’t look cluttered.

5. Cat Carriers

Unlike most dogs, cats need their own special place when you take them to the vet or on an adventure. You can go as stylish or functional as you want, but I like an option with mesh sides that lets you see your little pal. That way you can comfort them if they get nervous on the road.

6. Cat Hair Removers

Buckle up, because I have a hard truth to share: Cat hair will be everywhere. But it’s worth it to cuddle up with those adorable faces. (Most of the time.) There are some pretty cool tools out there now, but ultimately a vacuum, a hand vacuum, and even a reusable lint roller tool like this are going to be your best friends. I also like to use a dry mop on the floors in between vacuums.

7. Beds

Last but not least—you gotta get a comfy bed for them. They deserve to be pampered, after all.

And here are a few more tips to keep in mind:

Find your vet right away: It’s important to make it to all your vet appointments so you can get the right vaccines and checkups they need to start off right. Also, have a number for a 24-hour animal hospital handy. Trust me—you don’t want to be scrambling on Google when an emergency comes up.

Get rid of any toxic plants: Cats are famously curious and sometimes like to nibble on plants. Move any toxic plants to another spot they can’t reach or replace them with pet-friendly options. (We have a whole list of them here.)

Pick up any cords: Cords look suspiciously like some of their favorite cat toys, so it’s easy to see why they’d want to swipe and chew on them. Make sure you have any loose cords controlled or consider covering them with protectors.

Food and treats: They’re growing kittens! I like to spoil them with these treats, but check with your vet to get the best list of snacks for your cat.

When summer starts and the heat sets in, it’s easy to forget just how tough it can be on our pups. With their furry coats and no way to sweat, dogs feel the heat just like we do—but they need a little extra help to stay comfortable. Whether you just got a new puppy or you just want to make sure you’re well-prepared for the summer sun, we’re laying out the best ways to keep your dogs cool and comfortable. The good news is it doesn’t require a fancy setup or high-tech gear (though a paddling pool never hurts!).

With a few smart tweaks to your routine—like knowing when to walk them, the best ways to cool dogs down, and how to spot heat stroke in pups—you can help your furry friend cruise through summer without breaking a pant. Plus, we’ve rounded up some heat-busting gear that’s actually worth wagging about, too. From cooling apparel to frozen puppy treats, these are our best smart, simple tips to help your dog stay cool, happy, and healthy throughout all of your summer activities!

1. Make Frozen Treats for Your Pup

DIY frozen dog treats are an easy and fun way to help your dog beat the heat. Try freezing low-sodium chicken broth, plain yogurt, or mashed bananas in an ice cube tray for a cool snack. You can even find silicone molds in fun shapes to make treat time even more enjoyable. (We included a cute one at the bottom of our list!)

2. Use a Cooling Vest

Cooling vests are a game-changer for dogs who need to stay active in hot weather. These vests use evaporation or cooling gel technology to draw heat away from your dog’s body. Just soak it in cool water, wring it out, and strap it on before heading outdoors.

3. Set Up a Doggie Cooling Station

Create a shaded chill zone in your backyard with a raised dog bed, cooling mat, and a large bowl of fresh water. Add a misting fan or sprinkler nearby for extra relief. This setup gives your pup a dedicated space to relax and recharge on sweltering afternoons.

4. Never Leave Dogs In Cars

Leaving your dog in a parked car, even briefly with the air conditioner on, can be deadly. This is because, according to The Humane Society, temperatures inside a car can soar rapidly in just a matter of minutes. The extreme heat can lead to severe consequences for your pup, like organ damage, brain failure, and even death. These rules don’t just apply to your pet: If you see a dog left in a hot car, The Humane Society recommends taking immediate action or contacting the local authorities.

5. Keep Your Dog Hydrated

Keeping dogs hydrated on hot days is crucial to preventing dehydration and heatstroke, which can be life-threatening for them. Regular access to fresh, cool water helps dogs stay hydrated and maintain their overall health during hot weather. So even if you’re just going out for a short walk, always bring a portable dog water bottle or bowl. You can also add ice to your dog’s water to help regulate their body temperature more effectively, especially during heat waves.

6. Provide Shade Outside

Providing shade for your dog outdoors is essential to protecting them from overheating and sunburn. Options like trees, umbrellas, tarps, or shade sails offer excellent protection for shielding your dog from direct sunlight. These options also allow for better air circulation, creating a cooler and more comfortable environment for your furry friend.

7. Know How to Spot Heatstroke

Extreme temperatures can trigger heatstroke, so be sure to watch out for symptoms like heavy panting, glazed eyes, and rapid heartbeat. Certain pups, especially those that are very old, young, overweight, or have health conditions, are particularly vulnerable. To treat heatstroke, move your pet to shade, apply cold packs, offer small amounts of cool water, and seek veterinary help promptly.

8. Keep Your Dog Indoors During Peak Heat Hours

Keeping your dog indoors during peak heat hours (typically in the mid-afternoon) protects them from the most intense sunlight and heat, and reduces the risk of heatstroke and discomfort. During the hottest part of the day, it’s best to stick to indoor environments that offer controlled temperatures. This practice also helps prevent paw burns on hot surfaces like asphalt, and minimizes the risk of dehydration and exhaustion from prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

9. Limit Exercise On Hot Days

Chewy notes that it’s best to take your dog on short, early morning or evening walks on hot days to prevent heat-related issues. This advice is particularly important for pets with white ears, who are more susceptible to skin cancer, and pets with short noses, who may have breathing difficulties. Protect your pet’s paws from hot asphalt by walking on grass and ensure they stay hydrated by always carrying water during outings.

10. Cool Down Your Dog With Damp Towels

Cooling your dog down with damp towels on hot days will help regulate their body temperature and prevent overheating or heatstroke. Leave the towel on for short periods of time, allowing the moisture to evaporate and provide a cooling effect on your dog’s skin. Be sure to remove the towel once it has dried.

11. Buy a Doggie Paddling Pool

Does your furry friend love the water? If so, consider investing in a paddling pool for a safe and fun way for your dog to cool down on hot days. There are even some pools designed with pups in mind! Just be sure to avoid using icy or freezing water as drastic temperature changes can cause dogs to go into shock.

12. Don’t Rely On a Fan

Using a fan to cool down dogs is not recommended because unlike humans, dogs primarily regulate their body temperature through panting and releasing heat through their paw pads and nose. While a fan may provide some relief, it’s not as effective for dogs and may even cause discomfort due to the noise and blowing air. To keep your dog cool and conserve energy, switch off fans, lights, and electronics when not needed.

13. Try a Dog Cooling Mat

Keep your dog comfortable in hot weather by providing dog cooling mats that use water to cool without electricity. This will help prevent burns from hot surfaces and offer your pup a comfortable retreat from the sun’s heat.

How can I tell if my dog is too hot?

Dogs can’t sweat like we do, so they rely on panting to cool down. If your dog is panting heavily; drooling more than usual; seems lethargic; has red or glazed eyes; or is unsteady on their feet, they might be overheating. More serious signs of heat exhaustion include vomiting, diarrhea, and collapse. If you notice any of these, it’s time to act fast—move them to a cool spot, offer water, and call your vet or emergency clinic.

The papers are signed, your heart is full, and your pup is almost home… Now, it’s time to get ready. Bringing home a new puppy is equal parts exciting and stressful—this is a new chapter for both you and your furry friend, and you want to make sure you’re both set up for success! Being well-prepared for their homecoming makes all the difference. That’s where our new puppy checklist comes in. We’ve thought of everything you could possibly need or want to make sure Fido feels right at home when he walks in.

Before those tiny paws hit your floors, you’ll want to stock up on everything your new best friend needs to feel safe, comfy, and cared for. That means more than just the cute stuff—you’ll also need practical, everyday essentials like dog collars, bowls and feeders, grooming tools, cozy dog beds, and healthy dog treats. We even cover what to bring to your pup’s first vet visit, so you’ll feel completely prepared from day one. Whether you’re adopting from a local shelter or bringing home a rescue pup, this guide will help everyone settle in more smoothly. Trust us: You’ll be glad you checked every box when the zoomies strike or nature calls at 2:00 AM!

The Ultimate New Puppy Checklist

You can save this graphic on Instagram for easy reference, too!

Food and Treats

First things first: Check with the adoption center or foster home to see what your puppy’s currently eating. Switching foods too fast can upset their little stomachs, so it’s best to stick with the same kibble at first and gradually transition if needed. Pick up a slow feeder bowl, especially for fast eaters—it helps prevent bloating and teaches them to pace themselves. Don’t forget training treats, too! Opt for small, soft ones that won’t fill them up too fast while you’re teaching those all-important commands like “sit” and “stay.”

Bathroom Essentials

House training is a process, so stock up on supplies that’ll help you stay prepared. You’ll need plenty of waste bags with a clip-on dispenser for walks, and puppy pee pads for indoor training. Place pads near the door and keep them consistent—it’ll help your pup associate the area with potty breaks. Accidents are guaranteed, so keep an enzyme-based cleaner on hand to break down odors (puppies have good noses and will return to the scene of the crime if it still smells like urine!) Pro tips: Take your pup out every hour during the first few days and after every nap or meal. Consistency is everything. And even if you have a fenced yard, try keeping your puppy on a leash during potty breaks to help them stay focused on the task and reinforce the purpose of the outing.

Toys and Beds

Get a mix of chew toys, puzzle toys, and soft plush toys to keep your pup mentally and physically engaged. Make sure they’re size-appropriate (nothing too small that could become a choking hazard) and skip toys with small plastic eyes or pieces that could easily pop off. For beds, pick something machine-washable and cozy (and know that it might get chewed up if Fido hasn’t started teething yet.) You might also want to invest in a crate or puppy pen to give them a safe space to nap and wind down.

Grooming

Even if your pup’s not ready for a full spa day just yet, some basic grooming tools are a must. Keep a gentle brush or grooming mitt on hand, especially for breeds that shed, and dog-safe shampoo for the inevitable mud puddles and mystery messes. You’ll also need nail clippers or a grinder, and don’t forget to wipe down paws after walks. Puppy paws are delicate, and keeping them clean helps avoid irritation or infections. A toothbrush and dog-safe toothpaste will also help you build good dental habits early on.

Vet and Paperwork

Before you bring your puppy home, line up a vet you trust—preferably one who offers 24-hour emergency services or can recommend a nearby clinic that does. Go ahead and schedule your pup’s first wellness checkup before you bring them home so you’re not scrambling later on. You’ll also want to have a sturdy pet carrier or travel crate ready for that first visit, along with a leash, collar, and ID tag in case of any unexpected detours. At pickup, make sure to get all the adoption paperwork, including vaccine records, microchip details, and any notes from the foster or shelter. Keeping these organized in a pet folder or digital file will help your vet get the full picture and make future visits smoother.

With these essentials, you’re all set to welcome your new four-legged friend home. Just remember: Patience, treats, and belly rubs go a long way!

You asked, Drew and Jonathan answered! We recently polled out @DrewandJonathan followers to see what your biggest cleaning paint points are. Now, the Bros are exclusively sharing their answers to your most frequently asked questions, offering the best cleaning hacks and advice to make it all less of a chore.

Whether it’s protecting your flooring, getting the house to smell fresh, or handling the constant shedding from your pets, Drew and Jonathan know how to clean up a mess.  Plus, they give you a few pro parenting tips and product recommendations along the way. So keep reading to find out how they handle your headaches so you can spend less time scrubbing and more time doing things you love. (Like catching up on our shows!)

What’s the best way to clean grout?

JONATHAN: Grout can get gross fast. My first suggestion is regular maintenance—once a year isn’t enough. Otherwise the buildup will be that much worse and take you that much longer. Overall, though, the answer is tried-and-true: A good grout cleaner (we have a whole list here), some elbow grease, and a little time should get your bathroom sparkling again. Make sure to let the solution sit for 5-10 minutes before you go in to scrub, and I like to use a Magic Eraser or a specific grout scrub tool. That’s really what works best.

What’s the best way to clean windows with no streaks?

DREW: Here’s my pro tip: Clean your windows on a cloudy day. If it’s hot or sunny out, it may dry your cleaning solution faster than you wanted, leaving you with those annoying streaks. Also, dust the window with a microfiber cloth before you spray. Then, go in with your preferred window cleaner and cloth and restore your windows to their former glory!

How do I keep pet hair from taking over?

JONATHAN: As a new owner of three cats, I’m still figuring this out. Unfortunately, I don’t think there’s a magical solution, but here are a few basic rules: I try to vacuum or use a pet hair remover on our couches and chairs every other day. If I wait too long, it takes fur-ever (see what I did there?) to get them back to normal. I go over my floors with a dry mop like a Swiffer every 1-2 days, and vacuum the whole place twice a week. Is it a lot of work? Yes. But their cute faces make it worth it. Oh, and don’t forget to toss a travel-sized lint roller in your bag or car…trust me on that one.

There are also a few cool products out there to consider trying:

  • Sofa covers are famously unattractive, but there are newer options out there now. This one almost looks like a throw blanket, and it’s machine washable so you can just toss it in once a week instead of vacuuming your couch every day.
  • Wool dryer balls are great for a lot of reasons, but one you might not have realized is that they can trap pet hair from clothes.
  • Robot vacuums might be your pets’ worst enemy, but they’ll be your best friend. They’re perfect for everyday maintenance, especially since you don’t have to do the legwork. Just make sure they don’t suck up the cat!
  • Check out this clever self-grooming tool. You can attach it to a corner, table leg, or anywhere your cat likes to rub up against and it’ll capture their hair. There’s also this cat play mat that has a similar built-in brush.
  • An air purifier that’s made specifically for households with pets? I’m sold. It can help with odors, plus capture pet hair, dust, lint, dander, and other unmentionables.

How do I keep carpeted stairs clean? I hate them!

DREW: The first thing is to invest in high-quality, stain-resistant carpeting. That’s going to save you a lot of headaches overall. But when it comes to keeping them clean from everyday issues like shoe stains, a handheld carpet cleaner is going to be your secret weapon. A cordless, lightweight option will lift dirt and tough spots easily, plus it won’t hurt your back lugging it around. And don’t forget to treat stains right away! The longer you wait, the tougher the battle will be.

What’s the best way to clean hardwood floors without damaging them?

JONATHAN: Hardwood floors are beautiful, but they’ll only stay that way if you treat them right. Here are a few tips: Run a dry mop over them as many days as possible to prevent buildup and make it easier to vacuum. Then, make sure your vacuum has a feature for hardwood floors to prevent scratches and scuffs. Lastly, if you’re mopping your floors, make sure the mop is damp, not wet. Too much water and wood are not a good combo.

And some pro advice for scratches and dents: If you have a dent in your wood floors, you can wet it slightly; cover it with a damp towel; and run an iron set to the steam function or a steamer over it. The wood will oftentimes rise back to its original level. But a quick note that many wood floors have finishes on them, so always test in a hidden area first to ensure it doesn’t stain or warp the floor. You can also fill in a lot of scratches with a restoring product, which you can easily apply with a mop. And again, make sure to try it on an inconspicuous spot first.

How can I make my house smell fresh?

DREW: No one likes a musty house! To truly get your spaces smelling fresh, don’t just cover things up—eliminate odors at the source. Bad smells can really cling to soft surfaces, so attack stains right away and regularly clean your fabric-based items, like curtains, couches, bedding, pet beds, and throw pillow covers. Change your HVAC filters to improve air quality, which will prevent your home from smelling stale. And then it’s the little stuff, like replacing your sponges regularly, taking out the trash, and cleaning out the fridge. You’d be surprised how quickly that contributes to “what is that smell?” moments. Oh, and open the windows! A little fresh air goes a long way.

If you like to like to layer in extra scents, it’s easy to opt for a candle. But that’s not always the safest if you have little kids running around. I’m obviously a big fan of smart home products, and now they even make smart diffusers. Some let you set timers and routines, so you don’t even having to think about it. You can also refresh fabrics in-between cleans with a product like Febreze.

You are both parents of young kids—how do you avoid getting stains on everything?

JONATHAN: Kids need to be kids, so spills will happen. But there are a few things you can do to protect your decor (and your sanity). Choose upholstery fabrics and rugs that are stain-resistant and can be washed, like this rug from our collection. You can also cover your rooms with paint or wallpaper that wipes clean, though you’ll want to make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. And avoid keeping any permanent paints or markers around—everything should be washable. When all else fails, have the right products handy for immediate damage control. Here are a few of my go-tos:

So, how do I do less of it?

DREW: When you find out, let us know!
